25.01.2022 Year 1 had so much fun at Taronga Zoo! They enjoyed looking at all the amazing animals & the spectacular seal show! They also developed their mapping skills!



25.01.2022 Year 5 Takeover | Day 4 Thursdays see the DanceFever team come in and teach the students some new moves! Today we worked on our Hip-Hop routine and started work on one of our partner dances. The kids had a great time practicing their movement qualities, slow and graceful vs. fast and strong.

24.01.2022 Year 6 Takeover: Day 4 This week during Mathematics Year 6 have been exploring the strand Position. Year 6 have been working hard using google maps to find their way around Concord West. They have created detailed routes using landmarks, directional language and compass directions. We dont need navigation systems, our Year 6 Mathematicians have it covered!

24.01.2022 The Third Sunday of Advent The third candle is pink and symbolizes JOY. It is called the Shepard’s Candle, and is pink because rose is a liturgical colour for joy. The third Sunday of Advent is Gaudete Sunday and is meant to remind us of the joy that the world experienced at the birth of Jesus, as well as the joy that the faithful have reached the midpoint of Advent.



22.01.2022 A Year 5 Highly Commended Artwork from the Christmas Art Competition by Rebecca titled "Wrapped in Thoughts". These artworks have been chosen by staff and teachers at the school level for their creativity and connection to the scripture. Congratulations Rebecca!

22.01.2022 Year 3 Takeover : Day 2 Year 3 have been focusing on solving measurement and number problems using various strategies. We have enjoyed practising reading and recording time using our mini-clocks and whiteboards. Launch Tasks have been a great way to explore multiplication problems and solve them using mental and informal methods. We have been working hard to improve our ability to record our solutions using more than one strategy.

Our artworks are representations of the mythical Japanese dragon and also the beautiful cherry blossoms trees that have been celebrated in their culture for many centuries. Check out our Newman STEM students working hard on their innovative prototypes with Dr Simon Crook from CrookED Science. ... The students work hard to identify a real life problem in the world around them and follow the design thinking process to develop and make a solution. This year some of the problems identified are: germs spreading on surfaces, not being able to find products at supermarkets, being out in the sun for too long and so much more! 20.01.2022 Year 1 Takeover| Day 4 We couldnt go to Sydney Olympic Park for our walking excursion to the Mangroves so we went there virtually! We also looked at maps and satellite images of our local area and compared them!

We went outside at different times of the day and looked at where our shadows were on the ground. Did you know that your shadow is made because your body blocks light rays from the sun?

17.01.2022 Year 6 Takeover: Day 5 An insight into the Year 6 English Block. This term Year 6 has started exploring the Informative genre. Year 6 will be reading and writing a variety of Informative texts. Today, Year 6 engaged in a lesson distinguishing between facts and opinions. They enjoyed playing a talking and listening game of "I have, who has?". They also identified the language clues that indicate whether a text is factual by searching for technical vocabulary in an Informative text. Year 6 also love Literature Circles, where they practise and develop their reading skills through a variety of activities, both in their work books and using technology to enhance their learning.

17.01.2022 Year 3 Takeover | Day 3: 40 Second Challenge Year 3 were excited to participate in the Sydney Catholic Schools 40 Second Challenge. They displayed excellent ball skills with Mrs Rathbone in SPORT this week. Their focus skills included passing the basketball with control, changing direction and speed whilst moving with the ball. All students showed great sportsmanship and encouraged each other as they performed the Shake and Shimmy! ... Well done Year 3! #40secondchallenge #scs

16.01.2022 Exploring Science Week with Year 3! This years focus for Science Week was Deep Blue. Year 3 explored the impact of pollution on the oceans eco-system. Students looked at prototypes including Boyan Slatss Ocean Cleaner and The Seabin. The students were given an opportunity to discuss ways they could further improve some of these innovations (they were FANTASTIC). Year 3 finished off Science week with an artwork that shows the impact of pollution on marine life.

15.01.2022 Year 2 Takeover Day 5: A spotlight on Mathematics This week in Mathematics Year 2 have been exploring the use of mathematical language by solving various word problems. Today we started with a warm up where we sorted the different key language into the appropriate operation of either Multiplication or Division . ... The students were then given mixed word problems where they had to use the language presented to help them solve the given problem. It was great to hear each student communicate their knowledge and understanding of these concepts. Year 2 are Mathematicians!

14.01.2022 Year 5 Takeover | Day 3 Stage 3s Semester 2 Science unit is looking at the Material World content strand. Today Year 5 conducted a fair test to identify the impact that a marble can have on different substances. The students dropped a marble into 6 different substances, including salt, sand, jam, honey, sugar and flour. Things got a bit sticky, and the students learned lots about the properties of different materials. In our next lesson, we will be discussing our results and identifying the implications of these!

11.01.2022 Year 4 Takeover Day 5: Fun with Fossils Our students have been learning about the content strand Earth and Space in their Science and Technology lessons this term. Today we made fossils using modelling clay. What a fantastic learning experience for our Year 4s!

10.01.2022 Year 3 Takeover | Day 5 RELIGION: Year 3 was lucky enough to have Miss De Grazia come in and tell the story of The Widows gift. With a focus on religious literacy, we identified and clarified the vocabulary in the story to help us understand it better. We then reflected on the I wonder questions in a variety of ways. ... GEOGRAPHY: Students have been practising their mapping skills in locating Australias States, Territories and cities. We have also begun exploring some of Australias natural features. The students enjoyed researching the characteristics of the Australian deserts and how their climate patterns influence flora and fauna. Throughout the term we will continue researching features our iconic rainforests, rivers, reefs and mountain ranges.

10.01.2022 Year 4 Takeover Day 2: As part of our Religious Education unit, Year 4 have been learning about the life and legacy of Australias first saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop. The students worked in small groups to conduct their research. They explored the impact Mary had on the people she interacted with throughout her daily works. Today each group had an opportunity to share their presentations with their teachers and peers. Well done Year 4!

09.01.2022 Year 5 Takeover | Day 2 Year 5s Term 3 Guided Reading sessions have seen students in groups of 5, cooperatively reading their chosen text. As they read through their book, they work together through the comprehension skills of Predicting, Clarifying, Questioning, Summarising and Reflecting. Being together with their group allows them the opportunity to discuss the book as they read, working through more challenging vocabulary and concepts. Due to their independence and capability, Mr Simpson and Miss Phillips are able to move flexibly between the groups, checking in as they read and complete their activities. We are hearing lots of deep and insightful discussion!

07.01.2022 Year 5 Takeover | Day 5 Weve come to the end of Week 3! We spent a dreary day today working through our various lessons. One of these was Art, where the students continued to develop their understanding of different artistic styles and techniques, as they prepare to plan their artworks for the Christmas Story Art Exhibition and Competition. Our art lessons this week have included sharing research about different art styles and analysing various representations of The Christmas Story to identify key aspects and symbols the students may be able to include in their own artworks. 06.01.2022 Year 3 Takeover : Day 1 SCIENCE Year 3 are the up and coming Ecophysiologists of 2020. We have been identifying the features of living things by going on nature walks and using the MRS GREN acronym to explore whether an organism is alive. The use of branching keys have helped us categorise a range of living things based on their unique characteristics. We will begin delving deeper into the lifecycles of various creatures and their relationship with the living and non-living environment around them. We also enjoyed creating our Science Week artworks about the effects of ocean pollution.

06.01.2022 Year 2 Takeover Day 2: Sporting Superstars Today Year 2 enjoyed participating in Invasion Games with Mrs Rathbone. Their focus skills included dodging a moving object and for a challenge, dodging several moving objects while dribbling a soccer ball. Mrs Rathbone was impressed with their positive attitudes, amazing skills and enthusiasm!

04.01.2022 Year 5 Takeover | Day 1 In Stage 3 this semester we are studying Factors that Shape Places in Geography. Year 5 has begun this study by looking at the different climate zones around the world and the biomes that have developed around these. We created mindmaps and brainstorms to represent what we have learned about these biomes, including temperature variations and native flora and fauna!

01.01.2022 Year 4 Takeover Day 3: Sport Year 4 were keen participants in several Invasion Games this week with our Sports teacher Mrs Rathbone. Their focus skills included: Passing the netball with control and accuracy... Understanding the job of a defender, and Knowing how to mark an opponent. Mrs Rathbone was so impressed with the students teamwork and enthusiasm! What a fabulous team effort!

01.01.2022 Year 2 Takeover Day 3: Celebrating the life and work of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop Year 2 have been learning about Saints throughout their Religious Education lessons. This week, we completed a research task on Mary MacKillop, the first Australian saint. Her feast day was last Saturday, the 8th of August. In pairs, we used a QR code to access a website about Marys life and her work with the Sisters of Mercy and produced a Google Slides presentation about our findings. We are very proud of the presentations made by our students and Year 2 cannot wait to show them to their classmates!
