24.01.2022 Today we share a little story about our family roots. For those of you who think we cant spell, this will explain how the name Starrs with 2 Rs and an S fits in. The Mason family have farmed along the Murray for many generations, One of those generations included Des and Laura Mason (ne Starrs) who as newlyweds took over the Starrs dairy farm at Jervois in the 1940s when milking cows was long days of back breaking work. Leo and May Starrs (Lauras parents) came to Jervois from a drought stricken Murrayville through a post World War I Soldier Settlement Scheme and so the story begins....

24.01.2022 Our family is proud to be a founding member of the Yatco Wetland Landcare Group whose countless hours of hard work at Yatco Lagoon are making these Black Swans feel right at home. Black Swan breeding events are culturally significant along the Murray River as an indicator of a balanced ecosystem. The swans will only lay eggs when there is a good place to lay them = healthy abundant vegetation, plenty of food = healthy abundant vegetation and this only happens when there is adequate river flows. Its been a tough few years on the Murray but if the swans are laying maybe we are on the right track. Happy Landcare Week all you tree planters, this is why you do what you do

23.01.2022 Caught my favourite beneficial bug working overtime in my roses which tells me they are busy doing their stuff in the vineyard. What you can see to the left is a Lace Wing larvae who has been feasting on aphids, he throws the dead aphids on his back as a clever disguise which gives him the nickname junk bug. No need to spray my roses!! Look after those Lady Birds and Lace Wings, they can do this job on their own without much help from us, just squirt the aphids off the new shoots with a hose every few days and nature will do the rest #riverlandwine #yatcoviti #vinescout #fruitdoctors #biologicalservices

15.01.2022 Looking forward to starting our EcoVineyards project. We will be reinvigorating an old river red gum tree line along a flood runner creek with locally occurring under storey and ground cover species adjacent to a young planting of Sauvignon Blanc. We aim to blur the boundary between the vineyard and native ecosystem by adding flowering ground cover species under vine to build a native insectary and suppress weeds - friends with benefits!!

07.01.2022 Its not hard to see why the generation of solar energy is a winner in the Riverland. January 2020 was the third hottest January on record in Australia. Being able to use solar energy to run our irrigation pumps means that we produced 16.6 MWh of power and used 14.8 MWh = 1.8 MWh being exported back to the grid and savings for us.
