25.01.2022 St Arnaud CFA is at the community fete on now at the St Arnaud Primary School. Come on down and join in the fun!

25.01.2022 Two CFA Volunteer Firefighters from the St Arnaud CFA Group were deployed this afternoon in the St Arnaud Slip-on vehicle to work night shift tonight at the Hepburn fire. Members will work along with other Slip-on Units and Ultra-Light Tankers from around our CFA District, as part of Strike Team 1605. We wish all crews a SAFE night.

25.01.2022 St. Arnaud Fire Brigade - Training Tomorrow, Sunday the 13th of January, the St. Arnaud Fire Brigade will be conducting some training exercises around the St. Arnaud Township from around 9:30am until 11:00am. There will be a number of CFA personnel and vehicles in the area. We will be undertaking scenarios based upon some of the civil infrastructure around town. You may see us gathered around discussing tactics or you may see us isolating and cordoning off areas. You may see ...us putting out water. You may see cars parked in odd places, simulating an accident of sorts. The main areas we will be operating in will be Napier Street, around Pioneer Park and the CFA running track on Dundas Street. However, we could be anywhere within a 1km radius of the St. Arnaud Fire Station. No matter where you see us, rest assured, there is nothing to be concerned about, were just training and keeping our skills up to date.

25.01.2022 On Saturday the 1st of September, St. Arnaud Volunteer Firefighter David Reynolds will again compete in the Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb. This will see him race up the 28 floors of Melbourne’s Crown Metropol Hotel (476 steps) wearing 25 kg of protective clothing and breathing apparatus whilst on air. The Stair Climb is both a fundraising and commemorative event. Funds raised go to Lifeline and The Black Dog Institute to improve support services, fund research, remove sti...gmas and raise awareness of mental health issues like depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and suicide, especially for those within the Emergency Service and Defence communities. This year we aim to raise over $700,000 which will assist Lifeline and The Black Dog Institute with their important work, said David. During the busy periods of Friday, Saturday and Sunday night, Lifeline receives so many calls that they need to employ part-time counsellors to bolster their volunteer workforce. Last year we raised enough money to pay for these vital part-time counsellors for an entire year in all of the 41 Lifeline call centres across Australia. The commemoration aspect of the event is never far from the competitors’ minds either. Each competitor runs in memory of one of the 343 firefighters who gave their life during the World Trade Centre attack on September 11, 2001. Before we climb we have a service where we remember CFA and MFB firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty, said David. This year David is also doing the climb in the memory of his cousin’s husband, another volunteer firefighter, who lost his life in January. If you see someone in firefighting kit walking the streets, don’t be alarmed. You get some strange stares training whilst in full firefighting kit, but knowing we can help lives being cut down way too early makes it all worthwhile, said David. People can donate to the Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb effort by going to www.firefighterclimb.org.au/climber/davidreynolds

24.01.2022 On Thursday evening, St. Arnaud Fire Brigade were requested to provide breathing apparatus (BA) support to this fire. Two St. Arnaud members were responded and spent a number of hours assisting in the blacking out duties. After a structure fire its not just a case of walking up to the structure and spraying water on it. Structure fires in particular produce many toxins and potentially dangerous gas by-products which can harm humans, therefore breathing apparatus needs to be... used, even when mopping up. Each BA crew also had with them a thermal imaging camera which assisted in detecting hot spots in the structure and surrounds. St. Arnaud Fire Brigade were glad to assist Ararat in this task.

21.01.2022 The St Arnaud CFA Group Headquarters is manned today due to the extreme fire danger in our area. Volunteers are on standby to respond to support our community as required. Pictured is the CFA St Arnaud Group Bulk Water Tanker that is stationed at the St Arnaud Fire Station today.

20.01.2022 Did you happen to see all the St. Arnaud CFA Fire Brigade vehicles at Goldfield's Reservoir down Lock Road this morning? Did you wonder what was going on? The St. Arnaud Fire Brigade were having a training session focusing on pump operations, more specifically drafting. Drafting is the process of using a static water supply, like a dam, to fill the truck. When we are on the fire-ground this is an essential skill as water needs to be obtained from any available source. While a... hydrant would be handy they're hard to come by in the bush or the middle of a paddock! If you ever see us somewhere on a Sunday morning, training, feel free to pull up, have a look and a chat.

20.01.2022 The Fire Danger Period (FDP) will begin 1am, Monday 30 November 2020 for the Northern Grampians Shire Council. Make sure you know what you can and can't do during the Fire Danger Period this summer season. Visit www.cfa.vic.gov.au/can

20.01.2022 TOTAL FIRE BAN TODAY, 18/1/18 AND TOMORROW 19/1/18. A reminder that St. Arnuad is in the Wimmera fire weather district.

19.01.2022 Why You Should NEVER Use Water to Extinguish a Grease/Oil Fire Oil/Grease and water do not mix well. Never pour water on an oil / grease fire. Below is a "Slow Mo Guys" video which is an example of what can happen when water is poured onto a grease/ oil fire.

19.01.2022 Today the St. Arnaud Fire Brigade undertook training on map reading, navigation and use of radios. We had four vehicles out and about town navigating to checkpoints. Once each point was found a specific radio message had to be sent through to our communications room. Did you see us out and about? Even in this day and age of Google Maps and GPS navigation, map reading is still an essential skill for all firefighters to have (especially in areas where mobile phone access is lim...ited). The exercise also highlighted how beneficial local knowledge is to crews. Test your local knowledge by picking the location of some of the checkpoints from the attached photos. Warning, some of the pictures don't give a lot of information!

16.01.2022 False alarm prompts burn off warning The St Arnaud Fire Brigade is urging the community to take extra care when burning off and register their burn with CFA on 1800 668 511. On Tuesday evening CFA brigades from St Arnaud, Gre Gre Village and Beazley’s Brigade were called out to an unregistered burn off, needlessly tying up CFA resources.... There are a few simple steps landowners must take when burning off: Be aware of your council burn off by-laws Register the burn with CFA on 1800 668 511 Check weather conditions Tell their neighbours when they plan to burn off to avoid brigades being called out unnecessarily by a neighbour or passer by Never leave a burn off unattended Registering your burn-off is important as it means CFA volunteer firefighters are not called out unnecessarily when someone reports smoke.

16.01.2022 Temperatures are set to soar in many areas of Victoria over coming days and with that comes increased fire risk. Don’t forget to consult the VFF/ CFA (Country Fire Authority) voluntary grain harvest guide to ensure it is safe to harvest where you arehttps://bit.ly/3lalYOr

08.01.2022 EXTREME FIRE DANGER PREDICTED THIS SATURDAY With the forecast for Saturday 6th January 2018 being very hot and windy, we have estimates that our District will be in the EXTREME Fire Danger Rating. With this in mind, now is the time for preparing your family, pets, farm and home and ensure you have a plan in the event that there is a fire near you.... A few key points to consider over the coming days: Having a plan is one thing, but make sure ALL of your family knows it and sticks to it. Make sure your plan covers all scenarios - what if the car doesn't start, what if the wind changes direction or the roads are blocked? If you are planning to travel, make sure you have adequate water, a well stocked first aid kit and woolen blankets with you, but most importantly, be aware in your surroundings and stay tuned to the ABC radio for regular weather updates and information as you may not always have phone reception Make sure you have the Vic Emergency app downloaded on your phone and understand the three levels of warnings Be aware of your activities, and how they could contribute to starting a fire. Angle Grinders, slashers and lawn mowers are examples of equipment that can easily spark a fire on hot and windy days in nearby dry grass. Additional information on preparing your home and family over the next few days can be found at: http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/pla/how-to-prepare-your-property/ http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare/pets-and-bushfires/ Additional key information and updates can be found at >> www.emergency.vic.gov.au http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/ By taking time to carry out a few simple steps, we can help minimise the risks and hopefully get through the hot days ahead without any fires.

07.01.2022 Aircraft play a number of important part in fire suppression. They can hit a fire fast and hard and can often significantly slow or stop a fire’s spread. But have you ever wondered how the aircraft seem to get on scene so quickly? There are a number of aircraft and crew based at the Stawell Airport and they are on pre-determined dispatch.... This means that when a fire call comes in for local Brigades the aircraft are also paged at the same time. If the call out meets certain, pre-determined, criteria the aircraft are dispatched within minutes of the call. Quite often they are on scene early in the initial attack. The yellow and blue aircraft that you often see at local fires are the Air Tractor 802Fs based at Stawell. Carrying around 3500 litres of water, foam, gel or fire retardant each they’re of great assistance and effective when working with ground attack crews.

07.01.2022 Tonight the St. Arnaud Fire Brigade will be conducting some training around the Lord Nelson Park area from around 6:30pm to 7:30pm. There will be a number of CFA vehicles in the area but rest assured, there is nothing to be concerned about. We are just going about the process of keeping our skills up to scratch. There will be a couple of small training props set up in the area also. These will be labelled with signage indicating they are there for training.

06.01.2022 Fire Danger Period commencing in Northern Grampians Shire The Fire Danger Period has been declared for the Northern Grampians Shire Council, to commence at 0100 hours on 29 October 2018 and will remain in place until 1 May 2019 unless stated otherwise. The commencement of the Fire Danger Period is determined on local existing and predicted conditions that lead to increased fire risk for your locality.... This means you cannot light a fire in the open air unless you have a permit or comply with certain requirements. If you don’t obtain a permit, you could be breaking the law and may be prosecuted. Penalties may include a fine up to $19,342 and/or up to 12 months' imprisonment. 02.01.2022 HAZARDOUS MATERIAL APPLIANCE VISITS ST. ARNAUD Members of the St Arnaud CFA received a special visit today (Sunday 16 Feb) from the specialist HAZMAT (hazardous material) vehicle from the Ballarat suburb Lucas. The HAZMAT vehicle can support a response to chemical, biological and radiological incidents in the region and beyond.... Incidents may range from asbestos decontamination, hazardous chemical incidents and atmospheric monitoring. The HAZMAT gives us extra resources so our volunteers within the St Arnaud CFA Group can call on specialist equipment to ensure the community is well protected during incidents like gas leaks, and chemical spills. Features of the truck include detection equipment used to monitor a variety of chemicals, oxygen levels, lower explosive limits, carbon monoxide levels and radioactive materials. The HAZMAT can set up emergency and public decontamination sites for a range of incidents, with decontamination showers and inflatable tents resourced to clear people of any contaminants.
