25.01.2022 It has been reported a staggering 80% of runners will experience an injury that will interfere with their training, over the course of a year. Why is this percentage so high? Sure, factors such as training progression errors, shoes and inconsistent training may contribute. However, the most obvious cause becomes apparent when looking at the demands of running. Unfortunately, it takes more than a good pair of shoes and willpower to get you running successfully. Lets take a l...ook at the forces upon on the body whilst running: - Soleus (deep calf muscle) takes 6-8 x your bodyweight - Gastrocnemius (superficial calf muscle) takes 2-3 x your bodyweight - Glutes 1-3 x your body weight - Quadriceps 4-6 x your body weight It poses the question are you strong enough to run? A good program needs to incorporate strength exercise alongside your running. This is often left out due to lack of time, limited access to the gym or weights or the incorrect belief that putting on muscle mass will make you slower. Body weight exercises (non-resisted or non-weighted exercises) are a good starting point, however they will invariably fall short in helping you reach these strength targets. Strength training can be fairly easy to implement. All you will need is: 1. Purchase some weights (available at most major department stores) 2. A simple set of exercises 3. 2 x a week commitment, best done on days of lower intensity training Need help bulletproofing yourself against running injuries? Give us a call on 6280 1033 or book online.

20.01.2022 When it comes to strength & resistance training in kids, recent research indicates it can be a safe, effective & worthwhile activity for children & adolescents (Figenbaum & Myer, 2012) Contrary to some false beliefs that growth can be stunted, resistance training programs do not negatively impact growth & maturation of pre & early-pubertal youth (Malin, 2006) Always ensure the correct training program and technique are used and implemented by a qualified trainer or Physio

07.01.2022 SWIMMING Neck pain with freestyle? Neck pain is a common complaint amongst recreational swimmers. For most, there may be a simple fix by addressing some common mistakes. Causes for neck pain can include: Excessive head movement - can be either rotating too far to look up towards the sky or lifting the head up and out of the water. As your head lifts out of the water, the hips and feet will reciprocally drop, disrupting your bow wave and streamline position and reducing y...our efficiency. Solution keep your head in the water, you should still have half of one google in the water as you twist to take a breath. Maintaining a flat body through your stroke when your hips and shoulders do not roll toward your breathing side, your neck will need to crane further and higher to get your mouth out of the water. If you have to rotate more than 45 degrees to the side, you will need to work on your body roll. Solution try drills that require you to kick on your side whilst breathing Looking too far forward This head position tends to be much more variable between swimmers. There are no hard and fast rules here for example, triathletes may choose a different position to those in a pool. If you notice you are looking up to the end of the pool, try to bring your gaze down to the floor of the pool. If these tips do not resolve your neck pain, the problem may lie your upper body strength and endurance. This can be addressed with mobility and strength exercises. Book yourself in for a swim screen to get you back swimming pain free. Call us on 08 6280 1033

05.01.2022 Been forced to take a couple of weeks or a few months off running? Unsure how to get back to where you were? The key is to find a level of running distance and speed your healing tissues can tolerate, then increase from here. Once your physio has cleared you to run, the first step is to perform a test run: how far you can run, and at what speed, before your pain comes on. Once we have this measure we can plot your weekly progressions. An example of a cautious starting po...int would be: 2-3 runs a week a mix of 1-2 short runs (50-60% of your baseline) and a long run (80-90% of your baseline). Eg 6 km pain free, your short run would be 3-3.6km and your long run 4.8-5.4km Consider: - Increase your training load by no more than 10% each week - Increase your volume before you increase your intensity/speed. This may be different for those who are working to improve their cadence as part of their recovery - Rest days between runs - Monitor your symptoms throughout during, after and the next day. If you score <2/10 pain 24 hours after the run, you are at an appropriate level. If you score above a 2/10 and it takes 48 hours to settle, you need to dial back the distance or speed - Do not forget your rehab !!! Returning to running after surgery or after long periods will likely require a graded walk/run interval program instead. See more
