06.01.2022 Sam Giacca is one of the great characters of the Granite Belt food scene growing and now selling fresh produce - there’s not much he doesn’t know about fresh ...fruit and vegetables. He’s loves his fruit and vegie shop, loves fresh food cooked simply and while he is no longer a professional farmer, still loves to grow fruit and vegies. He’s also heartened to see young families growing things at home - and has some sage advice to - keep it simple - maybe that’s his motto in cooking, growing and enjoying. And it’s not hard to trace where his love of food comes from - he’s the son of immigrants from Sicily his recipes come from his mother - simple, fresh and flavourful. He’s operating his iconic shop, in the different locations, for the past 30 years or so. I’ve farmed for most of my life my farming was wholesaling and retailing also and then about 20 years ago I decided to stop farming all together and concentrate on the wholesale/retail business, Sam said. He said when he realised it was becoming harder to sell fruit to supermarkets in this country than it was to sell to export he decided the writing was on the wall and switched away from growing and it’s gotten worse over the years no longer just sunblush etc. Now it’s the wrong size, it’s the wrong colour - the pink ladies aren’t red enough and all this garbage, he said. I started farming at 16 and finished at 46 - I’ve still got the land and everything and I still have a few trees that I potter around with. I do miss the farming but not the politics involved in fruit farming these days. While he admits he misses the farming days when green grocers and not supermarkets ruled the retail roost, these days he’s quite content to chat directly to his customers over a nice pink lady apple or two. I sell everything that is grown locally plus we go to the Brisbane markets everyday to choose pawpaw or citrus or tropical that aren’t in season here, Sam explained. I do enjoy it - for starters my business is right at home - my house is right next door - it’s a classic how good is that! I have the world’s biggest pantry! he laughed. Unlike farming you have got an assured income! While he sells vegetable, growing is a passion and he is happy to see so many people growing their own veggies to supplement what they buy. My parents came from Sicily - hence the way my mum cooked, he said. My mum would leave for house for an hour, go up the paddock and she’d come back with a big basket of dandelion and milk thistle, turnip weed and wild fennel. I still pick some wild turnip and dandelion. Dandelion tea is trendy now but back in my day it was peasant food - in Sicily they couldn’t afford meat or chicken - their meal was always fish from the ocean, wild herbs and fruit. And for those looking to start their own small gardens particularly to teach their young kids about gardening his advice is keep it simple. Just stick to basics - put a zucchini plant in, zucchini’s will grow - as they get bigger you can put a few more things in - you always have to have a couple of tomato bushes they can produce for such a long time, he said. Once you get the hang of it you can get into anything you like - go for it baby!! If you don’t know him, you can find Sam Giacca at Sams Farm Fresh Fruit and Veg - 44 Middleton Road, Cottonvale.
