11.01.2022 Revising Term 1 letters. Preparing kids for school entrance exams and Kindergarten. We sometimes get asked why we don’t teach letters alphabetically? Put simply, teaching letter/sound links in alphabetical order is of little help when teaching children to read. If we follow the order of the alphabet, most children revert back to the name of the letter rather than the sound it makes. Fundamentally, the premise is that letter/sound links that will allow children to start readi...ng words, should be taught first. 03.01.2022 ~Exploring The Five Senses~ This week we are exploring the sense of sight ~Observation and memory~ First, students had to observe and study the items in front of them (which they took very seriously, judging by how closely they looked at them). The items were then taken away and the students had to recall as many as they could. This isn’t as easy as it seems for little minds as their memory spans are still quite limited. Games like this can help children develop memory and... improve attention and focus. ~Peripheral vision~ Students had to observe the items, one at a time, with one eye covered, then alternate eyes. After inspecting the items, students had to uncover both eyes and view them fully, comparing the sense of sight through one eye and two eyes. ~Magnification~ Lastly, the students used a magnifying glass to observe the items one at a time. While we have put our Pre-Kindy classes on hold due to health and safety concerns surrounding COVID-19, a lot of parents have been asking us for worksheets and activities, particularly to help prepare kids for upcoming school entrance exams. We understand that at the current time parents are not sending their children to school and that academic learning, for the time being, will be taking place at home. We also understand the a...nticipation and stress that may come with preparing your child for school. In light of this, we have decided to introduce our school-readiness pack which has been designed to teach children to identify/write letters and numbers, write their name and learn their shapes/colours. The pack is priced at $70 and is reusable, time and time again. The pack includes: - Name book - Alphabet book - Handwriting book - Number book - Shapes and colours book - Alphabet and colours peg matching activity The peg activity is one we have used in our Pre-Kindy classes and is designed to strengthen fine motor skills and promote cognitive development as children use their thinking skills to identify, find and match letters and colours. While the school-readiness pack does not substitute interactive and beneficial learning in a classroom environment, it definitely addresses academic and developmental learning- a balance of which we like to implement in our Pre-Kindy classes. Our aim here is to encourage preschoolers to continue learning from home, particularly those starting school next year. We miss our Pre-K students’ smiles and enthusiasm.
