17.01.2022 It is important that Australian creative voices be heard. Part of State Opera's mission is to produce something that is Australian and has an Australian voice. In 2020 we decided to elevate a new production of Summer of the Seventeenth Doll to the mainstage. The opera is, in turn, haunting, funny, nostalgic, tragic, elegiac, and familiar. And, like all great art, it provides a mirror to our times. The perfect vehicle to illustrate State Operas commitment to telling the Australian story, in words and music of our own time and place. 07.01.2022 In light of the ongoing risks posed by COVID-19 and the impact of restrictions on the live performance sector, State Opera wishes to advise that the productions of Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Macbeth have been postponed until 2021. The health, safety and wellbeing of our audiences, artists, and orchestras remain the highest priority. Such considerations, combined with the considerable logistics required to stage large operas, mean that we have had to make the difficult decision to postpone these productions until 2021 when we hope that the world is a safer place. - Executive Director Yarmila Alfonzetti. 04.01.2022 My State Opera favourite moment was performing the title role in Puccinis Madama Butterfly. It is an Everest of a role and truly a test of mental, physical, and vocal stamina. I was surrounded by wonderful colleagues both on and off stage, and together, we created something very special. It was one of the most harmonious (no pun intended!) productions I have ever been a part of. I treasure every single memory from the very first rehearsal to the standing ovation at the end of the sold-out final performance. Most of all, it marked my change from ensemble performer to State Opera principal artist and I will be forever grateful to have been given that opportunity from a company that I have grown up with and hold very dear in my heart. - Joanna McWaters - Lyric Soprano

02.01.2022 Love seeing these sketches from the Adelaide Festival Centre performing arts collection from our 1988 performances of 'The Fiery Angel' Costume and set designed by Ken Wilby and Mark Thompson. The costumes for The Fiery Angel were inspired by an eclectic mix of historical references from the medieval age through to Weimar Germany. The final designs were constructed of a large variety of non-traditional materials including: industrial belting, car upholstery vinyls and m...ats, industrial rubbers, large open weave air conditioning filter nets, [and] quilted sound deadening mats. Anything that could be used to visually deconstruct a traditional period costume. For example, all of the ladies chorus nuns costumes were made from industrial grade black builders plastic. The type used to act as a waterproof membrane under new concrete and certainly not at all fireproof. See more
