18.01.2022 This month we’re focusing on mental health awareness and wellbeing with links to our collections and eresources. Today we look at mindfulness. Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine describes mindfulness as the innate human ability to be fully aware of the present moment, without distractions, judgment, over-reaction, or feeling overwhelmed. This state of mind can be cultivated using traditional meditative practices or by observing short pauses throughout the day. Mindfulness techniques are often used to reduce stress and improve wellbeing. To learn more about mindfulness, try the Gale Health and Wellness database, a reliable health information source, providing overviews, short videos and academic articles http://ow.ly/Xrml50BDXAB To see a range of ebooks and books on mindfulness try this search http://ow.ly/HnP450BDXAC

14.01.2022 Reading with young children is one of the best things you can do to help them build their early literacy and get them ready for future learning. It's never too early to start - you can read to children right from birth! Don't worry if kids don't want to read all the way to the end, when you share stories and chat together about them your child is still getting the benefits of this special time. If your child wants to read the same book over and over again that's great!... Repetition helps them to learn. Birrell was responsible for some of Queensland's best known buildings from the 1950s onward. His work includes the innovative car park on Wickham Terrace in Brisbane's CBD, the old Toowong Library, the J.D. Story Administration Building at the University of Queensland and the Centenary Pool Complex at Spring Hill. This 2019 blog story highlights his work and provides an overview to his collections held at State Library. http://ow.ly/ONPs50BJ5k1
