20.01.2022 Dhyana while practising asanas and pranayama tatra pratyaya-ikatanata dhyanam ||2|| ... A steady, continuous flow of attention directed towards the same point or region is meditation (dhyana). Ekatanata implies an unbroken flow of contact between the sadhaka s consciousness and his Sadhana. We can see, therefore, that dhyana May be achieved in both asana and pranayama. In Asana , there is a centrifugal movement of consciousness to the frontiers of the body, whether extended vertically, horizontally or circumferentially , and a centripetal movement as the whole body is brought into single focus. If the attention is steadily maintained in this manner, meditation takes place. Similarly in pranayama, the flow of in or out breath is sensitively measured and sustained, resulting in total involvement with the self . During retention , when the breath, cells of the torso, consciousness and soul are brought into unison, meditation occurs. #iyengaryoga #bksiyengar #yoganusasanam #yogalife #yogakarona #dhyana #asana #pranayama

18.01.2022 UTTANASANA TUNING THE STRINGS OF THE CELESTIAL VEENA We guage the suppleness of the body by the mobility of the spine. The condition of the spine however, det...ermines not only physical well being, but also our life force and spiritual strength. In yogic literature, the spine is often refered to as the Merudanda- a term which collectively includes the vertebral column, the spinal cord and the sensory and motor nerves emanating from it. Darsana upanishad has bestowed the Merudanda with another beautiful name -the Veena danda or the stem of the celestial Veena. It is comprised of two round gourds connected on the ends of a long hollow cylinder. These strings can be tightened or adjusted by means of pegs. The strings run over small wooden frets. The Veena is the instrument of Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge. The name Veena danda is the most fitting metaphor for the spinal column, which is the source of all human attributes like wisdom, intellect, sensation, emotions, imagination, memory, creativity, ego and morality. The brain is the gourd at the upper end and the spinal column, the hollow stem of the instrument. The nerve fibre emanating from the brain are the strings, and the spinal vertebrae are the frets. The strumming of these strings is accomplished by breathing. Our physical Veena needs to be maintained just like the musical one. The nerve strings must be lovingly nurtured and firmly stretched at all times so that they resonate at every level: physical, mental, moral, intellectual and spiritual . If a portion of the Veena strings is excessively stretched in the wrong direction, the strings will snap. Similarly, if the lower spine holds back and the upper portion extends forward, there is a risk of injury. The stiffened muscles of the back must be softened and spread thinly and smoothly over the bones like butter on a slice of bread. Uttanasana is the surrender of ones soul to the divine spirit. Mindful practice of uttanasana , with focus on the breath, becomes an act of rhythmic, effortless submission to ones higher self or Inner being. #uttanasana #yoganusasanam #iyengaryoga #bksiyengar #yogakarona #arogyayoga

18.01.2022 Namastè represents the belief that there is a Divine spark within each of us that is located in the heart chakra. The gesture is an acknowledgment of the soul i...n one by the soul in another. "Nama" means bow, "as" means I, and "te" means you. Therefore, Namaste literally means "bow me you" or "I bow to you." To perform Namaste, we place the hands together at the heart charka, close the eyes, and bow the head. It can also be done by placing the hands together in front of the third eye, bowing the head, and then bringing the hands down to the heart. This is an especially deep form of respect. Although in the West the word "Namaste" is usually spoken in conjunction with the gesture, in India, it is understood that the gesture itself signifies Namaste, and therefore, it is unnecessary to say the word while bowing. We bring the hands together at the heart chakra to increase the flow of Divine love. Bowing the head and closing the eyes helps the mind surrender to the Divine in the heart. One can do Namaste to oneself as a meditation technique to go deeper inside the heart chakra; when done with someone else, it is also a beautiful, albeit quick, meditation. For a teacher and student, Namaste allows two individuals to come together energetically to a place of connection and timelessness, free from the bonds of ego-connection. If it is done with deep feeling in the heart and with the mind surrendered, a deep union of spirits can blossom. Ideally, Namaste should be done both at the beginning and at the end of class. Usually, it is done at the end of class because the mind is less active and the energy in the room is more peaceful. The teacher initiates Namaste as a symbol of gratitude and respect toward her students and her own teachers and in return invites the students to connect with their lineage, thereby allowing the truth to flowthe truth that we are all one when we live from the heart. (Aadil Palkhivala)

17.01.2022 When patanjali speaks of the effect of the asana-s he says , tatah dvandvah anabhigatah. He says that the asana-s help in the cessation of the dual mind and... help the mind to transform into a single mind. The perfect sadhana of asana-s still the mind from its dual functioning. This sutra also conveys how the asana-s play the connecting role in bringing the object - the seen , and the subject - the seer together . Asana-s help in integrating the body , the organs of action, senses of perception, mind , intelligence and consciousness along with drastr-drsya as a single unit leading the sadhaka from the expansion of the consciousness ( citta prasadanam) to the expansion of the soul (atma - prasadanam), kindling the true light of the Self. The sutra expresses this truth in the following words: prayatna saithilya ananta samapattibhyam Treating the body as an object is effort. If the same body is changed as the subject, the self unites with the body and the sense of effort disappears on its own and self shines in the asana-s. This is the truth and real expansion of the self. In this state one experiences peace in the body, poise in the mind and the benevolence in the self. This is the mastery of asana-s. Sthira sukham asanam While one is performing the asana-s like Sirsasana, Sarvangasana, Halasana, Paschimottanasana, Urdhva Dhanurasana, Kapotasana, or vrscikasana, the organs and senses take a reverse turn and peep to look within the body. In all these asanas the organs and senses look within. #yoganusasanam #yaugikamanas #bksiyengar #prashantiyengar #iyengaryoga

17.01.2022 "Patanjali sums up the effects of yoga in this one sutra...Yoga can cure or lessen our physical, mental, moral and spiritual sufferings. Perfection and success are certain only if one practises with love and whole-hearted dedication" B.K.S. Iyengar, Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

09.01.2022 PARSVOTTANASANA For the equilibrium of the mind Parsvottanasana is extremely useful in expelling the tamoguna from the body, reducing the pulsation of the brai...n and pacifying the mind, which is perpetually caught in the net of confusion and turmoil . While it appears that parsvottanasana is one of the easier asanas, the final asana is a culmination of the varied movements of stretching, twisting, contracting and expanding, as well as the convex and concave action of the spine. One has to learn to coordinate these opposing movements and to establish a dialogue between the body, mind, senses and intellect for a unified and harmonious experience. Through the study of asana we develop the twin tools of sensitivity and understanding. We use them as spade and shovel to plough the soil of the elemental body from the outermost physical level to the subtlest reaches of the consciousness. In the Bhagwad Gita Lord Krishna says: Be immersed in yoga and work without desiring the fruits of your labour; act with equanimity in the face of success and failure; for this inner poise, or the state of equilibrium, is yoga. The practice of this simple yet profound asana paves the way for equilibrium of the body, mind and intellect. #parsvottanasana #yoganusasanam #iyengaryoga #yogalife #yogakarona #bksiyengar

02.01.2022 YOGA THE MOTHER OF ALL ARTS Ancient Indian texts describe six art forms for enriching human life: Yogika, Mallika, Natya, Sangitika, Vyavaharik and Dhanushya. ...The eight limbed yaugika that uplifts every aspect of human existence- moral, physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual- is undoubtedly, the mother of all arts. The influence of yoga is visible in the case of dance. Some of the postures in classical dance bear a striking resemblance to asanas in yoga. The three virbhadrasana-s, for instance, evoke the vigorous tandava dance. An interesting story of Virbhadra, the warrior bearing a bow and arrow, an axe and a three pointed spear, is narrated by kalidasa in the epic poem, Kumarsambhava. In the tale, king Daksha, the father in law of Siva, was unhappy that his daughter, a princess had married a hermit. The king performed a sacrifice without inviting his own daughter Sati and his illustrious son in law. Despite the rebuff, Sati attended the yajna, where deeply offended by the insult of being ignored by her own parents, she immolated herself in the sacrificial fire. Lord Siva ,overcome with fury, pulled a strand of hair from his tangled locks and struck it forcefully against the ground, from which the mighty warrior, Virbhadra was born. Virbhadra, leading Sivas army, stormed into Dakshas kingdom and destroyed the Yajna, forced the devas and rishis to flee the site of sacrifice, and decapitated Daksha. The worthy warrior, born of a single strand of Sivas hair is the personification of valour, prowess, courage and ferocity arising out of righteous anger. Virbhadrasana, the asana that bears the name of this powerful warrior, has three forms. These three postures exude the dynamism of the character of their namesake. They energise and revitalise not only the practitioner, but also the onlooker. #yoganusasanam #yogakarona #arogyayoga #iyengaryoga #yogalife #virbhadrasana
