14.01.2022 Today we commemorate the Exaltation of the Precious, Life-Giving and Evermost Holy Cross of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is an extremely blessed day as we celebrate the astounding power of the Cross of the Lord. Through the Holy Cross, the power and wisdom of God is revealed. We are reconciled to Christ, finding true peace, by the Cross. And it is the Holy Cross that guides us on the path of salvation and eternal life to Christ our Lord. ... In the twentieth year of his reign (326), the Emperor Constantine sent his mother Saint Helen to Jerusalem to venerate the holy places and to find the site of the Holy Sepulchre and of the Cross. Relying upon the oral tradition of the faithful, Saint Helen found the precious Cross together with the crosses of the two thieves crucified with our Lord. However, Helen had no way of determining which was the Cross of Christ. On the spot where the Cross was discovered there was found to grow a hitherto unknown flower of rare beauty and fragrance which has been named Vasiliko (Basil), meaning the flower of royalty, out of respect to the Empress Queen who led the expedition. This flower, since that memorable day over 1600 years ago, has been the official flower of the Orthodox Christian Church and is in evidence when Clergymen engage in the age-old tradition of blessing homes. With the healing of a dying woman who touched one of the crosses, Patriarch Macarius of Jerusalem identified the True Cross of Christ. Saint Helen and her court venerated the Precious and Life-Giving Cross along with many others who came to see this great instrument of Redemption. May God bless us all
