25.01.2022 On Friday, The Australian Institute of Architects ran part 1 of the NSW Architecture Awards 2020 Showcase. Al Baxter from Populous talked about the Bankwest Stadium, in Parramatta, which received the COLORBOND Award for Steel Architecture in the recent Australian Institute of Architects, NSW Chapter Awards. 12.01.2022 This year for the first time, the Lysaght Inspirations Design Awards included a student category. The students were judged on their designs of a new Lysaght Design Innovation Centre a concept facility intended to house the Lysaght Product Innovation Group. The winning entry was submitted by Jaden M from Deakin University, who won $5,000 for his efforts. The award jury, composed of jury chairs and BlueScope representatives, was impressed by the architectural and structural achievements of Bankwest Stadium. Populous has successfully delivered practical solutions and polished details with a dash of colour. One of our jury members had the pleasure to watch a pop concert in this stadium and was amazed by the experience, despite not being a fan of crowded concerts. The design celebrates steel in its natural form and supports local manufacturing; the stadium was built using Australian steel fabricated and painted in Western Sydney, where the project is sited. Cleverly designed with repeatable elements suitable for installation using standardised construction techniques and sized to minimise transport impacts, the architects astute approach produced great construction and budget efficiencies and also minimised impacts on residents.
