The name Stannum is Latin for Tin. Hence the house name, Stannum House, being the brainchild of John Holmes Reid who made his first fortune in tin ...mining at a mine called Stannum. John Holmes Reid came to Australia in the 1850’s from Scotland and set up farming in Tenterfield, with a lucky strike with his Tin mine, he soon became wealthy. During this period Tenterfield was being considered amongst other towns for the capital of Australia with the original federation speech occurred in Tenterfield with Sir Henry Parkes. With this in mind John Holmes Reid aspired to be Prime Minister of Australia and entered into Federal politics. This resulted in the creation of Stannum House hopefully to become government house. Unfortunately Tenterfield was not chosen for the capital and Stannum became the centre of Tenterfield society and the Reid family home. John Holmes Reid died in 1928 just prior to the Wall Street collapsed and since the most of the family’s investments were tied up in the stock exchange the family lost all including 14 servants. During Second World War. The federation government commandeered Stannum under the war act as it was considered Stannum’s construction would withstand a bomb blast. 1990’s Stannum was purchased by Kirk Jensen and Peter Gelhaar, professionals in historical restoration who restored it to its current grandeur. The unique artwork found in every room in Stannum is a feastfor the eyes. Ceilings are spectacular and top quality curtaining carpets and light fitting. Completely original Victorian Italian décor.
