24.01.2022 We're nearly at the end of Movember! Mr Brad Hicks, our PE Teacher here at St Catherine's shares his thoughts on men's mental health awareness: 'Mental Health issues are increasingly prevalent in all communities - it would be uncommon not to know someone effected by mental illness. Having a rural background, good help is hard to find, and it can be hard for older generation males to break through the stigma surrounding mental health and seek help. More often than not, it ...is well hidden, and even those closest to those effected may not know at all or may not know the full extent of the problem. Hopefully some of the money raised will also reach rural communities'. You can support our St Catherine's Merry Men here: https://au.movember.com/team/2372117 #lifeastcatherines #movember

24.01.2022 We profiled this outstanding student yesterday and are thrilled to extend our congratulations to Romy Cantwell our 2020 St Catherine’s School Dux. There is much indeed that is impressive in relation to Romy’s contribution to life at St Catherine’s. As Davis House Co-Captain, she has led by example with her commitment and positivity, while her infectious sense of fun and competitive spirit encourages other students. This extensive involvement has been recognised with House Co...lours in 2020, the Dark Blue Award for Academic Excellence and Light Blue Award for Performance in Rowing. A hardworking athlete, Romy has been a member of numerous sporting teams including GSV Swimming and Rowing. Her significant and successful involvement in Rowing saw her crew, the First VIII, achieve a first-place finish at the Henley Regatta and the Victorian State Rowing Championships. As Co-Captain of Boats for 2020, Romy was awarded Full Colours for Rowing. Additionally, Romy was the recipient of the Thora Jex Memorial Award for Sporting Enthusiasm in 2019 and awarded Contribution Sport Colours in 2020. Romy has balanced her extensive contribution to the broader life of the School, with an equally impressive commitment to her academic program. She is a hardworking and diligent student who approached her studies with enthusiasm and positivity. Always one with a friendly smile and greeting, Romy is a student who supports her peers and who has established strong and enduring friendships within the year group and, indeed, throughout the School community. 21.01.2022 'I was interested in creating a photographic series about the representations of the unusual body. I created a series of images that used body positioning, location and camera angles. When experimenting with these codes, I developed an idea based on my subject moving around in surreal and unusual body positions'. 'Through the use of my chosen location, I was able to take wide landscape shots which helped me create negative and positive space within the frame. I used natur...al light from the sun to create beautiful shadows of the white flowing fabric. Through the conventions of art photography, I edited my photographs in black and white, as it is a powerful and evocative way to help capture an unsettling mood. I took advantage of the natural wind allowing the fabric to flow in the air, creating the visual style of surrealism that can be created the using the human body'. - Isabella Bufe (Year 11), Media Units 1 & 2 You can see more of Isabella's incredible work in our virtual 2020 VCE Art Show - the end result of an entire years' work for our VCE Art students here: https://www.visualarts.stcatherines.net.au/ #lifeatstcatherines #virtualexhibition
21.01.2022 'My studio exploration revolves around relationships and how they affect people and in the case of this final artwork, how a lack of any significant relationships loneliness, can affect a person. In this artwork I wanted to address the strong stigma centred around loneliness'. 'The situation I’ve aimed to put my subject in is a social situation where there would be people surrounding him yet in my eyes, feeling lonely has little to do with how many friends you have. In real...ity, some people who feel lonely may rarely interact with people and others are surrounded by people, but don't feel connected'. - Margaret Handolias, Year 12 Studio Arts 3 & 4 You can see more of Margaret's incredible work in our virtual 2020 VCE Art Show - the end result of an entire years' work for our VCE Art students: https://www.visualarts.stcatherines.net.au/ #lifeatstcatherines #VCEartexhibition
21.01.2022 Principal Michelle Carroll reflects on the value of Humanities subjects, and what the recent proposal by the Australian government pertaining to 'Job Ready Graduates', may mean for students, their choices, and their futures, when considering their University degree and the increase in cost if they choose to pursue the Humanities. http://www.stcatherines.net.au//the-value-of-the-humaniti/
21.01.2022 Today marks St Catherine's Day St Catherine of Alexandria is the Christian patron saint of young girls and students, nurses and of craftsmen whose work is based on a wheel, such as spinners and millers. Catherine lived in the Fourth Century in Egypt, and was persecuted for her religious beliefs. The ‘Catherine Wheel’ is named after the wheel on which she was martyred. ... St Catherine's relics remain in the Monastery, atop Mount Catherine in Egypt. #lifeatstcatherines #stcatherinesday
20.01.2022 As our Year 6 Barbreck students are finishing their Junior School journey, and transitioning to life in the Senior School, we have shared some of their reflections. How does it feel to be Year 6, finishing at Barbreck? It’s exciting to be going into Senior School, and a bit of a relief to be halfway through school. ... What have you learnt from your time at Barbreck that you will take with you into the Senior School? I’ve learnt to give everything a go and try new things, which has shown me what I’m good at and what I need to try harder at. What are you most proud of from your time at Barbreck? I’m probably most proud of my sporting achievements like setting a new record for the School at the State Cross Country, and I’m really grateful to the teachers guiding me there. We are looking forward to seeing you in the Senior School next year Emma, and know you will enjoy your last weeks at Barbreck! #lifeatstcatherines
20.01.2022 Who stole Mrs Carroll's mug?? Our 2021 Year 7 cohort had their Orientation today, and in their Science class Mrs Brady taught the students how to find out what colour dyes are used in individual black inks. We used the chromatography technique, and compared the inks from the pens of different teachers in the Senior School, to find out who had left the incriminating note stating they had stolen Mrs Carroll's favourite mug. It was a wonderful opportunity for the Year 6 Barbrec...k students and our new students joining us next year to meet and get to know each other, their teachers, explore the Senior School and start the next step of their educational journey together #lifeatstcatherines #year7orientation
19.01.2022 We're nearly at the end of Movember! Mr Dylan Licastro, our Drama Teacher here at St Catherine's shares his thoughts on men's mental health awareness: 'I have been pretty lucky to have some amazing male role models in my life, throughout high school, performing, and now teaching here at St Catherine’s School, and I would be lost without them guiding me, laughing with (or at) me, and supporting me when I needed it most. I hope to be a positive male role model for the wonde...rful students here at St Catherine’s, just like the great men that I surround myself with on a daily basis. By talking about (normalising) mental health, I hope that the stigma or taboo nature of the content will dissipate. 2020 has been a rough year for many people and I hope that the funds raised, along with our hilarious moustaches, supports those that need it most. Remember to get checked lads, mentally and physically!' You can support our St Catherine's Merry Men here: https://au.movember.com/team/2372117 #lifeastcatherines #movember
19.01.2022 As our Year 12 students are winding down their St Catherine's journey as students, we have asked a handful of our cohort to reflect on their journey - co-curricular, academic, lessons, gratitude, and lifelong memories that this space has held for them over such formative years. We are delighted to share the reflections of the Class of 2020, with you Isabel Simons ('20) 'Undoubtedly COVID-19 has taught me how to be flexible and adaptable, sometimes even when it feels li...ke there is no other option. I think these are some very beneficial skills to possess because often in the ‘real world’, you are required to think on your feet'. 18.01.2022 Who is your Online Hero? Our students have shared heartfelt sentiments about a teacher in their lives they consider to be their Online Hero. Learn@Home has been a new experience, challenging at times, but ultimately one that has been grabbed with both hands and embraced by both students and staff alike. We were so touched by the responses of our students, and hope you too, enjoy.
18.01.2022 Year 9 student Tahlia Guzzardi created a series of pieces for our Time Capsule project. The brief of the project was to create a digital suite of images that capture the essence of life during COVID19, to portray our experience to art students in generations to come. Tahlia, a digital media student, chose her brother as her subject for the suite, and captured his feelings of sadness, anger, loneliness, hope and longing. #lifeatscatherines #lifeinthetimeofcoronavirus

17.01.2022 "What you do for yourself dies with you when you leave this world. What you do for others lives on forever. Sir Ken Robinson Principal Michelle Carroll reflects on the life of Sir Ken Robinson, in light of his recent passing, and highlights the correlation between the elements of creativity and education in his philosophy, and ours at St Catherine's. 'Educators across the globe were saddened with the news of the passing of Sir Ken Robinson this past week. He challenged a...ll to refocus the very essence of schooling, in particular, the need to prepare children for the unpredictability of future events by placing a stronger focus on creativity and learning through failure, rather than being afraid of it.' http://www.stcatherines.net.au//principal-update-vale-sir/

15.01.2022 COVID-19 has certainly taught us to pivot, pirouette and spin! The twists and turns of Term 3 have seen us become experts in online learning, complete our SACs virtually, continue our rowing training in our lounge rooms, hold our annual performing arts productions via MS Teams, music collaborations were redesigned and held digitally, and chess and debating tournaments hosted online. It has certainly been the most extraordinary of times, and our snapshot of our online collabor...ations show just how connected we have remained through this historical event. A reflection we can all take immense pride in, as we reflect on Term 3, 2020. An enormous thanks to our students, our families, our staff and our wider community - we couldn't have done it without you! #lifeatstcatherines

12.01.2022 During NAIDOC week, our Prep students learnt about Indigenous culture through their STEM learning. The Prep students have been learning about push and pull, and to see it in action, they made playdough and explored how they could push and pull the playdough to make different shapes and symbols. Then they pushed their hands into the playdough and left a print, which was then filled with Plaster of Paris. Finally, we linked the students learning in class with the symbols that Indigenous Australians use to paint our hands. It is a fun way to link STEM and classroom learning, especially during such a special week. #lifeatstcatherines #NAIDOC
12.01.2022 Exploring the links between music and learning in early learners, Head of ELC Ms Sarah Bethune discusses the relationship between both the brain and body, and the skills that are developed in children through their musical experiences. 12.01.2022 As our Year 6 Barbreck students are finishing their Junior School journey and transitioning to life in the Senior School, we have spoken with them about their time at Barbreck. What have you learnt from your time at Barbreck that you will take with you into the Senior School? Chloe: I have learnt to be nice to everyone and make an effort when talking to new people and you don’t always have to be the best at stuff it only counts if you try and that you should always try ne...w things because that’s how I found some of my passions. I have also learnt who my real friends are and I’m very grateful for them. What are you most proud of from your time at Barbreck? My most proud moment would probably be when we did the school musical and I got to be the bird woman and got to sing a whole song by myself would be what I am most proud of and it was also one of the best junior school experiences of my life. How does it feel to be Year 6 finishing at Barbreck, Chloe? I’m excited for the senior school but I’m also going to be sad to leave because I have grown up here and I have made so many friends here that will last forever. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us Chloe, enjoy your last few days at Barbreck and we look forward to seeing you in the Clocktower, 2021! #lifeatstcatherines #year6leaver

08.01.2022 Due to Covid restrictions our regular Year 4 camp to Anglesea could not take place, and the Irongirl event at Point Roadknight didn’t happen. Not wanting to let the prestigious trophy go through 2020 without a name on it, the Year 4 classes took part in a School based swim run event. In an enthralling race, Carla Martuccio was the first into the swimming pool along with Alie Belan and Arabella Foote. The big movers in the pool were Coco Lutz and Clara Barry who swam past the ...leaders to exit the water first. In a chaotic changing frenzy it was Clara Barry who headed out on the final run in first place and managed to hold off Coco Lutz and Camilla Aberdeen to claim the wooden trophy. Well done to everybody! Our Top Ten in the Year 4 Irongirl were: 1. Clara Barry 2. Coco Lutz 3. Camilla Aberdeen 4. Carla Martuccio 5. Arabella Foote 6. Tara Pattison 7. Jessica Huang 8. Alie Belan 9. India Vasilopoulos 10. Isla Rosenberg #lifeatstcatherines #irongirl

08.01.2022 As we look to the future and consider what life beyond school may look like for today's young people, the COVID19 pandemic has enabled society to consider the relationship between people and place, hybrid learning models, and the future of both school and work. Principal Michelle Carroll considers elements of both school and work in her recent article, here: http://www.stcatherines.net.au//principal-update-life-bey/ #lifeatstcatherines #lifeafterschool
07.01.2022 Our Prep students have not skipped a beat in their learning and development during their first year of schooling, albeit a tumultuous one. Our small class sizes have enabled our ability to tailor learning to the individual needs and strengths of our students, and Prep Teacher Annie Taylor shares an update from the students below. Who else can say they wake up each morning, to be greeted by smiling faces with stories to share? Prep T have continued to sail through Term 3 as w...e work as a team to make our way through. We have started show and tell during our lunchtime check ins and the girls have been busily recording themselves reading picture story books which we are then sharing to the class. The video responses to lessons are fantastic. Each student's personality gets to shine through and their voices can truly be heard. It is a beautiful insight into their thinking. During our wellbeing sessions, we have recently been focusing on what resilience means. The students said we need to be confident and brave and keep trying. We show resilience by practicing and practicing. Here are some of their examples of when our Prep students felt they showed resilience: E - A time I felt I should give up was on the monkey bars. I couldnt do the second one. I just kept trying and trying. I still dont know how to do the monkey bars but it doesnt mean I have to give up, right! J - Getting up a big hill on my bike by practicing. Every time I got up that hill I got a little further up by myself and then tada one day I got up the whole hill by myself. M - When I was still little I couldnt put a top on by myself but I tried and tried and I didnt give up until I could do it and now I can take my t-shirt off and I can put it on. #lifeatstcatherines

We would like to congratulate the students who got their best yellow outfits on to honour those who have lost ...their lives and those who continuously and bravely battle childhood cancer. We would also like to congratulate and thank the amazing St Catherines community for their generosity, in helping those in need especially during these difficult circumstances. As 2020 is a year of new beginnings, we have set a tradition on Daffodil Day that can be carried out by all Community Services Captains in the following years, as well as every other student that wishes to raise awareness and funds in this battle. 04.01.2022 Our Year 9 students have been sharing images of the views outside their windows, and the changes they've noticed between the first lockdown period in Melbourne, and the second. 'Compared to the last lockdown, Ive been trying to spend a lot less time on my electronic devices! Because, although they are a really helpful way of communication, its really nice to have a break from them every now and again. Ive been trying to do activities in my garden, so weve got a few h...erbs and vegetables for our veggie patch and they are all coming along really well!' - Ava 'Compared with lockdown one, my life is more regular. I think and list what things that I am going to do every day. I know how to plan my time properly. And I started running every day, to ensure a certain amount of exercise every day. I became more disciplined'. - Chloe 'During this lockdown I have caught up with more friends for walks and runs compared to the last lockdown. I have gone for at least one walk or run every day before or after school, and that keeps my isolation bearable and I feel mentally better'. - Georgia #lifeatstcatherines
04.01.2022 This year, we have discovered much about our capacity to deal with change, as we have also learned so much about the capacity of our students. They have become more independent, resilient and motivated than we have ever given them recognition for in the past. The significant challenges faced by our Class of 2020 should not be underestimated, and we are reminded that in the long run, friendships remain one of the most precious and lasting momentos of year 12. A quick drive by through Heyington Gates to collect care packs and kind words of wisdom from Mr James Brown and Mrs Ceri Lloyd, and our Class of 2020 are ready to embark on the final leg of their year 12 journey. #lifeatstcatherines

02.01.2022 We're nearly at the end of Movember! Mr James Brown, our Head of Year 12 and Head of Performing Arts here at St Catherine's shares his thoughts on men's mental health awareness: 'In a year where everyone’s reality has been so different to expectation, we have been thrust into a new normal. It has meant people have been separated, felt isolated, and lost their sense of routine and purpose. Being unable to process these situations and associated feelings, or simply bott...ling them up, has had significant mental health repercussions. I see this year’s Movember as an opportunity to remind others that they do not have to go it alone; there are a range of people who can lend a hand or an ear. Looking after our mental and physical health is one of the best things we can do to support those around us you cannot pour from an empty cup. The money we raise will go towards men’s mental health organisations to support us when we need to reach out or get a check-up.' 01.01.2022 Meet Helen Nicolau, one of our ELC Educators here at St Catherine's! As part of our ongoing weekly staff profiling, we endeavour to share and celebrate the differences, passions, and unique elements that strengthen our diverse community of staff, with St Catherines uniting us all. Can you tell us a little about your role at School? I work in the ELC as an Early Childhood Educator who teaches in the 3 year old Blue Gum Classroom. I have been working at St Catherines for 11... years, where I have worked in both the 4yo and 3yo classrooms. What do you find most rewarding in your role? What I find most rewarding in my teaching role is the spontaneous learning that occurs on a day to day basis with the children. It is also rewarding to part of their learning journey as they grow into independent individual who inquire, question, research and share their ideas. What brings you happiness, outside of School? My family bring me happiness. I have two sons aged 7 and 3, who mean the world to me. I share my three hobbies with them; bike riding, cooking and a love of reading. Can you share a little bit about how you grew up? I grew up in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. With my parents working full time, my sister and I spent time with our grandparents prior to starting school. My grandparents first language was Greek, therefore when I started Prep I spoke fluent Greek with limited English. I went to the local Catholic Primary School and local high school, and then studied at the University of Melbourne. What inspired your career pathway? I still remember my first day of 4-year-old kindergarten. I was scared and unsure, and didnt want to leave my Fathers side when being dropped off. I remember the kind words my teacher shared with me to help me overcome my separation anxiety. This inspired me as I embarked on my teaching career ensuring children feel safe, secure and supported when they step into my classroom. #lifeatstcatherines #whoweare
