12.01.2022 This #TBT, we were thrilled to get this photo of Patrol 52 Ralph Ling on the day he retired in 1982. His son Rick shared his story: Ralph Ling was employed by... the RACV about 1960 when the depot was in St Kilda, thats the part I remember near Luna Park, as a kid. I loved my visits there, watching the women in the phone room, writing the jobs on cards and sending them down a type of conveyor belt to the radio room. My dads first van was a used FC Holden with a Bakelite house-type phone, mounted behind the seat. He worked mainly afternoon shifts, 4pm- midnight and some night shifts when he had to sleep at the St Kilda depot. RACV updated the vans when a new model Holden was released. FB EH HD HR are the models I remember. Dad also drove a Mini van, Corolla van (which I still own) and finished with a Ford Escort (in the photo). Ralph Ling retired at 54 years of age, his patrol number had changed to 152. He went on, with my help, to start CAR Compressors Automotive. He is still living at the house he built in Black Rock, now aged 90 years young this November. See more
