Of course we continue to add to our collections all the time. https://guides.slsa.sa.gov.au/Aboriginal_peop/Aboriginal_SA National NAIDOC

20.01.2022 SA Power Networks did such a great job putting up the Christmas tree. We can't thank them enough. Watch carefully for library staff getting the displays ready - all with their feet on the ground :-) #christmasatthemortlock

19.01.2022 The State Library was delighted to receive yesterday’s State Budget announcement of $86.5 million for a new, world class warehouse facility for the arts and cultural institution collections of South Australia. Knowing that such precious collections will have a home worthy of their safekeeping will give confidence that the future of our South Australian stories are in safe hands. 15.01.2022 Sometime life presents us with just the right bit of information. While looking for audio for episode three of our 'Strenuous Work' podcasts, our audio engineer found this interview with Ellinor Walker speaking of her experience of lock-down during the 1919 Influenza Pandemic. While on holiday in Tasmania, the South Australian government of the day closed the borders to stop the spread of the disease. It took her ships, trains, contact-tracing and quarantine to get back home ...to Adelaide. Listen and find out more about Ellinor at: https://digital.collections.slsa.sa.gov.au/nodes/view/7693

14.01.2022 Even though our buildings are closed you can still contact us. CHAT WITH A LIBRARIAN Use our live chat service to get real-time assistance from a librarian by clicking on the yellow chat tab at the bottom right of our website And our Ask us service is still open... We aim to respond to complex queries in 7 to 10 working days but please be aware that due to our inability to access onsite collections, and the high volume of enquiries being received at this time, we may not always be able to meet this time frame. https://askslsa.altarama.com/reft100.aspx?key=AskUs Photo: Neighbours chatting c1929

13.01.2022 In honour of Remembrance Day. This embroidered postcard, dated July (1916), was sent home from France by Private Alfred Duncan to his beloved mother Emily in Adelaide. He writes 'I hope there are better days coming'. Alf was wounded in action at Dernancourt on 5 April 1918 and later died of his wounds. More items from the Duncan archive here: https://digital.collections.slsa.sa.gov.au//q:AXB/source:2... Lest we forget #RemembranceDay

12.01.2022 After a bit of a glitch (you know what I'm talking about) we can now open 'Behind the Lines' showing the best political cartoons of 2019. The exhibition features 87 political cartoons and is presented by the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House In the State Library Gallery. 12.01.2022 To say that life in SA has been full of ups and downs lately is a bit of an understatement. Remember you can still add your COVID related photos/videos/stories to 'Remember my story' at: https://digital.collections.slsa.sa.gov.au/pages/covid-19 This rather topical photo was taken, and added to the site, by Jenny Scott.

12.01.2022 This beguiling church and nativity pop-up book scene, complete with cellophane stained-glass windows, is also on display as part of our #ChristmasattheMortlock Designed by Czech paper artist Vojtch Kubašta (19141992), one of the most prolific and inventive paper engineers in the history of children’s pop-up books. Each year he created a new pop-up Christmas scene for greeting cards, table toppers and advent calendars often featuring the snow-covered Church scenes of his own fond Christmas memories. His designs were handcrafted by teams of women whom Kubašta said moved with the synchronicity of an orchestra at the factory table.

08.01.2022 The Brewery Christmas display may be off this year but do you remember when Father Christmas's sleigh was a 'speedboat' and when the cow swam over the moon? Photos from Nov 8, 2005 - Mark

07.01.2022 It's an absolute pleasure to be part of 'On the Terrace' this Sunday, 15th November. A full day of free performances by the best of SA's chamber music talents across five North Tce institutions including in the beautiful Mortlock Chamber of the State Library. More details about times etc http://www.chambermusicadelaide.com.au/ Chamber Music Adelaide

07.01.2022 Christmas at the Mortlock This year the magic of Christmas comes to the Mortlock, one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. There is something for everyone to see and discover, from the largest indoor Christmas tree in Adelaide, to fascinating and fun displays of all things Christmas from the Library’s collections. In a year of change, challenges and champions, 2020 has been tough for all. Together with the support of SA Power Networks we are bringing a little Christ...mas cheer by lighting up the tree in the majestic Mortlock. Why not come in and take a selfie in front of the tree and send it to loved ones who you may not be able to visit this Christmas. Our Christmas displays show how South Australians celebrated Christmas through the generations. See photographs from decades of our much-loved Christmas Pageant, cards, including one from Don Bradman, menus from Christmas dinners aboard ships, postcards sent home to family and friends by WWI soldiers, and more. Hear the sounds of Christmas music including songs by Patsy Biscoe. There are also beautiful books and toys from our Children’s Literature Research Collection on display. Open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm until 4 January, and free to all. Photo: Toby Woolley #ChristmasattheMortlock

02.01.2022 With the latest news about the SA lockdown, we are just going to have a quiet sit for a little while. We will update as soon as we can.
