25.01.2022 The Children’s Cancer Research Unit at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead is turning stem cells into human brain cells, which are then given real brain cancer tumour cells. These mini-brains mimic exactly what goes on inside a human brain afflicted with a deadly brain cancer. This allows scientists to test new therapies that will one day cure the biggest cancer killer of kids.

19.01.2022 Today is World Cord Blood Day. In 2020, cord blood is saving lives in unexpected ways. Travel restrictions under the coronavirus pandemic have made it extremely difficult for adult bone marrow donors and couriers to travel for transplantation. Frozen cord blood has become a vital back-up source of blood forming stem cells for people who need them. Cord blood is used in the treatment of leukaemia and other blood cancers, certain types of anaemia, and other conditions. Cord blood collection has recommenced in Melbourne, having paused due to the complications and risks of COVID-19. Today, we celebrate the role public cord blood banks playboth in normal times and during global emergencies. Read our guide to cord blood donation:

10.01.2022 Meet our 2020 Metcalf Prize winners: Dr Melanie Eckersley-Maslin from Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre believes the proteins which control the growth of cells in embryos could teach us how to stop the uncontrolled growth of cells in cancer. Associate Professor Steven Lane from QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute wants to lift the survival rates of his leukaemia patients. He thinks the key could lie in the genetic fingerprints of the blood cancer stem cells that prolife...rate the disease. They each receive a $55,000 prize in recognition of their research achievements and leadership. Congratulations Melanie and Steven! https://www.stemcellfoundation.net.au/2020_metcalf_prizes See more

07.01.2022 "Ultimately my goal, as a clinician scientist, is to develop novel drugs that improve the outcomes for patients with cancer," says Professor Mark Dawson from Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre Mark sees patients with the aggressive blood cancer acute myeloid leukaemia. He's developing new drugs to improve survival rates. In 2017, he won our Metcalf Prize for Stem Cell Research. Last night he was named the winner of the 2020 Frank Fenner Prize for Life Scientist of the Year as part of the Prime Minister's Prizes for Science. Mark is also a veski Innovation Fellow and an elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences. @Congratulations Mark!
