21.01.2022 Today we honour the Feast of St. Andrew the Apostle. This also marks the beginning of the St. Andrew Novena or the Christmas Anticipation Prayer. Unlike the ty...pical nine-day Novena, the St. Andrew Novena is prayed daily, 15 times a day, from the Feast of St. Andrew to Christmas (November 30th - December 24th). The Novena is not addressed to St. Andrew, but to God Himself, asking Him to grant our request in honour of the birth of His Son, Jesus, at Christmas. The prayer places us mentally and spiritually at the nativity of our Lord, placing our petition before Him. This is a great Novena to help draw our minds to our Lord during Advent and guide us in our preperation for Christmas. , , , . , , , , .

19.01.2022 NAIDOC Week 2020 Always Was, Always Will Be. Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.... We are spiritually and culturally connected to this country. This country was criss-crossed by generations of brilliant Nations. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists. Australia has the world’s oldest oral stories. The First Peoples engraved the world’s first maps, made the earliest paintings of ceremony and invented unique technologies. We built and engineered structures - structures on Earth - predating well-known sites such as the Egyptian Pyramids and Stonehenge. Our adaptation and intimate knowledge of Country enabled us to endure climate change, catastrophic droughts and rising sea levels. Always Was, Always Will Be. acknowledges that hundreds of Nations and our cultures covered this continent. All were managing the land - the biggest estate on earth - to sustainably provide for their future. Through ingenious land management systems like fire stick farming we transformed the harshest habitable continent into a land of bounty. NAIDOC Week 2020 acknowledges and celebrates that our nation’s story didn’t begin with documented European contact whether in 1770 or 1606 - with the arrival of the Dutch on the western coast of the Cape York Peninsula. The very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples. Our coastal Nations watched and interacted with at least 36 contacts made by Europeans prior to 1770. Many of them resulting in the charting of the northern, western and southern coastlines of our lands and our waters. For us, this nation’s story began at the dawn of time. NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country a history which dates back thousands of generations. It’s about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian history. We want all Australians to celebrate that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet and to recognise that our sovereignty was never ceded. Always Was, Always Will Be.

08.01.2022 Prayer for Remembrance Day Let us pray for all who suffer as a result of conflict, and ask that God may give us peace: for the service men and women... who have died in the violence of war, each one remembered by and known to God; may God give peace. For those who love them in death as in life, offering the distress of our grief and the sadness of our loss; may God give peace. For all members of the armed forces who are in danger this day, remembering family, friends and all who pray for their safe return; may God give peace. For civilian women, children and men whose lives are disfigured by war or terror, calling to mind in penitence the anger and hatreds of humanity; may God give peace. For peacemakers and peacekeepers, who seek to keep this world secure and free; may God give peace. For all who bear the burden and privilege of leadership, political, military and religious; asking for gifts of wisdom and resolve in the search for reconciliation and peace; may God give peace. O God of truth and justice, we hold before you those whose memory we cherish, and those whose names we will never know. Help us to lift our eyes above the torment of this broken world, and grant us the grace to pray for those who wish us harm. 06.01.2022 Gospel Reflection for First Sunday of Advent Mark 13:33-37 The Word of God Beware, keep alert; for you do not know when the time will come. It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch. Therefore, keep awake - for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or at dawn, or else he may find you asleep when he c...omes suddenly. And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake." Mark 13:33-37 Some thoughts on today's scripture Jesus is like a householder who has gone abroad. He has left his servants that is, you and me in charge of his affairs, each one with their own task. What is my task, my role in this world? Stay awake because you do not know when the master will come back stay awake. How do we do that? Very simply. We keep in touch with those around us by each day doing our best to live lives of love, of compassion, of forgiveness, of honesty and integrity. We keep in touch with our God through lives of prayer. And the simplest and deepest prayer is to be aware of the active presence of God permeating every single moment of every single day. O Lord, help to recognise you and respond to you in love through every person and every experience of this day. Advent begins today. We spend this time preparing for the coming of Christ into our world. He is here already, of course, but he wants to come closer. Let me be one of his points of entry by keeping awake to open the door when he knocks. What has Christ put me in charge of? How am I doing? Will I be delighted to see him when he comes? Jesus is speaking of his second coming at the end of time. But each of us, before that, can look forward to coming before our Lord. It means that we must so live that it does not matter when he comes. Our life becomes a preparation for the vision of happiness. Five times in this short passage Jesus tells me to be attentive. I would rather settle down to a comfortable life. But the world of God is breaking in everywhere, like an invasion. I ask for the grace to seek God in all things, as St Ignatius says. A new world order began with Jesus, and I have a part to play in it. Every day I review what went on, and as G M Hopkins says, ‘I greet him the days I meet him, and bless when I understand’.

05.01.2022 Last Friday, our Cathedral parish came together to share a meal in Thanksgiving of all the wonderful work our volunteers have done in building our community and sharing faith in what has been a challenging year. The night was hosted by Fr Peter and the Cathedral staff. Many Thanks to all our volunteers who have adapted so well to living and sharing faith during the Covid-19 restrictions. We also remember members of our community who had to postpone volunteering this year. We look forward to seeing you and welcoming you back soon
