22.01.2022 9 things you didnt know about Australia So you think you know a little bit about this great big country that I now call home? Well Im about to tell you 9 things that you probably dont know. These 9 things may or may not be of any benefit to you, but I think youll find them interesting none the less. Before I moved to Australia I did a lot of research and I do mean a LOT of research. So much so that its possible that I know quite a few things that the most born and bred A...Continue reading

21.01.2022 Is Australia a racist country? I often read in newspapers that Australia is a racist country. I often hear people talking about it on TV as well. But thats not my experience, far from it in fact. Its also not been the experience of my friends of different nationalities from a variety of different cultures. In fact I would go so far as to say Australia is one of the least racist countries I have ever been to.... Now obviously I am not saying there are no racists in Australia, because there are, but thats true of almost any country Ive ever been to. And here in Australia racists are likely to be howled down rather than applauded. The racism that I have been told about, abuse that friends of mine have experienced, have often come from other immigrants, not from what you might class as born and bred Aussies and yet the media jump on such incidents as proof that all Aussies should be ashamed of themselves. Well I know who should be ashamed of themselves and its not your average Australian. Now I should point out that I am not talking about Australians attitudes towards or treatment of local indigenous people. I am not aboriginal and dont personally know any aboriginals. I am only talking about overseas immigrants to this country and even then, I am only talking about those that I have met and befriended. But that is quite a few people, who live in different cities across the country and who originate from a variety of countries. So I personally dont know why it is that so many people in the media make these statements. Its a shame because so many people read what they write, or listen to what the media says and then believe it to be the case. I frequently have Australians talking to me about how its a shame that the country is so racist. Most of them a shocked when I disagree with them. Many of them dismiss my arguments because I havent been in the country very long. Like that isnt racist. So if you are thinking about coming to Australia but are worried that yourself, or your family will be subjected to some form of racism or worse still racial hatred, then I can only tell you that, that hasnt been my experience. I cant guarantee you wont see an ugly side to Australia, but for every bad person here I feel there are hundreds, if not thousands of good ones.

14.01.2022 Is it expensive to live in Australia? Yes it is. There I could just leave it at that, but you probably want me to explain why I say that and perhaps that reasons why it is, so here goes.... The cost of things If you want to take your family of 4 to a game of AFL football (its actually quite a fun sport when you get used to it, which is hard because the rules are so confusing) expect to pay a minimum of $140. And thats sitting in the cheap seats. A loaf of bread in Australia will set you back anywhere from $2 - $4 depending on which city you buy it in. A meal at McDonalds for one person is around the $10 mark and fuel will cost you anywhere up to almost $1.65 per litre in most Australian cities. But is it worse than anywhere else? A lot of people have suggested to me that its simply a case of everything is expensive everywhere. And I look at those people and smile and say Get out of the country much?, because their statement isnt really true. Both Sydney and Melbourne consistently rank among the most expensive cities in the world. More expensive than even Tokyo and New York. For example power prices in Sydney are as much as 45% higher than they are in New York and a pair of Levi 501 jeans will cost you roughly $50 more over here than they would in the US. Why are things so expensive? In my opinion housing prices. Housing prices go up, wages therefore need to go up as well for people to afford these inflated prices. Higher wages mean that companies need to charge more for their goods and services and so the cost of living goes up. So should I avoid Australia? No, because wages are high. Cost of living is high but you can also make a lot of money. Your quality of life is great and its still possible to live a great lifestyle, close to the city whilst still managing to put some money away and get ahead. But it really does pay to do your homework and know the cost of things in advance. I have written an ebook on the cost of living in Australia. I recommend you buy it so you have a good idea of what things cost and how expensive things are to elsewhere in the world. You can get a copy of the book from this link here. www.star-migration.com.au
