25.01.2022 In what seems like pretty much overnight, accountants and bookkeepers have become an extension arm of Centrelink! The Government has effectively passed on their administrative burden to us accountants and our clients. Every accountant in the country is thinking, we never signed up for this. And we certainly are not being paid to act like a Government department and most definitely not getting any work life balance right now.... And what makes it even more challenging is that we are also expected to interpret legislation and rules that seem to change literally on a daily basis. On a good note, we have been able to help many clients and it makes us happy when we are able to get a good result. But we've had little sleep over the last month and we just ask for a little patience as there is much for us to do and not much time. Please be kind to your accountant, we are trying our best. Happy Friday everybody!

24.01.2022 The ATO is giving me a break!

19.01.2022 In order to do your 2020 tax return you will need your FY2020 Income Statement (previously known as the Payment Summary) or in the good old days, it used to be called the Group Certificate! How you get your end of financial year information from your employer depends on how your employer reports your income to the ATO. You will be provided with either: - an income statement - if your employer reports your income, tax and super information to the ATO through Single Touch Payro...ll (STP). This information will be made available to you through ATO online services via myGov and finalised by 31 July, or - a payment summary - if your employer is not yet reporting through STP, they will continue to provide you with a payment summary by 14 July. Please ask your employer and have the above information ready when coming to your appointment to do your tax return.

16.01.2022 Attention all employers receiving JobKeeper You might have missed the updated Jobkeeper 1.0 rules which state that you need to offer jobkeeper to any newly eligible employees from 1 July 2019. There are 5 categories where this may apply:... 1. Any new employees as at 1 July 2020 that were not employed as at 1 March 2020 [full-time, part-time or fixed-term employees]. 2. Any long-term casual employees that meet the 12month test between 1 March 2020 and 1 July 2020 [still also need to be employed on a regular and systematic basis and not a permanent employee of any other employer]. 3. Any employees that turned 18 years of age between 1 March 2020 and 1 July 2020 [if employees were 16 or 17 they can also still qualify if considered ‘independent’ or not undertaking full time study]. 4. Any employees who became an Australian resident under the Social Security Act definition between 1 March 2020 and 1 July 2020. 5. Any employees who between 1 March 2020 and 1 July 2020 became an Australian resident for income tax purposes that also holds a Subclass 444 [Special Category] visa. Please review if any of your employees fit in any of the above categories and make sure they complete and sign the new form available on the ATO website here: https://www.ato.gov.au//JobKeeper-payment---employee-nomi/ You need to make sure to pay the minimum required payment of $1500 per fortnight from Fortnight 10 being from 3 August 2020. Contact us is you need any assistance.

09.01.2022 In amongst all the regular breaking news, we thought it would be helpful to outline some of the steps that are required to bring into reality all the promises being made: Step 1: Government makes big announcement. Step 2: Draft bill needs to be drafted by lawmakers. Step 3: Bill needs to be passed though Parliament and enacted as Law.... Step 4: Copy of Explanatory Memorandum is then released to the public. Step 5: As your accountant we study the details and ensure that you are able to qualify. Step 6: We take the necessary steps via the tax system to implement the measures. This includes on-time lodgement of all your compliance requirements. For now, the best thing you can do is register your interest...and just wait until we find out more! A little bit of patience goes a long way. We expect the picture to be clearer this time next week.
