23.01.2022 Today is the feast of St Agapitus of Palestrina, Martyr! Agapitus was only fifteen years old but already his heart was all aglow with the desire to die as a martyr. Upon orders from the Emperor Aurelian (ca. 257), he was mercilessly whipped with leaded scourges, then thrown into a vile basement to remain there four days without food. After further punishment under the lash, he was suspended head downwards over a smoldering fire so that he should die from the smoke; boiling water was dashed against him, and his jaws were battered. When wild beasts hesitated to harm him, he was beheaded with the sword. St Agapitus of Palestrina, Martyr, pray for us
23.01.2022 Today is the feast of Our Lady of Czestochowa! The image of Our Lady of Czestochowa, also known as the Black Madonna, was traditionally believed to have been painted by St. Luke the Evangelist on a cypress wood panel from a table used by the Holy Family in Nazareth. It was said to have been brought from Jerusalem by St. Helen and was enshrined in Constantinople for 500 years. It was given to a Greek princess married to a Ruthenian nobleman and it was housed in the royal palac...e at Belz in the Ukraine for the next 600 years. Art historians believe it is a Byzantine icon of the Hodigitria type dating from the 6th - 9th Century. The image was brought to Poland in 1382 by Ladislaus of Opole who rescued the painting from Belz while escaping an attack by the Tartars who had damaged the painting with an arrow. On his way to Silesia, Ladislaus stopped to rest in the town of Czestochowa near the church on Jasna Gra (Bright Hill). He believed that it was Our Ladys desire for her image to remain in Czestochowa so he left the image at the church and invited the Pauline monks from Hungary to be its guardians. On April 14, 1430, robbers, sometimes associated with the Hussites of Bohemia, looted the monastery and made three slashes on the face of Our Lady in an attempt to remove valuable stones, finally smashing the image into three pieces. In order to repair the icon, the original paint was removed and the icon was repainted. Although the icon was restored, the slashes in Our Ladys face remain visible today. Our Lady of Czestochowa, pray for us
22.01.2022 Today is the feast of St Clement I, Pope! Clement of Rome was the third successor of Saint Peter, reigning as pope during the last decade of the first century. He’s known as one of the Church’s five Apostolic Fathers, those who provided a direct link between the Apostles and later generations of Church Fathers. Clement’s First Epistle to the Corinthians was preserved and widely read in the early Church. This letter from the bishop of Rome to the Church in Corinth concerns a... split that alienated a large number of the laity from the clergy. Deploring the unauthorized and unjustifiable division in the Corinthian community, Clement urged charity to heal the rift. St Clement I, patron of marble workers, mariners and tanners, pray for us
21.01.2022 Today is the feast of The Martyrdom of St John the Baptist! The Church, having celebrated the earthly birthday of St. John the Baptist on June 24, today honors the anniversary of his martyrdom. Besides our Lord and our Lady, St. John the Baptist is the only one whose birth and death are thus celebrated. Todays Gospel relates the circumstances of his execution. He had the courage to blame Herod to his face for the scandal of his illegal union with his sister-in-law Herodias, whose husband was still alive. Herodias contrived to make Herod imprison him and took advantage of an unexpected opportunity to obtain through her daughter Salome the beheading of the saint. St John the Baptist, pray for us
19.01.2022 Today is the feast of St Giles, Hermit & Abbot! St Giles is said to have been a seventh century Athenian of noble birth. His piety and learning made him so conspicuous and an object of such admiration in his own country that, dreading praise and longing for a hidden life, he left his home and sailed for France. At first he took up his abode in a wilderness near the mouth of the Rhone river, afterward near the river Gard, and, finally, in the diocese of Nimes. He spend many ye...ars in solitude conversing only with God. The fame of his miracles became so great that his reputation spread throughout France. He was highly esteemed by the French king, but he could not be prevailed upon to forsake his solitude. He admitted several disciples, however, to share it with him. He founded a monastery, and established an excellent discipline therein. In succeeding ages it embraced the rule of St. Benedict. St. Giles died probably in the beginning of the eighth century, about the year 724. St Giles, patron of beggars, blacksmiths, breast cancer, breast feeding, cancer patients, disabled people, Edinburgh (Scotland), epilepsy, fear of night, noctiphobics, forests, hermits, horses, lepers, mental illness, outcasts, poor people, rams, spur makers, sterility, pray for us
18.01.2022 Today is the feast of St Bartholomew, Apostle! St Bartholomew, a doctor in the Jewish law, was a dear friend of St. Philip the Apostle. Because Bartholomew was a man "in whom there was no guile," his mind was open to the truth. He went willingly with Philip to see Christ, and recognized the Savior immediately as the Son of God. After having received the gifts of the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost, Bartholomew evangelized Asia Minor, northwestern India, and Greater Armenia. In the latter country, while preaching to idolaters, he was arrested and condemned to death. St Bartholomew, patron of bookbinders, butchers, cobblers, pray for us
17.01.2022 Today is the feast of St John Eudes! St John Eudes (1601-1680) was born in Ri and died in Caen, France. Despite the prevailing rigors of Jansenism, he received First Communion when only a child. He studied in Paris and was ordained a priest in 1625. He soon became an outstanding missionary among his plague-stricken countrymen, living an irreproachable life and devoting all his energies to the cause of Christ. In 1643 he founded the Society of Jesus and Mary (Eudists) to preach missions to the people, direct seminaries, and conduct retreats for the clergy. He was a great opponent of the Jansenistic heresy, and always showed an unchanging devotion to the Holy See. St John Eudes, pray for us

14.01.2022 Today is the feast of St Augustine of Hippo, Bishop & Doctor! St Augustine (354-430) was born at Tagaste, Africa, and died in Hippo. His father, Patricius, was a pagan; his mother, Monica, a devout Christian. He received a good Christian education. As a law student in Carthage, however, he gave himself to all kinds of excesses and finally joined the Manichean sect. He then taught rhetoric at Milan where he was converted by St Ambrose. Returning to Tagaste, he distributed his goods to the poor, and was ordained a priest. He was made bishop of Hippo at the age of 41 and became a great luminary of the African Church, one of the four great founders of religious orders, and a Doctor of the universal Church. St Augustine, patron of brewers, printers, theologians and sore eyes, pray for us
14.01.2022 Today is the feast of St Pope Pius X Joseph Sarto was born in humble circumstances at Riese, a small village in Venetia, on June 2, 1835. He was successively curate, parish priest, bishop of Mantua, Patriarch of Venice offices to which his keen intelligence, hard work and great piety caused him to be quickly promoted. He was elected Pope on August 4, 1903, and took the name of Pius X. As chief pastor of the Church he displayed untiring self-sacrifice and great energy; he wa...s an intrepid defender of the purity of Christian doctrine. He realized to the full the value of the liturgy as the prayer of the Church and the solid basis that it furnishes for the devotion of Christian people; he worked for the restoration of the worship of the Church, especially plainchant, so that Christian people, as he put it, might find beauty in their public prayer. He spared no effort to propagate the practice, so great an aid to holiness, of early, frequent and daily communion. He died August 20, 1914 and was canonized on May 29, 1954. St Pope Pius X, pray for us

14.01.2022 Today is the feast of St Hyacinth of Poland! While a canon at the cathedral of Cracow, Hyacinth journeyed to Rome, was impressed by the preaching and miracles of St. Dominic, and from the hand of Dominic himself received the habit of the newly-founded Order. Upon returning to his native land (1219), he established monasteries of his Order beyond the Alps at Friesach, Prague, Olmiitz, and Cracow. From the Breviary we have this miracle. With three companions Hyacinth had arrive...d at the banks of the river Weichsel during their journey to Vischegrad, where they were expected to preach. But the waters had risen so high and had become so violent that no ferryman dared to cross. The saint took his mantle, spread it out before him, and with his companions rode across the raging waters. After saying his Office for the day, he died in 1257 with these words on his lips: "Into Your hands, Lord, I rest my spirit!" St Hyacinth, patron of Poland, pray for us

12.01.2022 Today is the feast of St Louis IX! St Louis IX, (1215-1270) who became King of France at the age of twelve, had been religiously brought up by his mother, Blanche of Castile. Throughout his life he remained deeply devout and as a king his conduct was that of a real saint. He devoted himself to the affairs of his kingdom and to those of Christendom and was a great peacemaker kings and princes constantly sought his aid in settling disputes. He was humble and upright, helpful ...to the needy and in person nursed lepers and the sick. St Louis gave to all the examples of a life overflowing with charity and sovereign justice. He was a tertiary of the Order of the Holy Trinity and Captives (the Trinitarians) and a strong supporter of the Franciscan Orders and other mendicant orders as well. A full decade before he died in Tunis, in honor of the Kings support and Catholic manner of life, St Bonaventure proposed to the Franciscans General Chapter that suffrages be prayed for the King annually (essentially a Feast Day, as for those already sainted!), the the Chapter approved the proposal three years later. Immediately after Louis IXs death, the Franciscans began an active campaign for his canonization, and he was venerated by the Secular Franciscan Order and the Third Order Regular as protector and advocate as soon as he was canonized. He died near Tunis, lying on a bed of ashes, during a crusade for the deliverance of the Holy Land. St Louis IX, patron of barbers, builders, button makers, construction workers, pray for us
12.01.2022 Today is the feast St Bernard of Clairvaux, Doctor! Bernard, the second founder of the Cistercians, the Mellifluous Doctor, the apostle of the Crusades, the miracle-worker, the reconciler of kings, the leader of peoples, the counselor of popes! His sermons, from which there are many excerpts in the Breviary, are conspicuous for genuine emotion and spiritual unction. The celebrated Memorare is ascribed to him. Bernard was born in 1090, the third son of an illustrious Burgundia...n family. At the age of twenty-two he entered the monastery of Citeaux (where the Cistercian Order had its beginning) and persuaded thirty other youths of noble rank to follow his example. Made abbot of Clairvaux (1115), he erected numerous abbeys where his spirit flourished. To his disciple, Bernard of Pisa, who later became Pope Eugene III, he dedicated his work De Consideratione. Bernards influence upon the princes, the clergy, and the people of his age was most remarkable. By penitential practices he so exhausted his body that it could hardly sustain his soul, ever eager to praise and honor God. St Bernard of Clairvaux, patron of beekeepers, bees, candlemakers, pray for us
11.01.2022 Today is the feast of The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary! The faithful, under the guidance of an unerring Catholic instinct, have ever recognised the queenly dignity of the Mother of "The King of Kings and Lord of Lords": the Fathers, the Doctors of the Church, Popes, down through the centuries, have given authoritative expression to this truth and the crowning testimony to this common belief is to be found clearly expressed in the wonders of art and in the profound tea...ching of the liturgy. In their turn theologians have shown the fitting nature of this title of Queen as applied to the Mother of God, since she was so closely associated with the redemptive work of her Son and is the Mediatrix of all graces. Pius XII, by his encyclical letter of October 11, 1954, granted the unanimous desire of the faithful and their pastors and instituted the feast of the Queenship of Mary, giving sanction thus to a devotion that was already paid by the faithful throughout the world to the sovereign Mother of heaven and earth. 11.01.2022 Today is the feast of St Cecilia, Martyr! PRAYER: Saint Cecilia, I also admire the purity of love that bound you to the Savior, which was greater in your eyes than any human affection, so that you declared yourself before the enemies of the Church, "I am the bride of my Lord Jesus Christ". Pray for me that in imitation of you I may keep my body pure and my soul holy, and that I may love Jesus with all my heart.... St Cecilia, patroness of music, pray for us
10.01.2022 Today is the feast of St Nicholas of Tolentino! Nicholas of Tolentine (1245-1305) was a simple priest and Augustinian friar who touched the lives of many. His spirit of prayer, penance, austerity of life and devotion to the Holy Souls were notable. His preaching brought many to Christ. He joined the Augustinian Order while a young man, after hearing the inspired preaching of Reginaldo da Monterubbiano, Prior (local superior) of the Augustinian monastery in SantAngelo. As a p...riest and religious, he was full of charity towards his brother Augustinians as well as towards the people to whom he ministered. He visited the sick and cared for the needy. He was a noted preacher of the Gospel. He gave special attention to those who had fallen away from the Church. People considered him a miracle worker. He often fasted and performed other works of penance. He spent long hours in prayer. The story is told that, one day, having fasted for a long time, Nicholas was physically weak. While at prayer, Jesus told him to eat some bread marked with a cross and soaked in water in order to regain his strength. Thus arose the Augustinian custom of blessing and distributing Saint Nicholas Bread in his memory. Another story relates that Nicholas, while asleep in bed, heard the voice of a deceased friar he had known. This friar told Nicholas that he was in Purgatory, and urged him to celebrate the Eucharist for him and other souls there, so that they would be set free by the power of Christ. Nicholas did so for seven days. The friar again spoke to Nicholas, thanking him and assuring him that a large number of souls were now with God. During most of his adult life, Nicholas lived in Tolentine, Italy. There he died September 10, 1305. Canonized in 1446 by Pope Eugene IV, Nicholas is the first Augustinian friar to be canonized after the Grand Union of the Order of St. Augustine in 1256. The remains of St. Nicholas are preserved at the Shrine of Saint Nicholas in the city of Tolentine. St Nicholas of Tolentino, patron of the souls in Purgatory, against epidemic disease and against fires, pray for us
10.01.2022 Today is the feast of St Gregory the Great, Pope! St Gregory, senator and prefect of Rome, then in succession monk, cardinal and pope, governed the Church from 590 to 604. England owes her conversion to him. At a period when the invasion of the barbarians created a new situation in Europe, he played a considerable part in the transitional stage, during which a great number of them were won for Christ. At the same time he watched over the holiness of the clergy and preserved e...cclesiastical discipline, as well as attending to the temporal interests of his people of Rome and the spiritual interests of the whole of Christendom. To him the liturgy owes several of its finest prayers, and the name "Gregorian chant" recalls this great Popes work in the development of the Churchs chant. His commentaries on Holy Scripture exercised a considerable influence on Christian thought, particularly in the Middle Ages. St Gregory the Great, patron of choir boys, music, choirs, pray for us

Monica was a Christian, but her husband Patricius was a pagan and a man of loose morals. Monicas virtues and prayers, however, converted him, and he was baptized a year before his death. When her son, Augustine, joined the Manichean sect and went astray in faith and morals, Monicas tears and prayers for her son were incessant. She f...ollowed him to Milan, where Augustine went to teach, and there continued to storm heaven with her prayers for her son. Finally, she had the joy of witnessing St Ambrose baptized Augustine in 387. She died in Ostia, as she and her son gazed at the sea and discoursed about the joys of the blessed. St Monica, patroness of abuse victims, alcoholics, alcoholism, difficult marriages, disappointing children, pray for us

07.01.2022 Today is the feast of St Regina, Martyr! The history of St. Regina is largely unknown although a general outline exists. She was born around 236 in Alesia on the border of ancient Gaul and Rome. Her father, Clement was a prominent, and wealthy, pagan. Her mother died at childbirth. A Christian nurse who baptised her, became her guardian. Regina tended sheep for the nurse following her father disowning her due to her beliefs. The prefect of Gaul, Olybrius, decided to marry her.... However, she refused to renounce her faith and denied his proposal. He threw her in prison where she was tortured while he fought off the barbarians. Olybrius returned from war to find Regina still rejecting his advances. He had her throat cut in 286 at Autun. Depicted with a vision of a dove and cross while being tortured St Regina, patroness against poverty, impoverishment, shepherdesses and torture victims, pray for us
06.01.2022 Today is the feast of St Rosalia! Saint Rosalia, born in 1130 at Palermo in Sicily, was the daughter of a noble family descended from Charlemagne. While still very young she despised worldly vanities. When her remarkable beauty caused her to be sought in marriage by several lords of Sicily, the Blessed Virgin appeared to her and advised her to leave the world. She obeyed, taking with her only a crucifix and her instruments of penance; and guided by Angels, she made her first ...dwelling in a nearby grotto, which the snows of winter concealed. Then, when she began to be the object of searches instigated all over Sicily by her desolate family, she was advised by Angels to move to a low cave on Mount Pellegrino, three miles from Palermo. There, during sixteen years time, she completed the sacrifice of her heart to God by austere penance and manual labor, sanctified by assiduous prayer and the constant union of her soul with God. She died in 1160. Little Pictorial Lives of the Saints St Rosalia, pray for us
06.01.2022 Today is the Solemnity of The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary! On November 1, 1950, Pius XII defined the dogma of the Assumption. Thus he solemnly proclaimed that the belief whereby the Blessed Virgin Mary, at the close of her earthly life, was taken up, body and soul, into the glory of heaven, definitively forms part of the deposit of faith, received from the Apostles. To avoid all that is uncertain the Pope did not state either the manner or the circumstances of time and place in which the Assumption took place only the fact of the Assumption of Mary, body and soul, into the glory of heaven, is the matter of the definition. Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of death. Amen

St Agricolus succeeded his father ten years later and became famous for preaching and aid to the sick and poor. Depicted here with a dragon, St Agricolus, like Sts. When he was set free he was made a Cardinal by Gregory IX and died on his return to Rome in 1240. St Raymund Nonnatus, patron of falsely accused people, pray for us

04.01.2022 Today is the feast of St Teresa of Calcutta! By blood, I am Albanian. By citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus. Small of stature, rocklike in faith, Mother Teresa of Calcutta was entrusted with the mission of proclaiming Gods thirsting love for humanity, especially for the poorest of the poor. God still loves the world and He sends you and me to be His love and His compassion to the poor. She was a soul filled with the light of Christ, on fire with love for Him and burning with one desire: to quench His thirst for love and for souls. St Teresa of Calcutta, pray for us
04.01.2022 Today is the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary! PRAYER: Heavenly Father, the Blessed Virgin Mary was dedicated to You by her parents when she was three. In the temple, she joined the girls who spent their days praying, reading Scripture, and serving the temple priests. Her holiness was very evident, and the high priest thought that You probably had great plans for her. I ask Mary to pray for the plans You have for my life. Where I have strayed onto a road of my own choosing, give me her hand to guide me back to where You want me. Where I need to wait for a new plan to begin, give me the grace remain patient and say, "Your will be done." Blessed Virgin Mary, pray for me. Amen
04.01.2022 Today is the feast of St Rose of Lima! Inspired by the example of St. Catherine of Siena, Rose became a Dominican lay tertiary and devoted herself to works of active charity while living a life of extreme austerity. She longed to evangelize the Indians, not at all discouraged by the thought that they would probably kill her. St. Martin de Porres and St. John Masias were among her friends.
