17.01.2022 Straight from the Prime Minister's mouth - No change to JobKeeper until the end of September (when it was supposed to finish). Businesses will need to reassess their eligibility requirements after that period with possible reduced JobKeeper support until the end of March. Changes also to be made to JobSeeker to increase eligibility criteria.... Full details to be included in our next Newsletter. Stay tuned for more details.
16.01.2022 I first met Colin and Michelle French, the owners of Kinglake Forest Adventures, in 2004. Back then I think I was being sounded out by Michelle to join the local school council. Over the years the Frenchies have become both good friends and loyal clients to us and our firm. Their business, Kingake Forest Adventures, is both a rebranding and redevelopment of Kinglake Ranges Wilderness Camp, located in Kinglake West. The camp was completely destroyed in the 2009 Black Saturday ...Bushfires and through hard work, perseverance, good planning and just a little luck, was rebuilt in a couple of years to once again host school, sporting and corporate groups. A couple of years ago Col discussed an extension of their facilities to create an eco-adventure tourism facility that would open to the general public during school holidays and weekends, when the facilities would otherwise be unused. After even more hard work, perseverance, planning and good luck Stage 1 of the extension opened to the public on 1st July. It features their Treetop Experience, including swing bridges and flying fox way up high in the trees on their property. The photo below (featuring their newest employee, Nick Szetey) gives you but a small taste of whats in store. The Outdoor Rec Arena allows those not wanting to get up high to have a bit of fun on the ground with hackey sacks, Frisbees and slacklines. Theres also tasty locally produced food to warm you up on a cold Winters day. And coffee (dont forget the coffee!). Spring will see the opening of Stage 2 that will include mountain bike trails for beginners through to experienced. These school holidays provide a great opportunity to visit Kinglake Forest Adventures, to have a bit of fun, something to eat and drink and appreciate the outdoors. Their website is kinglakeforestadventures.com.au. Please take the time to have a look. They are open both this weekend and next weekend for the school holidays. If you cant get there over the holidays theyll be open every weekend thereafter. Businesses like Kinglake Forest Adventures are crucial for the development of rural communities like the Kinglake Ranges. They employ locals and use local businesses to develop and maintain their business. Col and Mich, congratulations on the development of such an innovative business as Kinglake Forest Adventures, and we look forward to seeing you provide enjoyment to thousands of people looking for a good time in the bush.

14.01.2022 One of the benefits of running your own practice is the opportunity of travelling to catch up with friends/clients in order to better understand their issues, their concerns, their goals, their priorities. In many ways, tax is just a side show. What are you wanting out of life?
12.01.2022 Due to the wonderful folk at SP Ausnet we will be without power on Wednesday. I am not sure why they think Kinglake West can do without power for a day, but there you go. Anyway, anyone wishing to contact us will need to wait until Thursday. Thanks.

02.01.2022 So, Bill Shorten announced a new policy for the Labor Party, and this one tackled what he (and I am sure the rest of the Labor Party) see as a significant crackdown on tax cheats. The essence of this policy is for the taxation of trusts, at a minimum rate of 30%. Now, having read the actual document released by the Labor Party on this (and there wasnt much) and the subsequent media commentary on this I have concluded the following: * Trusts arent well understood by either ...the media or by politicians. * A crackdown on the taxation of trusts has been mooted/announced/contemplated at various stages by pretty much all of the governments over the last 20 years. Not a great deal has subsequently happened. * Looking at the proposed changes, I am not sure any of our clients with trusts will be significantly impacted. * There is a lot of work required by the Labor Party to have this enacted as law, and anticipate that if a future Labor government does try get this through Parliament it will be in a heavily modified form resembling little of yesterdays announcement. * For the moment, trusts are still on the table when looking at business and investment structure options. Well be watching this space with interest.
