21.01.2022 Welcome Claire Palmer Hello, I am Claire Palmer and I am so excited to be given the opportunity to join the learning community at St. Mary Mackillop. I have grown up in the Catholic Education system, attending catholic primary school, high school and university. I come from a large and energetic family, I am the eldest of five girls. I was born in Geelong and moved to Tasmania when I was young. Growing up I spent my holidays and weekends at our beach house in Bicheno, on the ...east coast of Tasmania. Before I began high school, my family returned home to Geelong where I attended Sacred Heart College. After high school, I moved to Brisbane where I studied to become a teacher at the Australian Catholic University. I began my teaching career in 2013 at St Joseph's Primary School in Elsternwick, where I taught for six years in Years 2, 3 & 4 and held the role of Sustainability Leader. It was in this role that I was able to combine two of my passions, education and caring for the environment. I have spent the last two years as Middle School Leader at St Simon the apostle Primary School in Rowville. Within this role I have mentored and coached staff and continued to foster my love of education and lifelong learning. I am dedicated to being a positive and encouraging educator and I have a passion for building rapport with my students and nurturing their wellbeing. In my spare time I love to go camping, bushwalking and spend time with family and friends. I especially enjoy spending time with my grandmother and mother on the family farm in Wurdibuloc. In February this year I was married and my husband and I are currently building our first home in Teesdale. We are thrilled to be joining the Bannockburn community and parish. I look forward to joining the very vibrant and growing community that is St. Mary Mackillop Primary School. I am excited to make new connections, learn new things and contribute to your community. Community and belonging to a school and parish family is so important and I can’t wait to be a part of yours.

17.01.2022 GET THE KIDS OUTSIDE - RAIN, HAIL OR SHINE ‘Chaos to Calm Consultancy’: Did you know that 1 in 5 Aussie kids have never climbed a tree? We are raising a who...le generation of kids who are told Don’t get dirty or Put that stick down or You will fall & get hurt! We need to get our kids back in the dirt. Let them do what kids do best. Stop suffocating them with our fears & unrealistic expectations! Let them be wild. Get them outside rain, hail or shine. Let them explore in nature. Encourage them to learn from their mistakes. What’s the worst that could happen? They become adventurous.... Risk takers, creative thinkers. Brave. Courageous. Problem solvers... Thank you for sharing ‘Chaos to Calm Consultancy’!

15.01.2022 Welcome Ashley Hunter I was born in New Zealand and moved to Australia when I was 15. I completed Year 11 and 12 and then studied teaching at Melbourne University. After graduating University, I moved to London and taught at Thomas’ Battersea School for 2 years. I met my now husband in London and he was from Geelong. We left London and despite my best efforts to make Melbourne home, he won and we returned to Geelong. A move which I am now so thankful for as I proudly call Gee...long home! I have spent the past eight years teaching at Holy Spirit School in Manifold Heights. I have taught across many different year levels in my time at Holy Spirit School and also held an ICT Specialist teacher role. I am passionate about student wellbeing and for the last two years have been the Student Wellbeing Leader. I have also held the ICT Leader role which was equally rewarding. I absolutely love finding out what students are interested in and their strengths and tailoring learning to match these interests and strengths. I believe strongly in creating partnerships between students, their families and myself. I also believe learning and fun go hand in hand. Life is too short to be boring! I have two gorgeous (and slightly cheeky) children. On weekends, we love to spend as much time as we can outside. We love visits to the You Yangs, bush walks at Forrest, sunny days at the beach and spending time with our Border Collie, Cody. We own a caravan and like to go camping. One of our favourite things to do when we are camping is to toast marshmallows around the fire. In 2018, I did some casual relief teaching at St. Mary MacKillop school and the staff were incredibly welcoming and friendly. There was such a strong sense of community which I feel is so important in a school. I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to now be part of this community. I cannot wait to meet everyone, especially my class for 2021, as I know we are going to have the best time together

15.01.2022 Congratulations everyone. You made it to the holidays. Well done! Have a great holiday.

11.01.2022 New Staff for 2021 - Learning Support Officer Welcome Grant Welsh It’s with great pleasure I will join St. Mary McKillop in 2021. Bannockburn is a wonderful community and a vibrant place to live according to some friends who live there.... My name is Grant Welsh (44 years young). I was brought up in a large family with 3 brothers and 3 sisters. I am a proud husband of 21 years, father of twin boys aged 15, a 10-year-old son and our daughter Ruby the Golden Retriever. As a husband and father, I am very devoted to upholding the strong culture of the St. Mary McKillop community. We as a family are advocates for volunteering in the community, involved with the Alexander Thomson Cricket Club, Grovedale Tennis Club, Grovedale Football Club and Waurn Ponds War Memorial. I am a keen cricketer, gardener, woodworker, artist and a passionate Essendon Football Club supporter (Go Bombers). After finishing school, I worked at McCann’s Plumbing as a sales assistant. The next 8 years lead me to become a Store manager of two branches. The next challenge was at everyone’s favourite’s shed Bunnings. Bunnings had the pleasure of my attendance for 14 years. I was involvement in the Trade side of the business as an On the road Sales Representative. In 2018, with the discussion with my family, I decided to pursue a new career in Education. Kids are just simply amazing. Their perspective on life, enthusiasm for learning and positive attitude is refreshing for me. After completing a Certificate 1V in Education Support I started to work casually at a variety of schools in the Geelong Surf Coast area also volunteering at Barwon Valley and Hamlyn Views schools. I had a period of employment at Bannockburn YMCA before school and after school care. In March this year I was extremely proud in achieving a role as an Education Support role at Northern Bay Hendy St campus. As we are all aware this year has been very challenging. Working alongside a variety of year levels onsite at Wexford and Hendy St campus during the COVID period aloud me to experience different student development stages. Schools are wonderful places for our kids allowing to develop at their pace, develop strong friendships and allow us Learners to steer them to the path of success. My time at Northern Bay was just amazing, meeting kids from a variety of different backgrounds and many international students. This has certainly enriched my life for the better and made a positive impact that I intend bring to St Mary Mackillop in Bannockburn. I’m looking forward to work and meet you all in 2021. Hopefully it’s the year of the Bombers (crossing fingers) Grant Welsh. See more

My name is Jake Otto and I am really looking forward to commencing work as a Learning Support Officer in 2021 at the school. I have just completed my third year of my Bachelor of Primary Education at Deakin University, and will be completing the final year of my degree next year. Throughout this time, I have developed skills that have enabled me to engage a...nd support learners in the classroom. I might be a familiar face to some of you, as I have previously volunteered my time in the classroom and on camps. For those of you who I haven’t met, I am from Tasmania and moved to the ‘mainland’ in 2016. I enjoy surfing, play footy at Belmont and have been working as a barber for the last 10 years. I have a beautiful Kelpie puppy named Rosie who keeps me on my toes. As a learning support officer, I aim to encourage students to meet their learning and social goals, by providing support where needed; I am looking forward to working closely with the teaching staff to achieve this. Most importantly, I am excited to meet the staff and the students of the school and immerse myself in the school community. See more

07.01.2022 New Staff for 2021 - Learning Support Officer Welcome Ann-Marie Mercieca Hello to the wonderful St Mary MacKillop Bannockburn community. What a year it has been!! I am so excited to be joining your school team in 2021. This year is flying by very quickly and the end of 2020 will be upon us in no time at all (Thank goodness!). ... My name is Ann-Marie Mercieca and I’m a mum of 4 2 adult boys and 2 school age girls . My husband and I along with our girls (as well as our pet chickens, dog, cat and fish!) will be moving to the beautiful coastal town of Queenscliffe in January 2021 from Sunshine, West of Melbourne. Prior to becoming a Learning Assistant, my husband and I owned a large furniture manufacturing business in Derrimut and Tullamarine, supplying furniture across Australia for over 25 years. Over the last 16 years, we were regular holiday makers along the Bellarine and, just over 2 years ago we made the crazy decision to purchase and restore a 130 year old derelict fishermans cottage and eventually use it as a holiday house, but we fell in love with the house, (and already loved the town), so there was no other decision to make but to make the move to Queenscliffe!. During this time, (as things weren’t crazy enough!) after volunteering at my daughters’ primary school. I found that I really loved working in a school environment where I got to see beautiful smiles and receive warm thank you hugs every day, I decided to go back to school in 2019 to become a Learning Assistant. From the beginning of 2020 I was fortunate enough to work at a local Catholic school, St Lawrence in Derrimut where I have been working across all the grade 3 classes as well as supporting and building beautiful friendships with children with ASD, ADHD and family trauma. I absolutely love watching the children grow, reach new goals and encouraging them to be the best version of themselves. I look forward to bringing lots fun and laughter into the school community as well as developing positive relationships with those I work with; including colleagues, students, families and the community. I am very excited about joining the St Mary MacKillop community after a visit to your school and hearing such wonderful things about your community, I am very thankful and I am looking forward to meeting you all and working alongside the dedicated staff and wonderful children at St Mary MacKillop, I can’t wait to see everyone in 2021! 03.01.2022 Welcome Jeremy Lumsden I was born and raised in Warrnambool where I lived with my Mum, Dad and older brother. After graduating from Emmanuel College in 2003 I went on to study Business (Sport and Leisure Management) at La Trobe University. After completing university I worked for 6 years at a craft brewery in Port Melbourne before deciding that I wanted to continue my studies and pursue my interest in teaching. In 2016 I completed my Graduate Diploma in Primary Teaching at V...ictoria University. I have been teaching for four years now, my first twelve months after graduating I was employed as a casual relief teacher at a number of schools throughout Geelong and the western suburbs of Melbourne. The past three years I have been a classroom teacher at St Clare’s Catholic Primary School, Truganina where I have been very fortunate to work with students from years 3-6. Here I have been able to continue to share my knowledge and further my own development in all curriculum areas, especially Literacy, as well as gaining additional accreditation within Catholic studies. Outside of school I love everything sports! I enjoy playing and being part of the Geelong West Giants Football and Netball club and am a huge Collingwood fan! I am very active and can usually be seen heading to the gym, running, playing golf or out trying to surf. I also enjoy watching the NRL, NFL and NBA. I enjoy travelling and visiting new places, along with my partner we tend to head over to New Zealand once or twice a year to visit family. I am very excited about the opportunity to join the St Mary Mackillop Primary School as a classroom teacher and look forward the building strong relationships with students, parents and colleagues within the school community.
