25.01.2022 Sunday afternoon and the swell finally cleaned up and actually got quite surfable for a few hours :-)

24.01.2022 So whats all this fuss about Exmouth Gulf? The Subsea 7 corporation wants to build a 500 hectare pipe launching facility at Heron Point. Massive steel pipes ...being assembled for the offshore gas industry will be bundled onshore and dragged across tidal flats, corals, sponges and sea grass beds before being towed north through the Ningaloo Marine Park. The Shire of Exmouth wants to wind back local zoning protections to allow this. Out of several alternative locations further north in the Pilbara, Subsea 7 have chosen a sensitive greenfield site close to the World Heritage area at Ningaloo and the crucial mangrove communities at the Bay of Rest. The project requires 10km of rail line and a 380m rock launchway that extends across the beach. These pictures from Subsea 7s operation in Scotland give you some idea of what we are looking at. The Heron Point facility entails excavation, land-clearing, lighting, rock dumping, dredging and seabed scouring in an important nursery area for Ningaloo Reef. Put simply, the environmental damage and disruption associated with this project outweigh any likely benefit. Worse than that, it adds pressure to Ningaloo Reefs feeder system. 21.01.2022 Further update Sat am: the number of survivors has been revised to 7. :( Update: Only 15 of the 150 short-finned pilot whales that stranded en masse at Hamelin Bay, 10km north of Augusta early this morning, are still alive.

18.01.2022 A rescue operation is underway in in the South West after nearly 150 beached pilot whales were reported north of Hamelin Bay. Parks and Wildlife Service staff ...are currently on site with vets providing assistance to help save the remaining live whales - 50 of which are on the beach and 25 which are in the shallows. 11.01.2022 One of the coolest things about Stand Up Paddling is the ability to witness at close distance, but without interfering, with nature. Pretty great way to start your day :-) The dolphins were shepherding the herring up to the shoreline and then racing through the bait ball of fish.

09.01.2022 The full sunset at Koh Lipe couldnt be seen from the beach as it was facing too much to the North so 3 SUP paddlers paddled out past the point and the yacht anchorage to get the full effect. Time well spent I think :-) Looks like they were enjoying too.

"That concerns Kim Prather, a scientist who studies the chemistry of the atmosphere at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Shes worried about the potential for the virus to become airborne near the ocean." All the rules for six-foot social distancing when youre at the beach do not apply, Prather said. "If its windy, the exhaled virus will travel farther than six feet. That rule only applies for still air or indoors, Prather said. If a surfer is exhaling, the virus in those droplets could spread on the surface of the ocean and be infectious for hours, she said." "The Los Angeles Times reports that the World Health Organization has downplayed the possibility of COVID-19 transmission through aerosols. But a study published March 17 in the New England Journal of Medicine found the virus can be viable and infectious for three hours when suspended in a mist.
