10.01.2022 A week ago, we had one of our worst weekends ever. I arrived home with an injured koala that I had just rescued, and Helen came out to meet me. On her way, she ...heard a gate banging in the wind and went to investigate. She found that the gate to our kangaroo enclosure was unlatched. Helen raced in to find that all but one of our kangaroos were gone, including Big Al. Our volunteer hadnt latched the gate properly. It was panic stations. We raced around everywhere but couldnt see any sign of any of our missing kangaroos. 14 kangaroos were missing. Most were close to release and we werent overly worried about them, but some needed further treatment and 3 were ready to take back to their homes and then of course there was Big Al. We felt sick. We searched and searched, day and night, and barely slept. We had many friends join us to help with the search. After 3 days, 5 of our joeys returned home, including one that we were very worried about. But there wasnt any sign of Big Al. On the upside, Big Als wound was fine. We had stopped treating it and while he was still bandaged, the bandages would come off and we were almost ready to leave the wound open anyway. But Big Al had a home to go to, and many loving residents that were excited about his return. A day later, the heavens opened up and we experienced very heavy rains. Our enclosure doors were left open to allow our escapees to return to their shelter shed and feed bins should they choose. At around 10:30PM, I checked the enclosure to do a head count and discovered 8 very soggy joeys. They were standing in the pouring rain which was strange given that they had come home for protection and food. I shone my torch over to the shed and the reason was immediately obvious there was a great bulk of a kangaroo blocking the doorway and devouring the food. Big Al was back. But now Big Al had tasted freedom, and he liked it! He was not happy about being locked up again and became very agitated and attempted to break out. Given the excellent condition of his wound, we decided that the best choice was to get Big Al home. And thats what we did the very next morning. Besides it was only a little 2 hour detour to add to my 6 hour drive to the firegrounds. We left a bandage on to protect the last stage of healing, which will either fall off or we will visit him in a week or so to remove it. What a journey. What an outcome. What a wonderful feeling. And what a wonderful bunch of residents that appreciate how special their magnificent Big Al / Scarface truly is.

10.01.2022 Hi all, we are finally open. Thank you all for being patient with us during the renovation. A big thank you to all the wonderful volunteer and Work for the Dole people who worked so hard helping us put it all back together. Give us a bit of time to settle in and we will be back with more bargain grabbing sales. Again a heartfelt thank you that worked during the break.
09.01.2022 This is our last day for 6 weeks, then like the rest of Melbourne we will go into lockdown. During lockdown we will NOT be accepting donations. Please don't leave them out on the doorstep, they are a trip risk to our passing elderly, also there is no staff or volunteers here to clear them. When we return it will be a week on and a week off routine with donations. This will give us time to process them all correctly. We will let you know at commencement of opening. We would like to thank everyone who came and visited during the past 3 weeks. Thank you for all your postive feedback regarding our changes. See you on the other side.

05.01.2022 Hi all. Yet again we have had to delay opening. New date is Tuesday 28th January. We really have been swamped with donations (which we are very grateful for).... We clear a space, it quickly gets filled. Is it possible to hold off your donations for the rest of this week so we can catch up. Also thought you would like to know last year 2019, we sent 2.2 tonnes of clothing to the ragman. Yes 2.2 tonnes. The ragman has several destinations 1. Shelters for victims of domestic violence 2. Refugee shelters 3. Homeless shelters 4. Overseas to Refugee Camps 5. Rag bags. I hope this has informative for you gives you peace of mind that we try very hard to recycle as much as we can and your donations find a good home. We look forward to seeing you next week. (Really this time) See more
