24.01.2022 A CRITICALLY ENDANGERED SPECIES BECOMES EVEN MORE ENDANGERED One of the Granite Belt's most threatened plants, the iconic black grevillea, has suffered severe loss as a result of recent water pipeline construction by a local farmer along a roadside in Thulimbah. Grevillea scotechinii subsp scortechinii, is endemic to the Granite Belt and survives in only a few highly fragmented sites on road and rail reserves and private properties. It is a beautiful sprawling shrub with holl...y-shaped leaves and black flowers and is quite unique to the region. Consortium members discovered the damage last week. One section of this Council road reserve has been completely cleared while there has been additional impacts along other parts of this, and adjoining. road reserves from pit construction and heavy machinery. We estimate in total something like 300 plants have been destroyed, or 20% of the existing population. The Southern Downs Regional Council have issued a stop work order on construction until further investigations can be undertaken. Due to its low and declining population numbers and a lack of protection in any conservation reserve, the Consortium prepared a very detailed nomination to the Department of Environment and Science last year to have its listing raised to endangered. As part of this nomination process, Consortium members carried out extensive surveys across the Granite Belt and determined that only about 1,500 plants remained, with the road where this recent destruction has taken place containing the highest numbers. On the basis of their assessment of the information contained in this nomination, the Queensland Species Technical Committee decided to list it as critically endangered and this was gazetted in August. This listing shows just how threatened it is and this recent destruction highlights what can happen to an endangered species if conservation legislation and proper processes are ignored. Both the State and Federal environmental agencies have been alerted to the destruction and we understand that compliance officers from the Department of Environment and Science are currently investigating the matter. Although it has been listed as a threatened species under both the State and Federal conservation legislation for more than 20 years, it has never had a recovery plan nor been the focus of a conservation program or regular monitoring. The Consortium is hoping that the government agencies will now take strong action to launch a prosecution and require remedial action so that the grevillea can be propagated, the damaged land rehabilitated and more secure locations found to protect this critically endangered species.
