24.01.2022 Steiner Education Australia is part of a wonderful coalition of music organisations and education institutions - called RIVMEO - who are working with the NSW government on a risk management strategy to ensure that we can overcome covid 19 restrictions and get back to singing and playing music as soon as possible. Singing is such a huge part of the Steiner school day. Children take part in morning movement and singing to begin each day. In the early years singing is used to... support the daily rhythm, for example, changing from one activity to another. In kindergarten a teacher will sing an instruction which all children sing back. Singing is simply part of everyday. Of course, there are also the class/school choirs and drama performances which are also integral to our arts based curriculum. Steiner teachers recognise that not all of us will grow up to be world-class musicians. But through singing and playing instruments in school, all students learn to find their voices and to find enjoyment through music. In these times especially, singing is the very thing that should be cherished and maintained to support children’s healthy development and sense of well-being. 20.01.2022 MILKWOOD STEINER SCHOOL Senior Ensemble and Darwin Symphony Orchestra Over many years, Milkwood Steiner School in Darwin has developed a rich and wonderful relationship with the Darwin Symphony Orchestra. In 2020, this has included collaborations on the Darwin Symphony Orchestra Kids Classics; a concert series designed to introduce young audiences to orchestral repertoire.... This week, Milkwood’s Senior Ensemble performed two performances alongside the DSO Education and Outreach ensemble in an adaptation of Stravinsky’s A Soldier’s Tale as the royal drummers, as a string ensemble and choir. This story of a man, the devil and his violin was skilfully adapted as a narrated, musical tale in verse, for younger audiences by DSO’s concertmaster and Education/Outreach officer, and Milkwood’s inspiring violin teacher, Tara Murphy. Tara is a graduate of the Liszt Ferenc Zenemvészeti Egyetem and The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and has won many accolades for her work. The Senior Ensemble’s performance in A Soldier’s Tale came just a week after Milkwood’s Senior Choir featured in the Melbourne Digital Concert Hall’s DSO and Djari Project collaboration, and another exceptional performance with the DSO at the Darwin Entertainment Centre. The choir performed new works in ancient languages including Galpu (Aboriginal language from N.E. Arnhem Land), Old Norse and Hebrew, composed by Galpu clan elder, Guwanbal Gurruwiwi, and Milkwood’s Principal, Netanela Mizrahi. These works were developed for youth choir and premiered by Milkwood Students and The DSO. Their opening piece Miyapunu may be viewed online as part of the online festival for inclusive trade: https://www.gtpalliance.com//miyapunu-by-guwanbal-gurruwiw

17.01.2022 Kindlehill School for Rudolf Steiner Education - Necessary Traditions Creating what we need from what we have It’s becoming obvious and increasingly critical that all of us look towards building a healthier future in our relationship with the earth. Steiner education has always had at its core a rich education for craft making. It is not however craft for craft sake, not tradition for tradition’s sake. It’s an urgent need to create what we need from what we have, keeping t...he wellbeing of the earth at the centre. Kindlehill has visioned for the year, coming out of New Zealand, a focus on Necessary Traditions. Traditions which are necessary to move us towards a sustainable healthy future in relationship with the earth, but also necessary for our wellbeing. As part of this Kindlehill was pleased and proud to host a basket weaving workshop with Harriet Goodall in the recently completed art space. Harriet Goodall is an artist with a stated aim to make art and design that stirs in viewers an awareness of their ancient ties to slow hand making and caring for the earth. She led a group of learners in the process of making baskets which are purposeful and beautiful. The two day event saw the making of backpacks and shoppers all of which were as individual as the hands that made them. Here’s what one participant wrote: I'm dropping you a quick note to say a huge 'Thank You' for organising the Weaving workshop with Harriet Goodall. The experience was very special for me, as I have wanted to have the opportunity to learn about working with cane since high school. The company of the group was a rare treat in these strange times, and the venue was perfect. Kindlehill allowed us to work in a beautiful environment with access to everything we needed, while maintaining our health and safety measures. Please pass on my appreciation to all concerned. Thanks Again.
16.01.2022 Sophia Mundi Steiner School Class 5 Botany With spring having sprung, Class 5 emerged from the long winter months to engage in a Botany Main Lesson at Sophia Mundi! From the humble mushroom, all the way up to the ferns, pines, lichen and higher flowering plants such as the rose, we have been amazed at the harmonious rhythms of nature and the way life creates more life. Here are some examples of the beautiful artwork.
16.01.2022 Chrysalis Steiner School - Green Leaders Waste Audit Class 6 at Chrysalis have been working with Green Leaders on a waste audit of their school campus. The Green Leaders Education Program is run by Sustainable Schools NSW and provides support for students, teachers and schools to develop student-led waste reduction projects.... Class 6 looked at what waste the School generates, thought about how they can repurpose items and take responsibility for litter around the classrooms and high school area. The first picture shows the rubbish that was collected around the gully, and what would have been washed out to the river and then the ocean in significant rain. Rubbish collected at School and taken to the tip each week falls into two categories; landfill and mixed recycling. Food waste is composted on site. Firstly, there was almost no compostable/ food waste in the landfill waste which is excellent, as this can account for up to 40% landfill waste generated in the general population- resulting in methane gas from landfill, and wasted nutrients that could be cycled into valuable compost, so well done Chrysalis! Secondly the school had a low volume of single use plastics in landfill waste, which is fantastic, reflecting the healthy, whole foods and no plastic waste lunches that are common at School. A space for improvement is the litter around the classrooms and grounds in the high school area, that does not break down and could find its way into the ocean. Some of it could have been laying around for a while! To be really super- unavoidable soft plastic waste that is clean could be separated and taken to a RedCycle collection point at Woolworths or Coles. Total landfill waste that the school generated in one week was 18.06kg, a significant amount of that we noticed was recyclable- such as paper, so better sorting to the recycling bin would be good. Recyclable waste from one week amounted to 35.26kg. And we noticed very little contamination though items such as soft plastic that was in the recycling. An interesting off-shoot was some interesting items the girls found that they were able to salvage- such as used canvases that can be painted over and used again! A good reminder to think, even if we may not need something anymore, who else could use it?! Lastly, the class came up with 5 points to improve and reduce waste and litter at School.

13.01.2022 Perth Waldorf School Reconciliation Project In 1995, precious video recordings were made of one of the last fluent Noongar speakers in the world, Elder Cliff Humphries, sharing ancient Noongar Dreamtime stories interwoven with song. His collection of historic materials formed part of the Bennell v State of WA (2006) case securing native title for the Noongar nation. The collection has remained in restricted access archive in the Battye Library of West Australian Historyuntil... now. Working with the students at the Perth Waldorf School in an unprecedented Noongar reconciliation project, the family of Elder Humphries has begun the process of having these stories beautifully illustrated and published to share with the Noongar and wider community. The first of these stories, Aalidja Maali Yok Birrla-ngat Kor-iddny (Swan Woman Returns to her River) will be shared with the community at a historic book launch at the Perth Waldorf School next month. It is a rich story filled with spiritual meaning and deep morals. The launch will feature the archival recording, so the community can watch Elder Cliff Humphries tell the story as they read along. The book itself contains a QR code linking readers to the archival recording, so Noongar language teachers and students can learn the correct pronunciation of the Noongar elements of the story, as well as the correct melody and rhythm of the Noongar songs. With support from local government and community donors, a thousand copies of the book can now be printed and distributed across Noongar country, Australia and overseas. We hope to see a copy in every school library, and hold a vision of the story and, in time the rest of of Elder Humphries' collection, being taught in classrooms all across Noongar boodja as part of a revival of Noongar language and literature through our schools. https://heraldonlinejournal.com/2020//27/a-dream-come-true/
13.01.2022 Peace Day at Kindlehill Steiner School The 6th and 9th of August, 2020 marked the 75th commemoration of the world’s first atomic bombing on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This year, the Kindlehill spirits focused on the theme of 'Golden Repair'; the much-needed healing for the Earth and humanity. The name 'Golden Repair' derives from an ancient Japanese artistry called Kin-tsugi. It is a metaphor that our difficulties and scars in life can be repaired to be something stronger and mo...re beautiful. It is also a celebration of imperfection and our resilience for changes in life. As the whole school gathered, the Performance Space was filled with joy, warmth and courage through everyone’s singing voice, Haiku poems and a brightly stitched Banner of our Hope and Beauty from classes 3 to 6 as well as Kin-tsugi and Ukiyo-e art works from High School. Noah’s amazing story of Japan, and Aki dressed up in an elegant kimono added extra beauty to the day. The ceremony reminded us how important it is to gather every year and to remember that we are determined to make this world more beautiful and harmonious. Sayoko Yanai

09.01.2022 Steiner Education Development Trust Achieves Another Milestone in Queensland for the New Zealand Certificate of Steiner Education (NZCSE) The Queensland Tertiary Admission Centre (QTAC) is a key part of the of the Queensland educational regulatory framework. It confirmed on 19 November that the NZCSE at level 3 with University Entrance gives students admission to Queensland universities. Their scoring system gives a ‘selection rank’. This means students are given an averaged... score similar to those given to state qualifications. There are some courses with restricted entry such as medicine and engineering which may still require a student to sit an SAT, which can then be combined with their CSE to achieve an even higher score. If you have any questions or would like to know more about CSE visit our website www.sedt.co.nz or please contact Mark McGavock at [email protected]

03.01.2022 Sophia Mundi Steiner School - Platonic solids Main Lesson Class 8 at Sophia Mundi have just finished the Platonic Solids Main Lesson and from their submitted work, it is clear that they have rather enjoyed it. The Main Lesson teaches the benefits of care and patience - if a measurement is a little bit off the whole drawing or model will not come out as planned. It also focuses on the importance of purposeful thoughts, without which, the work would not come together as a unifi...ed whole. The class also learnt the allegorical significance of these forms as well as by drawing, building and modelling them in their books, through their appropriate tessellated nets, and in clay (this last being attained through transformation from form to form). Traditionally, these constructions are carried out in chalk, charcoal, and clay (as there is nothing as 'honest' as chalk; nothing as 'fervent' as charcoal; nothing as 'zealous' as clay); the forms and their allegorical interpretations having been part of the Western knowledge framework since Plato, 2500 years ago. In our own day, the forms find their place in modern computer programming logic, whereas their allegorical lessons have never left us. 02.01.2022 TRAUMA-AWARE POSITIVE EDUCATION STRATEGIES FOR STUDENTS WITH COMPLEX NEEDS IN AUSTRALIAN STEINER SCHOOLS Every student is on their own developmental journey through their own education. Teachers, however, are increasingly confronted with challenges in teaching students with complex unmet needs arising through their experiences of chronic stress, trauma, ADHD, peer bullying, school refusal, oppositional defiance disorder, limited attentional capacities, poor emotional regulati...on and poor relationships with peers. These challenges require new perspectives to help Steiner teachers strengthen their own practices in supporting students to thrive . The Berry Street Education Model provides schools with the training, curriculum and strategies to engage even the most challenging students. This education initiative is different because it is based on proven positive education, trauma-informed and wellbeing practices, aligned with our wholistic, development approach to educating the child, that enable students’ academic and personal growth. The model is unique because it educates schools and their leaders to reinforce and sustain cognitive and behavioural change, thereby re-engaging young people in learning and their development emotionally, socially and academically. For primary and high school teachers, teacher assistants, learning support specialists, coordinators, school leaders. The training will run over 4 days. Friday 12 and Saturday 13 February, 2021, and Friday 4 and Saturday 5 June, 2021, at Sophia Mundi Steiner School, Abbotsford Convent Precinct, Melbourne. NSW Teachers Completing the Berry Street Education Model will contribute 20 hours of NESA Registered PD addressing 1.1.2, 1.2.2, 2.1.2, 3.5.2, 4.1.2, 4.2.2 and 4.3.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW. Places are limited, so please book early to avoid disappointment. https://www.steinereducation.edu.au//trauma-aware-educati/
