23.01.2022 Quote of the week... "Reading is the nourishment that lets you do interesting work." - Jennifer Egan (novelist).
23.01.2022 Given the gut is a dynamic structure that is opening and closing all the time (and the intestinal barrier is actually by design semi-permeable), every single one of us will have a level of leakiness. It's only when permeability/ leakiness is impaired that problems can arise, and of course it’s the degree of impairment that will determine how this plays out for someone’s health. Impaired intestinal permeability is not the end of the diagnostic story, it is part of it. The causes and solutions are multilayered, just like the gut itself! 21.01.2022 Eating local food is a powerful solution-multiplier. It reduces our carbon footprint, pollution, and waste, while creating dignified livelihood opportunities, rebuilding communities and local economies, and strengthening our bodies with healthy fresh food in the process. @economics_of_happiness. In other words, regional = resilience. So much gratitude for all of our regional producers. We are so lucky!
19.01.2022 I'm honoured and proud to call Prof. Fred Provenza a friend. The work from Fred and his colleagues is so important! And as always the way in which he communicates his findings is considered and eloquent. "As whole foods contain hundreds to-thousands of compounds that act synergistically to impact human health, adding synthetic nutrients to food sources often does not confer similar benefits compared to when these nutrients are ingested as phytochemically and biochemically-ri...ch whole foodswhether it be plant or animal foods. There are many whole-foods dietary options that could substantially improve human and ecological health whether they be vegetarian, pescatarian, or omnivorous. We contend that an omnivorous diet rich in whole foods, produced using sustainable agricultural practices that integrates plants and animals in agroecological ways (i.e., in harmony with natural systems), is most likely to benefit human and ecological health." Full paper here (with more exciting work in the pipeline to be published later this year): https://www.frontiersin.org/articles//fsufs.2020.00128/full

18.01.2022 Given that it's a term we'll see and hear more and more of in the future, I thought I'd explain what "nutrient density" actually means. Nutrient density describes higher levels of nutrients and beneficial secondary plant metabolites per unit of volume. Nutrient dense food is virtually the opposite of ‘empty calories’. There are two really important points to note:... "Nutrient density is a continuum, a sliding scale from very low to very high. Nutrients are not inherent characteristics of food, they accumulate. Organ meats, shellfish, egg yolks, dark green leafy vegetables, native foods, fermented vegetables and local/ homegrown produce all sit quite high on the nutrient density scale; but of course the nutrient profiles and density of these foods can vary dramatically depending on the conditions of growth/ level of processing/ storage etc. I didn't need any fancy tools or charts to tell me that these little strawberry guavas were full of goodness! It's good to keep in mind that humans evolved to intrinsically recognise that satisfying and diverse flavours, colours and smells are markers of nutrient density!
18.01.2022 Fascinating study looking at ferritin (stored Iron) concentrations in babies who had experienced either early cord clamping (less than 10 seconds) and delayed cord clamping (over 180 seconds). Delayed cord clamping at birth in full term low risk pregnancies resulted in improved iron status (ferritin concentration was 45% higher in delayed cord clamping group!), a reduced prevalence of iron deficiency at 4 months of age, and a reduced prevalence of neonatal anaemia. Given the seriousness of Iron deficiency with or without anaemia, these are amazing findings. What a difference a few minutes can make. 16.01.2022 These principles are the heart and soul of Naturopathic medicine.
14.01.2022 Anyone who has studied nutrition, naturopathic medicine and public health knows wellness is about much more than smoothies and supplements. Nutrition matters, a LOT... but an individual’s wellness encompasses physical, emotional, social, spiritual, vocational, financial, and environmental dimensions. It’s a word that means different things to different people, and whilst personal situations may be complex with how these factors influence a person, the actual concept of we...llness doesn’t have to be complex. If you’re deliberately making an effort to be healthier in mind and body (no matter how big or small you perceive that effort to be) then you’re working on your wellness. Sometimes you may require help with this if the circumstances are beyond your control, and many times you’ll be able to take steps that are within your control. At its core, to me, wellness is simply about living life more fully.
12.01.2022 Nailed it again!

08.01.2022 Numerous studies have shown that cattle fed and finished on pasture produce higher levels of Vitamin E and beta-carotene in the final meat product than cattle fed and finished on grain. As a consumer, how can you tell if the grass-fed beef you're choosing is actually more nutrient dense? You can have a good look at it! If the meat is a rich red colour, it's likely to have higher levels of Vitamin E (because Vit E is an antioxidant and higher levels delay the post-mortem o...xidative deterioration of meat - which produces a darkened, brown colour). If the fat is a yellow colour, it's likely to have higher levels of beta-carotene (which comes from the grass the animals are eating). You can also get to know your farmer directly, in my experience producers are MORE than happy to answer any and all of the questions you have about their product and farming practices. 07.01.2022 Everything in nature, including you, ebbs and flows with energy and motivation. It’s normal to feel a drop in motivation and mojo at times, but it’s also important to know how to get back on track. https://cultivatingwellness.com.au/information-isnt-all-we/
04.01.2022 This was our reward for getting in and tidying up one of our veggie patches this weekend. Whether it be animals or plants, I absolutely love knowing the story behind our food.
02.01.2022 Lastest post dives into bone health where I discuss calcium, magnesium, bone robbers and much more! Remember, bone health isn’t just an old person’s issue, it’s an everyone who has a skeleton’s issue! https://cultivatingwellness.com.au/getting-to-the-bones-of/#
01.01.2022 Wow! What an incredible insight into the beauty and busy-ness of our cells
01.01.2022 Bone health is NOT just an old person’s issue. Far from it! Our bones tend to grow at a pretty rapid rate until about the age of 30, at which point bones have reached their maximum strength and density (peak bone mass). After this, we tend to lose bone faster than we make it. Although there are many drivers of osteoporosis (genetics, poor diet, certain medications, low oestrogen etc) and all need to be addressed, one of the best things we can do for our bone health is LIF...T HEAVY S**T. The bones that are the strongest are the ones we put stress on. It’s absolutely a case of using it or losing it. Last year I realised I had to up my game (with a bit of reminding from my buddy and amazing PT Joy!). So I started with 2kg weights, then moved onto a crow bar, then bricks, then 5kg weights, then 10kg bags of chook seed mix, and today I was carrying around 25kg bags of organic feed for our pigs (yes, we just got piglets and yes, my husband sneakily snapped this pic of me!!). I'm not going to win any prizes for my strength, which pales in comparison to so many others, but my bones will thank me! And let's face it, strong feels pretty darn good! Off The Track Training
01.01.2022 Many hold the belief that a person’s immediate natural environment often presents them with exactly what they need at a particularly point in time. Ever since I’ve had my kids, this Holy Basil (Tulsi) has been thriving, despite getting very little attention! Every time I walk past it, I have have a little nibble... Holy Basil is known as the Queen of Adaptogens. Adaptogens promote restoration, recalibration and adaptation and when used appropriately, can be soooo helpful!... This is probably exactly what I’ve needed to support me with the transitions that have taken place in my life over the past 5 years (particularly with the motherhood side of things!). Interestingly, the Aloe Vera that lives in our bathroom is thriving... I wonder if it’s a sign I need a bit of collagen support for my ever-growing laugh lines!? Love to hear what you might have noticed growing/ thriving at the exact time you’ve needed it.
