24.01.2022 What exercise helps riders with their jumping, dressage, games, and all other equestrian sports? Its pole work! (aka grid work, cavalettis and more). And even ...Olympians and top dressage riders do it! Pole work helps improve riders balance, accuracy, security and control. It is good for teaching a horse to become adaptable and think for themselves. Find out more in this months Discipline of the Month. https://ponyclubaustralia.com.au//07-Pole-Work-August-2020

20.01.2022 "" "". " 80 " " "... " , " How many of us have said something similar to the above? I have uttered every single one of these phrases, and then some. The worst one was when I won a 80cm SJI Championship - I felt so proud, and then this small voice in the back of my head said " , 80". Today Im here to tell myself and everyone else that we need to stop saying "only" and "just" when we talk about our efforts and achievements. We work damn hard. We show up in the early mornings, late at night, in rain wind and hail. We worry about our horses feed, we get physios vets and farriers to mind and monitor them. We read everything on the internet to better educate ourselves, and we get lessons to become the best we can be. We care deeply about our horses and work hard to ride them the best we can. We ride and compete at a level that we are capable of, and that is safe for us to have fun and be competitive at. So no, we are not "just" doing a certain level or class. We worked hard and we have every right to be proud of the journey it took to get there, and of our achievements. There is no threshold for qualification to be considered a "real" rider or competitor. If you enter an arena at A and proceed down the centre line, you are doing dressage. If you enter an arena and jump a course of fences, you are showjumping. If you do a dressage test, jump a course of fences, and go cross country, you are eventing. Do not diminish the work, love and care that you put into this sport. Do not minimise your accomplishments, or belittle what its taken you to get to where you are today. When you say "just" or "only", you dont just minimise your own accomplishments or put yourself down, you also set an example to others that they too are "just" and "only". You are not "just". You are not "only". You are. So go do it. Enjoy it. Smash it

05.01.2022 . Our horses give us so much throughout their lifetime and so we want to give them the best and most comfortable life possible, particular...ly as they get older. As horses age, changes to behaviour, dentition and digestive function may be seen which may result in weight loss. They are also more prone to the development of a number of diseases such as Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID) also known as Cushings Disease. Fortunately, many of the effects of ageing can be well managed with alterations to our horses nutrition and husbandry. In this article we hope to give you some information about the possible effects of ageing on our horses, how we can best manage these and some feeding recommendations. One of the most common causes of concern to horse owners with older horses is the difficulty of maintaining adequate body weight and condition. Before making changes, it is important to determine the cause of weight loss. A sudden or gradual drop in weight could be a result of feed management practices, diet, underlying diseases or a combination. Here is a quick check list of common causes of weight loss in your ageing horse to check for: Change in herd dynamics and pecking order has your horse dropped to the bottom of the pecking order and missing out on feed as a result? If so it would be worthwhile putting them in a separate yard or paddock for feeding to ensure they have the chance to consume their whole meal Poor dentition as well as losing weight, if your horse has had a case (or ongoing cases) of choke, diarrhea or colic, this may be indicative of dental problems. Another possible indication of poor dentition or insufficient chewing is the presence of fibrous material longer than 3.7mm in their manure. Chewing is the first stage of digestion and if they are unable to do this properly it affects overall digestion and can cause complications such as choke or colic. It is important as your horse ages they have a dental check up every 6-12 months. Depending on the extent of dental issues their diets may have to be altered accordingly. Poor dentition may also cause them to eat at a slower rate, which reinforces the first point High worm burden - as horses age their immune function can decrease, meaning they may be more susceptible to a higher worm burden; which could be a reason for a drop in weight. It is important that you conduct a fecal egg count (FEC) to determine worm burden and to ensure you are worming with the correct anthelminitics Osteoarthritis or pain in the forelimbs or neck if your horse is in pain this may impact their appetite and how much they are grazing. Feeding them from a raised feeding bin rather than from a feeding bin on the ground (for both hay and supplementary feed) can assist, as this puts less pressure on their forelimbs. If they have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the neck also avoid using hay nets, as pulling feed from a hay net may cause pain. In more severe cases, in which a horse is not walking around grazing, they may have to be limited to a smaller paddock with easy access to water and a source of forage, along with supplementary feed supplied regularly throughout the day Decreased digestive function studies have shown that ageing horses may have decreased colon function (as a result of scaring from parasites or poor dentition) and therefore have lower crude protein, phosphorus and fibre digestion while the above 4 points are the main reasons for a loss of weight, it is important to consider a decrease in digestive function also. It is therefore important to consider the quality of ingredients and the processing method of the feed you are feeding to ensure the availability of required nutrients and assist with digestion. A feed that is a set recipe formulation that includes high quality proteins and extruded grains is ideal. Also ensure (as with any diet) that the Calcium to Phosphorus ratio is correct and do not supplement with excess Calcium as this can affect phosphorus absorption which may already be affected. Each horse is unique and this often becomes more obvious as our horses age particularly when a number of effects of ageing or concurrent diseases are present. They are therefore going to require differing diets and feed management depending on the severity of the above five points as well as the potential presence of underlying diseases. Despite differences one thing that all ageing horses still require is adequate fibre in their diet. Where possible it is highly recommended they have access to pasture, as grass is soft, requires less chewing and is easy to digest. Supplementary fibre sources are generally required if pasture is lacking or they are reluctant to graze. Supplementary feed is required if they are losing body condition. Here are a few diet recommendations based on the severity of dental problems (based on the diagnosis from your vet or equine dentist): If their teeth are still in fairly good condition a long-stem, high quality hay with a high leaf to stem ratio that is soft and easier to chew can still be fed to increase the amount of fibre in their diet if necessary. The addition of supplementary feed is going to be dependent on the amount of feed your horse requires to maintain weight. In the case of a horse that needs additional feed on top of their pasture and hay, the OldTimer is a great option. It contains extruded (cooked) grains which improves digestibility, allowing your horse to obtain the maximum amount of nutrients from their feed. It also contains the high quality proteins full fat soybean and lupins for improved crude protein levels in their diet. The extruded cubes are small to allow easy chewing and are rolled in molasses to encourage fussy eaters to eat. Old Timer product link - https://www.prydes.com.au/old-timer If their teeth are in a poorer state, long stem forage may have to be removed from their diet and other fibre sources such as chaff, soaked hay cubes, soaked sugar beet pulp and fibre based pellets introduced. In this case the EasiFibre is a great additional source of fibre and calories that can fed as pellets or soaked into a mash. Often horses with poor teeth also require a higher calorie supplementary feed, the OldTimer again is a great option, however, if they are missing teeth and really struggle to chew properly the EasiConditioner or BioMare cubes are extruded, high calorie and high protein feeds that can be easily soaked into a mash for easy consumption. An oil such as EasiOil is also a great source of additional calories that can be added without increasing the amount of feed that your ageing horse has to consume. In this case your horse may also benefit from multiple smaller meals throughout the day, rather than one or two larger meals in the morning and evening. EasiFibre - https://www.prydes.com.au/easifibre EasiConditioner - https://www.prydes.com.au/easiconditioner BioMare Cubes - https://www.prydes.com.au/biomare-cubes EasiOil - https://www.prydes.com.au/easioil & As horses age they are more prone to conditions such as PPID (Cushings Disease), Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) and laminitis. These three diseases while quite complex, are generally associated with a change in glucose and insulin regulation and they often co-exist within the horse. For example, a horse diagnosed by a veterinarian with EMS which is often associated with hyperinsulinemia (high insulin levels relative to glucose levels) and insulin resistance (high glucose and insulin levels) or PPID which is also often associated with insulin resistance, is more likely to suffer laminitis; which in these cases seems to be triggered by excess insulin. Fortunately, once diagnosed these conditions can be effectively managed through diet. In aged horses diagnosed with PPID or EMS, that are therefore more prone to developing laminitis it is important to feed them a diet with less than 12% starch and sugar to help prevent laminitis from occurring. Keep in mind the fibre requirements that we discussed above as horses with these conditions still require plenty of fibre in their diet, but they may need restricted access to pasture and supplementing with a low sugar hay instead. The addition of supplementary feed should take the form of a grain and grain by product free and low sugar feed such as the EasiSport, this can be combined with the EasiFibre or LupinPak (depending on the level of supplementary feed required) to provide adequate vitamins, minerals, protein and calories to your ageing horse. EasiSport - https://www.prydes.com.au/easisport LupinPak - https://www.prydes.com.au/lupinpak : Evaluate nutritional and husbandary management and make appropriate changes where necessary Ensure regular dental checkups Feed extruded grains and high quality protein Manage age related diseases such as PPID with appropriate nutrition and working alongside your veterinarian. If you have an older horse whos diet you would like to discuss with us, please dont hesistate to get in contact with team at Prydes - https://www.prydes.com.au/contact-us

The Video only needs to be about 1 minute long so that we can put them all together into one big video to showcase our skilled members. Feel Free to use your imagination!
