25.01.2022 Sunday 7th November marked the start of the First Nations celebrations of NAIDOC week for 2020 with this year’s theme Always Was, Always Will Be. The theme recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years whilst being spiritually and culturally connected to this country. We know the power of education shapes change and we know meaningful change starts with our youngest minds. Engaging our youth and sharing the rich histor...y of Indigenous Australians, our traditions and our stories, inspires and informs. At Monday morning assembly we had the honour and privilege of hosting Mr Linc Walker present a Welcome to Country/Bubu for St Augustine’s school children and staff to and then performed a smoking ceremony. Sarah Hughes presented the Acknowledgement of Kuku Yalanji country, seas and waterways. Our Yr. 6 Indigenous leaders Leeben Adams and Harry Hughes were joined Jehkiel Cobb, Jonty Baldwin, Billy-Jean Adams, and Francesca Hughs in raising the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Australian flags followed by a minute silence. Leeben and Harry represented the school and their respected families by participating in the Mossman Community Flag Raising Ceremony held at the Douglas Shire Council. Thank you to all the students involved and Happy NAIDOC Week. Kind regards Julie Salam St Augustine’s ILO See more

24.01.2022 What’s your very best idea for our school? Parents of students at Catholic schools in the Cairns Diocese have been sent an email from CES Executive Director Bill Dixon, asking them to complete a short survey identifying their priorities and ideas for our schools over the next four years. The link to the survey was provided in the email. A key question asks parents: If there is one thing that we could do in the next four years that would make a significant positive difference ...for their children’s education, what would it be? We’d like as many parents as possible to respond to the survey to ensure the voice of our families is heard. Please check your emails to access the survey

23.01.2022 Students from Prep to Year 2 had a hands on experience from our annual Fire Education experience last Friday. Students learnt important safety messages such as Stop Drop and Roll, Get Out and Stay Out and Get Down Low and Go Go Go! They also enjoyed getting to have a turn spraying the fire hose. Thank you to Daniel Favier (Sienna's from Prep - Dad) & Mick who facilitated the education to our school.

23.01.2022 I was very proud of our Saints' students displaying great respect this morning at our Remembrance Day commemoration. The children were able to gain a deeper understanding of the courage and loyalty the men and women of the Army, Navy and Air Force possessed during World Wars 1 & 2, Korea, Vietnam and Afghanistan. Their service to our nation is honoured and never forgotten. Lest We Forget

22.01.2022 St Augustine's School enjoyed a Father's Day morning with games and school assembly. Many dads enjoyed interacting with their sons and daughters before school. The highlight was a good old fashioned egg and spoon race. There were many smiles and laughter as the various teams lost track of what leg they were on and who was leading. In the end everyone was declared a winner. Happy Father's Day to all dads and men who play a significant role in the life of their children

21.01.2022 Students were involved in a World of Maths at the St Augustine's Maths Enrichment Day. With over 15 interactive colourful maths stations students were challenged to use problem solving skills to explore a variety of scenarios requiring mathematical skills and team work. Activities presented were age and stage appropriate for junior primary and upper primary students. Students enjoyed their sessions as evidenced by the high degree of engagement, conversations and laughter. Saints will continue to provide these enrichment opportunities in future years.

21.01.2022 2021 "Drop n' Go Zone" Information It is with great excitement the school can confirm the "Drop n' Go Zone" will be commencing from Day 1, 27th Jan 2021. Signs will be erected on Jack Street over the holidays.... Cars will not be able to park in this zone on Jack Street between the morning hours of 8.00am - 9:30am and the afternoon hours of 2pm - 3.30pm. Although the Drop n' Go will be available at this stage the legal advice is students in Prep and Yr 1 need to be collected by a parent / responsible adult from the Undercover Area or another designated area as communicated by the school. Cars will be permitted to stop in this zone for a period of 2 minutes to facilitate student movement in or out of the vehicle. If the drop off cannot occur in this time the parent will be required to drive around the block so efficient car movements can occur. The Bus Zone will continue to exist on Grogan Street. Students who walk to and from school may enter and depart from any entrance. Children collected by parents may depart from any entrance. A Disabled Car Park will be created at the front of the school at the main entrance pathway. Please pass this information to all friends and other parents in your network so all in the school community are aware of this upcoming improvement to school routines. Regards Mr Rayner

20.01.2022 St Augustine's School - Mossman had a full week of learning and experiences to engage in Child Protection Week. Recognising child protection isn't restricted to stranger danger, the school had a variety of guest speakers who gave talks in areas of life where protection from danger is necessary. An example was the visit on Monday from Ergon Energy representatives who spoke about the uses and dangers of electricity and ways to protect each other from electrical danger. On Mond...ay evening CES officially launched National Child Protection Week with a presentation of awards to students who were successful in designing logos for shirts to be worn by staff who will act as Student Protection Contacts within schools across the diocese in 2021. Year 5 students, Ally Pringle and Georgia Hughes represented St Augustine's at this event. On Tuesday students participated in a Fire Drill so as to have a reminder of ways to stay protected should a fire take hold within school Thursday St Augustine's participated in RUOK? Day. This was a great way to build community as we reminded ourselves to 'check in' with others- family, friends and colleagues. This day allowed us to live out our Mercy Values of Respect, Justice, Courage, Compassion, Hospitality and Service just as Jesus calls us to do. All children were handed bright yellow wristbands to wear all day to help remind them to ask a fellow Saint's community member (classmate, teacher, school officer, parents, guardians and friends) if they were ok! This helps to protect children from social and emotional danger. Staff celebrated with a shared morning tea, surprising each other by hand delivering a personalised cupcake and asking the question RUOK? Although this is only recognised formally on one day each year, we encourage our Saint's community to continue the conversations and open doors allowing us to connect and build positive relationships with each other. The week concluded with the annual "Walk Safely to School Day". Students and parents met at one of three locations and together made their way to the school campus. This activity reminded us all about the need to have rules in place so we can be protected from the dangers of traffic when making our way to and from school. Student Protection Week has been a busy and educational week. Together we have been reminded about a variety ways to stay safe and protected from dangers existing in day to day life. When we look out for each other we can all feel safe and protected from harm. See more

13.01.2022 St Augustine’s School, Mossman 1934 The original St Augustine’s School, consisting of two rooms and housing 70 children, church and convent buildings were opened in 1934 under the care of four Sisters of Mercy. Due to the wet season, the school and convent were not completed on time so classes were initially held under the Presbytery where the Sisters lived. A distinctive feature of St Augustine’s has been the quality of renovation and refurbishment of these original buildings. They are currently being used as classrooms, administration block, staffroom and Parish Centre #CEW2020 #175Years

St. Augustine's wo...uld like to acknowledge and thank Vic's Nursery for the extremely kind donation of plants, and Targa Jenkins for the chair covers that made the event look even more amazing and special. 01.01.2022 Last Friday evening, Saints students were invited to participate in the St Vincent de Paul Virtual Sleep Out. The purpose was to raise awareness that many young people are homeless and do not have a comfortable and safe place to sleep each night. One of our Saints' families had a discussion about homelessness. The children decided to couch surf which is another form of homelessness which many kids experience. They understood that couch surfing is defined as staying temporarily in different homes - typically making use of any type of sleeping arrangement. This form of homelessness sometimes can be very unsafe as it leaves the young person vulnerable to assaults and other forms of violence. 116 000 Australians experience homelessness each night.
