23.01.2022 SOAP FACTORY Monsieur Jean Baptiste Gravier conducted a successful Soapworks factory for many years in the Coopers Flat area (now D'Arcy Street, Stawell). Mo...nsieur Gravier was born in Villar, Colmars, in the Basses Alpes Region of France in September 1826 where his father was the Mayor. He arrived in Australia in 1854 and went first to the gold diggings at Castlemaine where he was in luck and amassed a fortune of 14,000. He moved from Castlemaine to Ararat for a short time before moving to Stawell in 1880 to set up his soap making business. His products included soap, candles, vinegar and essences which were available in many retail stores in most parts of the country and by 1888 he was manufacturing 75 tons of soap per annum! His business was one of those industries that had been created by the aid of Stawell's good water supply. He married Annie in 1856 and he died in Stawell in August 1910. Both Jean and his wife Annie are buried in the same grave, along with their daughter Leonie in the Stawell Cemetery.

17.01.2022 SNOW FALL IN STAWELL We have been posting articles on the history of Stawell and District for over five years and we thank Irene for her recent request for phot...os of a very wintery Stawell. Our records indicate that since 1900 there have been four major snowfalls, the last one being in 1981. Other major snowfalls occurred in 1901,1947 and 1949. There have been light snowfalls in other years but not heavy enough to stop on the ground long enough before melting. If any of our Facebook followers have a request for a story or a photo from our collection, please get in touch.

16.01.2022 Another wonderful silo in the area to check out. Stunning!

07.01.2022 Disappointing. Hoping the 139th next year will be bigger and better than ever before!

07.01.2022 Wow - it would be this week that our wonderful team of volunteers would be hard at it, setting up for the 2020 Stawell Winter Woollies Festival. So sad it's no...t going to happen. The Committee haven't made any final decision as to whether to hold the festival later in the year. All is still too unknown! Keep any eye out though Adding a few lovely photos from previous festivals - just to keep you interested See more
