25.01.2022 The Governor-General has advised me that The Queen has approved the award of the Victoria Cross for Australia to Ordinary Seaman Edward Teddy Sheean for his a...ctions on 1 December 1942, when he sacrificed his life to save his shipmates during the sinking of the HMAS Armidale. Teddy Sheean was an extraordinary Australian and Australia will remain eternally grateful for his service, dedication and sacrifice.
24.01.2022 A long journey home for the Unknown Australian Soldier Remembrance Day at the Australian War Memorial in 1993 was a particularly significant occasion; that year... an unknown Australian soldier was entombed in the Memorial grounds. The idea of reburying the remains of an Australian who lost his life in the horrific trench warfare of the Western Front had existed since the 1920s. In 1992, a decision was taken to reinter a digger in a tomb in the Hall of Memory as an appropriate way of marking the 75th anniversary of the 1918 Armistice. In late 1993, Memorial Director Brendan Kelson travelled with a small team to Adelaide Cemetery, near Villers-Brettoneaux in France, where the Commonwealth Graves Commission had identified four resting places that might yield a suitable candidate for repatriation. These men had been reburied from various battlefields after the war; their identities were lost to time. The first grave that was exhumed held the remains that would travel to Australia and be laid to rest at the Memorial. The remains were handed to the delegation which would accompany them on their five day journey to Canberra. 23.01.2022 Seventy-five years ago today, on 15 August 1945, Prime Minister Ben Chifley addressed the nation: Fellow citizens, the war is over. The Japanese government has... accepted the terms of surrender imposed by the allied nations. The Second World War was over. Spanning six years, the war was the most destructive conflict in human history. The defeat of Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and Imperial, Militarist Japan - claimed 60 million lives; 6 million Jews were murdered in the Holocaust. A life was extinguished every three seconds. The world would never be the same again. In Australia, 15 August 1945 was gazetted as VP Day: Victory in the Pacific Day. Hundreds of thousands of jubilant Australians spilled into the streets of the nations cities, swept up in celebratory pandemonium. No one that day needed reminding of the value of freedom - or the price that had been paid for it. There was relief that the war was finally over, but apprehension about the future. To mark the 75th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War the Memorial has curated a range of articles, collection items, events and first-hand accounts from veterans. Around this Remembrance Day, well be sharing two more instalments of Bruces amazing story. So stay tuned! *Please note that there is an error in the captions for this video. 15.01.2022 The Governor today released a special message for the people of Amiens, a tiny town outside Stanthorpe in Queenslands Southern Downs, with a population of 293.... Amiens is part of the original Pikedale Solider Settlement, an area of 17,400 acres set aside for soldiers (and their families) returning from World War 1. This year marks 100 years since the Prince of Wales opened the trainline to Amiens, and 100 years since the soldier settlers created the infrastructure to serve the new communities, including the Amiens State School. The Governor and Mrs de Jersey were very sorry they could not attend the centenary celebrations of Amiens State School and visit the Amiens Legacy Centre last weekend, as their visit was disrupted by COVID-19. 13.01.2022 Today is Vietnam Veterans Day. Each year, on 18 August, we commemorate the men of D Company, 6RAR who fought in the battle of Long Tan in 1966. On that day, 10...8 Australian and New Zealand soldiers fought a pitched battle against over 2,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops in a rubber plantation not far from the small village of Long Tan. The Australians prevailed, but only after fighting in torrential rain for four hours. Eighteen Australians lost their lives and 24 were wounded, the largest number of casualties in one operation since the Australian task force had arrived a few months earlier. After the battle the bodies of 245 enemy soldiers were found, but there was evidence that many more bodies had been carried away. #VietnamVeteransDay Read more about the battle of Long Tan: http://ow.ly/A1k550AT7He Image: After the battle of Long Tan weary men of Delta Company, 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiments, gather on a landing zone for a quick meal before returning to the battlefield.
