25.01.2022 History thats worth sharing I came across some old photos from Gay Constructions 'Phase 2' Workshop that was located at Lytton Road Morningside between 1995 and 2006. These photos were taken some time in 1995.... The workshop was considered to be very modern at the time and was a massive improvement from the original facility at Didsbury Street East Brisbane. The workshop was approximately 4000 Sq meters in size and was designed for the efficient workflow of high volumes of structural steel on a 'Just in Time' basis. The workshop produced approximately 3500 man hours per week when day and night shifts were in full swing. Gay Constructions were considered one of the leading structural steel fabricators in the State. Some iconic Infrastructure projects were fabricated in this workshop, to name just a few; * Stage 1 of the Gabba Grandstand Roof and Seating Support Structure. * A number of Stages of Carindale Shopping Center * 3000 tonne of structural steel for the Olympic Dam Project in South Australia * Rolleston Coal Stacker * 2500 tonne of structural steel for Stage 1 of the Comalco Aluminium Refinery in Gladstone. * Thousands of tonnes of structural steel for Space Frame Buildings with a large portion exported to China between 1995 and 1996. Gay Constructions moved to their final address at Queesnport Road Murrarie in 2007 and stopped trading under this name a few years ago. 17 years of my career was spent working for Gay Constructions in two separate stages between 1984 to 1996 and 2003 to 2008.

20.01.2022 IPD enables Superior Project Controls that are 2nd to NONE Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) methodology can be practically designed, tailored and implemented into various multifaceted project delivery solutions. An ideal solution is the comprehensive project control and management of high volumes of Structural, Mechanical and Piping Equipment involved with the delivery of major multi-disciplined Resource Infrastructure Projects.... When designed, implemented and managed strictly to plan the IPD solution is proven to provide superior project controls, while significantly de-rating the operational and commercial risk throughout all stages of design, procurement , fabrication, logistics and construction. KEY POINTS Early engagement of the steel detailers during the critical stage of design development is essential. The detailers Virtual 3d Model provides a comprehensive backend inventory data base that is mm and kg perfect, with the quantum of material accurate to the last item modelled. The data base can be used to manage, control and track all stages of design , detailing, procurement, fabrication, painting , logistics and installation. The 3d Virtual Model is attributed with colour coding that reflects the various stages of progress throughout all stages of delivery, offering a very simple singular point of common reference. Attached is a case study of a major Coal Infrastructure Project where the IPD Materials Management Solution was implemented and successfully managed. Additional information on the key advantages and benefits of IPD can be found via this link , along with further case studies. http://integratedprojectdelivery.com.au/

15.01.2022 Acid Plant at Port Pirie 23/11/17.

14.01.2022 Final day on site at Port Pire, what an experience!! As the Clients Representative who was responsible for the management of the Fabrication and Construction of the Acid Plant SMP Ducting and associated works , I am very proud to be able to put my name to this critical element of the Project. Over the past 6 (Six ) months this element of the project was the major focus of the redevelopment and was on the Critical Path , with extensive time pressure being applied by senior and... executive management locally, and from Europe . A number of major fabrication and construction challenges were inherited when I commenced my role as Construction Superintendent. With allot of perseverance , collaboration and team work all challenges were eventually overcome, with all Ducts large and small diameter successfully installed. The foot print size the plant sits within is very compressed which made the fabrication and installation of the large Ducting Design complex and prone to construction risk. I was fortunate to have Downer EDI Engineering as the major SMP Construction Contractor assigned to this scope of work. Their leader ship team was extremely focussed and their commitment to safety was second to none. The spirit of construction contracting, communication and cooperation was excellent and some of the best I have experienced in the past 25 years. As always its the workforce who make these projects come together and complete the physical work. The team I witnessed undertake this work were extremely well lead, highly skilled tradesman and specialist in their field. Despite all the time pressure and construction challenges involved ,the end result was a successful and safe installation process. http://www.steelink.com.au/

13.01.2022 Curragh Coal Mine Expansion and the QLD Floods of 2010/2011 Steelink were retained to provide a complete Supply Chain Management solution between the Australian Fabricators and the Curragh Mine Site, near Blackwater Central QLD. Time was of the essence with strict delivery deadlines applied to all supply packages.... In Dec 2010 South East Qld and many other parts of the State experienced major floods that effectively disabled road transport to site for up to 8 weeks. This delay created a major backlog and storage issue for the bulk of plate work fabricated in SEQ and the structural steel that was fabricated in Victoria Fortunately the SEQ applicator and Victorian fabricator agreed to hardstand all painted and tiled equipment at their facilities. Steelink Scope of Work In addition to Supply Chain Management , Steelink implemented and managed the Integrated Materials Management and Tracking System via the 3d Virtual Construction Model. Throughout all phases, stakeholders were able to easily track and verify the status of all items at any given time. read more about this project here https://lnkd.in/grwPsYQ

04.01.2022 Flash Back Friday to 2003 Lang Park Pedestrian Bridge Steel Fabricators: DA Manufacturing, Gold Coast.... Steel Detailers: Amalgamated Drafting, Brisbane. Protective Coatings: Allied Coating Services, Red Bank Steel Erectors and Craneage: DA Manufacturing and Mulherin Rigging. What a fabrication nightmare! The contract value more than tripled from the negotiated price due to major design development that occurred during shop detailing and fabrication. In a nut shell, the tender drawing connection design details nominated simple fin plate connections welded to the external face of the CHS. You can see the complexity of the final design in these images, that also included VSL Bars for the diagonal bracing that were not nominated on the tender design drawings. In fact, not a final AFC design drawing was produced . All As Built design documentation was contained within answers to RFI's and the final shop detail drawings. The level of NDT was 100% on all complete penetration welds, basically every node was ultrasonically tested. After fabrication was complete , some trial assemblies took place to prove alignment. Erection was carried out over the Easter weekend. Construction of the bridge went smoothly thanks to allot of detailed forward planning by the delivery team.

02.01.2022 AS/NZS 5131 : CONSTRUCTION CATEGORY ASSESSMENT The Australian Steel Institute recently prepared a 2020 UPDATE , which is a summary of changes and implications to AS/NZS 5131 & AS 4100 One small but important change is to the risk matrix used to assess the Construction Categories.... This important change and definition will assist Engineers with their assessment of the Construction Category and hopefully mitigate very simple steel structures being over specified. Please refer to the RISK MATRIX included in the ASI Flyer, link below We encourage all fabricators and detailers to share this information with Engineers and the Building Contractors. https://www.steel.org.au///5131-4100-2020-Update-Final.pdf
