01.01.2022 This weekend we remembered a significant occasion, on the 13th December 2020 was the 40th anniversary to the day that the Illawarra Steelers gained admission to the Big League. Saturday, 13th December, 1980; After the all-day meeting of the NSW Rugby League General Committee. History was made! We had not even formed a club, just a submission from an enthusiastic group of Rugby League people, who wanted their region recognised and to be given an opportunity. The first competit...ion game in February 1982 gave way to the de-centralisation of the competition, opening the gates for teams such as Canberra and Newcastle to join. Over the last 40 years to now, the Illawarra continues to be the nursery of Rugby League champions and we can’t wait to see what the next 40 years bring. Come on, mighty Wollongong, we’re the Illawarra Steelers!
