25.01.2022 Our Library Team (a very loving bunch) spend considerable time on planning special events to help ignite and foster a love of reading in our students, and so for Library Lovers Week the 'Blind Date With a Book' idea was born. The team put out beautifully wrapped books on Monday and Tuesday morning with a short description for students to borrow. It was wonderful to see our secondary students take a chance and eager to unwrap their chosen book!

25.01.2022 Having the chance to make music together and perform was certainly something to celebrate at our packed out Sounds of Celebration concert. Music has looked very different this year, but it has also been something that has kept us connected and closer together. Our students have managed to explore new technologies, try new things, think differently, problem solve, become more independent and have achieved great heights. All of which were evident in their final performances of the year together in front of a full house.

25.01.2022 The Music department brought plenty of cheer and joy to our community in the final week with pop-up Christmas Carols around the College. Music students treated ...staff, students, parents and even our neighbours at AVEO to a variety of traditional and new Christmas carols to get us into the spirit. See more

25.01.2022 Lunch-time Open Mic sessions never fail to bring the crowds and have everyone singing along. The 7-Up Band started us off with Nirvana's 'Come as You Are' followed by 'Pumped Up Kicks'. Year 5 student Lily debuted at Open Mic singing 'Lost Boys' and Emma rounded out the session with a stunning rendition of 'Counting Stars'.

25.01.2022 Today we stop to reflect and remember the sacrifices of those who gave up so much so that we may have the freedoms we do today. #lestweforget2020 #remembranceday

24.01.2022 Our annual Sounds of Swing concert was held on Saturday, with a little twist thanks to Covid-19. Held outside on the Primary Oval, with family members sitting in Covid-Safe circles, the concert featured musicians from our Jazz Ensemble, Stage Band and Jazz Orchestra under an approved Covid-Safe Plan. It was a fantastic afternoon of music, the highlight being a 60-piece super band formed for the finale. ... Many thanks to all our families for being flexible around the staging of the event our student musicians were very appreciative.

24.01.2022 Our Arts and Music Leadership Ceremony recognised the tremendous efforts our Music and Arts leaders have contributed to College life this year, as we welcomed our 2021 representatives. We look forward to seeing the creative ideas and leadership they will bring.

24.01.2022 Happy World Teacher's Day. We're sure our students would agree, we think we have the best teachers! This year, despite the hurdles that kept coming, they have certainly risen to and above the challenge. Their commitment to relationships and connection has always remained at the fore, shown in the smiling faces and achievements of our students every day. From dressing up, to singing at open mic, to facing students on the sporting field, coaching teams, attending events, cooking breakfasts, marking all night, providing care and support, challenging young minds, telling bad jokes, teaching lessons in and beyond the classroom and so much more... we thank you all for everything you do.

24.01.2022 Year 6 students shared their ideas for our region with Ted O'Brien MP - Federal Member for Fairfax in a visit this week, as they continued their learning about the Westminster System and how all levels of government work in our country. Mr O'Brien also stopped by to check in on the progress of our sensory garden that is currently under construction near the Hub. The garden, which includes a flowing water feature, is thanks to one of 11 Local Schools Community Fund grants, delivered earlier this year across the Fairfax electorate.

24.01.2022 Last but certainly not least of our sponsors of the Visual Arts Exhibition this year is Jacinta and the team at Bowerbird of Eumundi. Jacinta is a true advocate for buying and supporting local, with her shop that features exquisite handmade wares of local and Australian Artisans. We are very blessed that she has also chosen to support us! Thank you Bowerbird of Eumundi.

23.01.2022 The amazing efforts, energy and enthusiasm in our IGNITE program was on display at Friday's celebration showcase. To see the journey and achievements of each of our Year 5 and 6 students in this unique program was truly astounding. The IGNITE program provides opportunities for natural acceleration where talented or creative children who hunger for domain understandings have the opportunity to explore and be immersed within the pursuit of interests.... Our passionate team of educators created environments for our students to explore and be immersed in pursuing their interests and passions, nurturing each child’s creative trajectories. This was through the domains of real life maths, dance, architecture, sport science, building & design, animation, creative writing, gardening, photography, journalism, robotics, business and deep thinkers. This resulted in projects such as the design and creation of a mountain bike track, short stories, landscape and garden designs, our first St Andrew's Primary Newspaper, VR and 3D printing and so much more!

23.01.2022 The smiles and pure joy absolutely says it all. What a great day had by our Prep to Year 2 students at their swimming carnival in our wonderful Aquatic Centre.

Concluding their unit of learning on the Australian electoral and democratic system, the students formed their own parties, ran campaigns and finished with their presentations to a live audience. Citizens of St Andrew's then went to the ballot boxes to cast their votes.

21.01.2022 WOW! WOW! WOW! The Year Eleven Senior Drama students have absolutely outdone themselves in their IA1 assessment tasks, featuring scenes from Daniel Evans’ Absurd Theatre play Opening a Fuzzwallop’s Frame of Mind. Their original adaptations featured a unique selection of Absurd Theatre conventions, highlighting the purposelessness of the genre and existentialism through obscure theatrical choices. Each pair created a social comment as the running theme of their piece, exploring a vast selection of topical issues, communicated with strength of character, projection and professionalism. We are in awe once again of the ability of this cohort. Congratulations!

21.01.2022 What a treat for our Preppies to have the Jazz Ensemble perform for them during lunch time!

21.01.2022 At what other school can you see the Deputy Principal busting out Sweet Caroline, IT staff getting everyone to their feet with Hey Baby and a bunch of amazingly talented students rocking it out? Open Mic took it to the next level today! Encore, encore!!! If you missed the Live Stream, check the video post below.

21.01.2022 Year 11 Drama shared in immense success last week with their original adaptations of Matt Camerons Ruby Moon, in support of their unique Directorial Visions created this term. Congratulations to all students we cant wait to see your skills in action in your IA1 in Term 4.

20.01.2022 Problem solved. Our maker space students were given a problem from Prep teacher Mrs Linthorne to design a musical instrument coupled with technology, that the Prep students could use to follow instructions (algorithms) as part of their digital technologies lesson. Using makey-makey technology and the design-thinking process, a group of Year 5 students designed a foot piano, using coding and circuitry, that then projects and replicates to a large screen. ... The group have spent many lunchtimes designing and building this and today presented it to PLT, who were very excited to learn all about how it works and start using it.

20.01.2022 Budding young architects in Years 5 and 6 spent this afternoon learning how a 3D printer works, and how it's use can aid with design. A couch was their first challenge to design, as they move onto creating more complex challenges as part of the IGNITE program. IGNITE, for students in Years 5 and 6, is a learning enrichment program which is constructed around students interests, learning styles and preferred modes of expression.

19.01.2022 Last week, Year 12 Marine Science and Biology students collected field data at Heron Island on the Great Barrier Reef. While the data collected contributes to their QCAA Student Experiments and ATAR, it also highlights the rich diversity of the reef and how it is adversely affected by climate change. The trip's broader aim is to build students’ connection and understanding of the inhabitants of the reef to inspire their stewardship of our ocean planet.

19.01.2022 Kia, Ethan and Byron are grand finalists in the Future Anything your entrepreneurs competition, pitching their awesome business #AquaShield LIVE and online tomorrow. Their prototype and business idea focuses on replacing shark nets with a better and safer alternative to protect marine life. "I love spending time outdoors and designing and engineering. I've had a great passion for helping the environment ever since I watched my first David Attenborough documentary, it made me ...realize how amazing the planet is that we're living in today," Kia said. "I remember sitting at the desk on a Sunday afternoon and thinking about how we take so many things for granted in this world and we are not taking any consideration for the environment, so that’s when I decided that our main focus would be on protecting the environment, and the idea grew from there." 19.01.2022 What's not to love about a day spent building and programming robots? Our Year 4 students thoroughly enjoyed their robotics immersions day in The Hub, designed to introduce students to the Lego EV3 robots that they will be using in both Year 5 and 6 as part of their Digital Technologies program. Each class visited the Think Lab for a day where they learn to design, build, program and then battle the robots in a sumo style competition. The days helps students to not only learn... about robotics and programming, but also gives them an opportunity to develop other skills such as problem solving, collaboration, resilience, as well as critical and creative thinking. We are sure you will see from the photos how much fun and excitement that was had.

18.01.2022 Sunshine Coast Lightning star shooter and all-round amazing woman Peace Proscovia was the perfect guest presenter for our Primary and Secondary Sports awards this week. Congratulations to all our sports awards winners this year, and to every student who participated in sport in 2020!

18.01.2022 Our Preppies travelled to @Australia Zoo last week, for a day packed full of fun and adventure. 17.01.2022 Over the past few weeks Secondary co-curricular Visual Art students have been involved in an Activating Spaces project. Student worked through a process of meeting with their client (Mr Tony Innes Risk and Compliance Officer) and responding to a design brief requiring artwork to activate the wall space around a fire extinguisher in the Music Faculty corridor in I Block. A range of creative strategies were utilised such as brainstorming, researching, concept drawing and concept development using photographic and digital media processes. These ideas were then considered as a team before final design was approved by the College Executive. Students then used their artmaking skills to scale up the image on the wall and hand paint the final linework.

I don’t think any of us realised how lucky we were to go to school at somewhere like St Andrew's until we left," she said. See more

12.01.2022 Our Principal Mr Chris Ivey reminded us last night at the Secondary Presentation Evening, that it's not the challenges we face that define us, it's our capacity and how we respond to them that does. This year has certainly been one to live true to that statement. Congratulations to all our award winners and to all students who rose above the challenges of 2020. We hope you take every hurdle you conquered and every lesson learnt into 2021 and beyond, knowing you do have capacity and you are a better person for how you have responded this year.

After many successful years of celebration, 2016 saw a change in name, format and location, under the direction of Mr Ben Hedstrom. The Thomson Art Prize was also established and named after our longest serving member of our department- the fabulous Mrs T. The Hub is now transformed for one week every year into the Visual Art Exhibition, a celebration focusing on the Visual Arts in a professional gallery style event. Join us tonight for the opening night and awarding of the Thomson Art Prize https://events.humanitix.com/visual-arts-exhibition-opening

All of our performers today and also those in the heats and auditions in the lead-up to today, showed courage and spirit. But there could only be one winner. Congratulations to our Year 12 band from Burkett House, who brought the house down, performing 'Smoko' by the Chats.... Many weeks of preparation and behind the scenes work has gone into putting this competition together, and we thank everyone who got involved. We can't wait to see it back bigger and better in 2021.

09.01.2022 Polished Performers at Twilight Recital Last Thursdays event in the Studio brought together a wonderful array of musicians. 08.01.2022 We held a small but lively Year 9 Readers’ Cup competition recently and it was wonderful to see that some of the students were competing for the fifth year in a row. Our eventual winners were Ffion P, Anya V, Ava D and Jessica G. Our Year 7 Readers’ Cup competition was very competitive this year with even the audience being challenged with questions on their Year 7 prescribed novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The ultimate winners were Sophie T, Zara L, Lucy S and Maddy W. This team will now have the honour of representing our College in the Sunshine Coast Interschool Year 7 Readers’ Cup competition to be held in October. This is the only Interschool Competition to go ahead this year with all the other Year Level competitions cancelled. We congratulate the girls and wish them all the best.

07.01.2022 At St Andrew's, our staff are committed to their role as life-long learners. This includes continually engaging in professional development opportunities to ensure our students have the most relevant and up to date educational and developmental learning journey. The relationships between students and staff is what sets us apart at St Andrew's. However it takes a huge investment of time, commitment and passion from our staff to develop the skills necessary to build and maintai...n these relationships. Research shows us that the teacher-student relationship in the classroom is paramount to the learning that occurs, so during the student free day last week, all teaching staff had the rare opportunity to come together for a whole day to explore a relational approach to teaching and learning. Marg Thorsborne helped us understand the basic philosophy & principles of restorative practice as well as the link between pedagogy, social & emotional literacy, neuroscience and relational practices. This seminar, asked us as educators to explore how a relational approach to responding to challenging behaviour might differ (or not) from our current practice and our core beliefs about behaviour & discipline.

06.01.2022 CURRICULUM CORNER // There were few flying objects around the science labs this week, as our Year 11 Physics students delve into a unit of work focusing on gravity and electromagnetism. While investigating the fundamental physics behind two dimensional projectile motion, students launched steel balls from a high elevation to a low elevation to see how gravity and launching angle affects range. Fun fact: Did you know Galileo was the first known person to describe projectile motion correctly?

These are the three pillars of conservation which students in Year 9 learnt about as part of their Science and Humanities Unit on Endangered Animals. Students observed firsthand the unique adaptations animals have developed around the world to suit their environments. They learnt about the issues causing species decline, how animals become classified as endangered and conservation strategies to increase species numbers.

03.01.2022 Did you know the inventor of Pet Rocks made a cool $15million in 6 months. From selling rocks. Lots of rocks at $3.95. Then think about shuttershades, tamagotchis, snuggies... and the multiple fads we waste money on each year. Fads. Markers of popular culture that seemed like good ideas at the time. From low-tech doodads of plastic and stone to the latest in digital technology. People buy them, and they make money. Gobs of it. Year 9 students enjoyed financial literacy sessions today, discussing the pitfalls of spending money on fads, but also the flip side on how a crazy idea can make some serious dough.

Year 7 students Chloe, Lucy, Hannah and Sammy took out first place in the Middle School Entrepreneurial Challenge with their 'Robotiser'. Their robot is designed to automatically go along and clean handrails, particularly at airports but could be used in other areas where there are handrails frequently used. Jesper, Toby and ...Amelie created 'Locked in Lockers,' a locker using a senor linked to a wristband, that would provide a place for skaters to store their belongings at skate parks. They were awarded second place. Indy and Alex, competed above their age group in the open sumo competition and received first place in the High School division. In a mechanical take on Japan’s national sport, students construct and program robots to create sumobotsstrong robots capable of pushing other robots out of a ring.

01.01.2022 St Andrew’s were represented by two teams at the First Lego League Lego Robotics regional competition on Saturday. Our first team was made up of Year 5 & 6 students who have been working on this as part of the Ignite program. The other team were Year 7 students who participate in robotics as a cocurricular activity. Both teams had a great day and demonstrated huge improvements in the robot challenges throughout the day. The competition is judged in three core areas: Robot Gam...es, Innovation Project and Core Values. There is a huge amount of work and time that goes into the preparation for all these judging areas. Congratulations to our Year 7s who were awarded the Breakthrough award which celebrates a team that made significant progress in their confidence and capability in both the Robot Game and Innovation Project and are a shining example of excellent Core Values. They demonstrate that they understand that what they discover is more important than what they win. We love how this award celebrates the fact that our teams performed well in all judging areas across the day. FIRST Australia #createopportunities #morethanrobots #STEM #robotics
