18.01.2022 Yesterday I learnt a very important lesson!!! Living in a Country of high weather temperatures, I have heard about the Wetbulb Globe temperature (WBGT) but neve...r really experience it. Yesterday, I took Orrich and Felix to an indoor arena for a bit of training out of the sun. I rode at 10.30am (dst) The temperature was a much cooler 29 degrees compared to the high 30s weve been having, but the humidity was 83%. I only worked both horses lightly for 20 minutes, but by the end they were panting like a dog. Id also seen my old school horse doing the same thing, just whilst standing in the paddock. At the time I thought he might have a bit of a respiratory problem from the smoke from the fires. But now I understand why. The WBGT formula works by adding the temperature to the humidity to give a level of heat stress in humans and horses and determine appropriate exposure levels to high temperatures. The Australian Equestrian Federation (EA)has a chart that easily show low and high risks, developed for competition. So yesterday, even though the temperature was reasonably low the WBGT score came out really high, being 34. The highest level is 39! According to EAs risk conditions, we were in the very high risk zone. I learnt a very important lesson yesterday. Even though I rode reasonably early in the day and the temperature was mild compared to other days, the humidity was so high it was dangerous to ride. Ive never been in this situation before. But will make sure in future I check the WBGT if the day is hot and humid. On a good note my ponies are perfectly alright. They got a good soaking in cold water and happily bounced back. Lesson Learnt.
