18.01.2022 June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month! Bowel cancer affects 1 in 13 Australians and is currently the second biggest cancer related death in Australia. Screening is recommended every 1-2 years for everyone over the age of 50. 90% of bowel cancer cases can be treated if detected early. The Bowel Cancer Screening Test (also known as the Faecal Immunochemical Test) is the preferred method and can detect small amounts of blood in bowel movements. This test kit is readily available... from your GP or at most pharmacies. Positive results generally require further investigation via a Colonoscopy, which is a procedure allowing doctors to view the rectum and colon for polyps(small protrusion of tissue), abnormal areas and cancer. This service is offered at St Albans Endoscopy Centre. Speak to your GP to see if this is recommended for you. Show your support for Bowel Cancer Awareness by buying a Red Apple pin and/or donating to Bowel Cancer Australia For more information, you can speak to your doctor or visit the Bowel Cancer Australia website: https://www.bowelcanceraustralia.org/ References: Bowel Cancer Australia 2014, accessed 22 May 2017,
