25.01.2022 I ABSOLUTELY LOVE BEING AN ARTIST! The creative side of being an artist is SO much fun!! But I have found that as I've focused on more of the 'business' side of things over the last few years, I have lost touch with being creative and having crazy fun with makeup When setting goals for 2020 I realised I wanted this year to stand for something. I did some deep thinking about what was important to me, what I'm passionate about and what makes my heart flutter. I decide...d I wanted 2020 to be about: Reconnection with my creative and spiritual side Not taking my health and ability for granted In October last year, I was a part of a photoshoot that connected me with some incredible local creatives. We bonded over our passion for being creative, commitment to a project and the desire to do more When the current situation we're in has run its course, I can't WAIT to get back together with this amazing bunch and create our next project! #essmakeup #stepbyESS #makeupartistlaburywodonga

25.01.2022 THE JOY OF MAKEUP - I have always struggled with the idea that I'm a makeup artist but I don't like wearing LOTS of makeup. Sometimes I feel like that makes me a fraud. - But I didn't fall in love with makeup to wear lots of it, I fell in love with it because of its ability to enhance who a person IS.... If you love your eyes, lips, bone structure, ANY feature, there is a product to enhance it. If you love being creative or taking a risk, adding a POP of colour is scary but can DEFINE you! - I also love that it's adaptable to any situation or mood. When I feel like wearing a little, I'll pop on products that leave my skin fresh, dewy and flushed. But if I have a special occasion I can 'go the whole hog' and apply eyeliner, lashes, EVERYTHING! - It's because of this that I love teaching my 3-hour makeup lessons. 22.01.2022 SILVER LINING - Let's be real, this isolation thing has impacted all of us in one way or another. And it's been tough! - I have missed having clients through the studio (like the beautiful human pictured ) and the 'want to jump up and down, scream with excitement' feeling I get when I send someone off to their special occasion with a beaming smile on their face ... - But in saying all of that, today I am thankful for YOU - Despite all of the uncertainty and chaos, I've been able to connect with you and share my passion with you. 21.01.2022 I HAVE A CONFESSION TO MAKE.. I DO NOT look like this everyday. Far from it actually. This look took an hour to do, hundreds of dollars of product and skills I’ve developed over 10 years But this is not what I look like on the daily! ... When the virus that shall not be named is not disrupting things, I have a 9-5, a beautiful family I like to spend quality time with, a couple of kiddies running around week on/week off and I invest time and energy into my health and fitness as well as running this business so time is not something I have a lot of And I’m guessing neither do you. And that’s why as much as I love showing you the images of clients and brides and all of their beautiful faces, I do want to shift gears a little bit and get back to the roots of why I love makeup I went out for dinner last night and had 15 minutes to get ready (shower and all) so I whacked on a light weight foundation, some blush and a highlighter and I felt great! I didn’t need the whole shebang to feel that way and I don’t want you to think you have to either! Part of my mission statement is: .. to empower women to feel confident in any situation, regardless of age, demographic or experience, through the use and application of makeup. So as much as there will be lots of aching over it not being ‘perfect’ I want to bring you guys less polished content. I want to show you more relatable, real and raw content that you can apply to your everyday life I am obviously still available for makeover/bridal bookings because I love nothing more than helping you all get ready for those special moments. And please know that I am proud of the level of professionalism I bring to my business and client experience so that will never be compromised. 18.01.2022 LET'S TALK SERUMS FOR A SEC Now I'm no skin expert but I do know the benefits of investing in a good serum not just for personal use but for preparing clients skin for their makeup application I find that most people think serums are just expensive liquids that don't seem to do much anyway in the way of improving skin.... But that couldn't be further from the truth The difference between a serum and a moisturiser is that moisturiser improves the skin at a surface level (which is great for the stuff you can see) but serum penetrates to the deeper layers of the skin for a long term solution to your skin concerns This is why using the two together are the ULTIMATE skincare duo Here's what you NEED TO KNOW about serums (skin experts maybe skip over this bit, my lack of technical language will make you cringe! ): They are expensive because they are a 'concentrate' that target specific skin concerns e.g. anti-ageing, dehydration, congestion When you apply them, it feels like they 'disappear' because they are penetrating below the surface of the skin into the deeper layers to assist the skin at a deeper level It will take at least 6-8 weeks of consistent use for you to see the full benefits of a serum because it works at such a deep level I've been using the @lancomeofficial Advanced Genefique Anti-Aging serum on and off for 10 years and give it credit for my skins smooth texture, the perfect surface for applying makeup I also consider it one of the secret weapons in my kit for a long-lasting makeup application If you use a serum and LOVE IT please share! 17.01.2022 PRE-ISO This beautiful face was the last one I got to work my magic on before everything was put on hold I know I had a lot of goals for this year and I was really excited about what was ahead in terms of my aspirations, my family, my health and fitness and my finances ... Safe to say I've gone back to the drawing (or inspo) board to pivot 2020's goals more than a couple of times. And I flip-flop between finding this either inspiring or frustrating but today I'm feeling good so I'm going to roll with it! SO! Couple of things I plan to implement when things go back to 'normal': stop rushing, start prioritising make the time to try new things If there are any habits you'd like to introduce or keep in place once your world goes back to 'normal' please share them in the comments! 11.01.2022 THE MOMENTUM IS GROWING It’s been 6 months since I decided to close off appointments for Ess Makeup but I don’t think it’ll be long before they reopen I have been taking minimal booking because I wanted to prioritise brides that have booked me for their special day and to be able to honour bookings that had to be postponed from earlier in the year but I tell you want, I miss painting all of your beautiful faces!! ... At this stage I am still only taking minimal bookings and have very limited availability but I want to let you in on a little secret I’ve been busy planning and collaborating with some wonderful local businesses during this time and have some very exciting things in the works When I do open the books back up, there will be an exisiting new service available. 11.01.2022 HELLO 2021!! Happy New Year!!! Wow! What a ride 2020 was It was a unique experience for all I'm sure. And I think it's safe to say we all experienced unexpected highs and lows but now we are in 2021, it's the year that was ... I was lucky enough to my world turned upside down in a way that made me acutely aware of what's important to me while also experiencing a lot of personal growth. So, I am taking my learnings and running with them (literally and figuratively)! 10.01.2022 THE ESS MAKEUP STUDIO I've been putting off showing you the studio because I haven't put the finishing touches on it. BUT! As a wise woman (looking at you Peta Stewart, Certified Practising Conveyancer ) put it to me, dialling down on the perfection isn't always a bad thing. So no, it's not 100% finished but I am so proud of the effort and patience that's gone into creating this space so far, it truly has taken a team ... Scott at David Hanckel Cabinets was so patient with me when putting together my vision. I credit my years in the makeup industry and finding the right cabinet maker to absolutely NAILING the look and functionality of this space My amazing partner supports every move I make and is always happy to talk things to death (as I tend to do when I'm inspired) with me. His input into the design of this space, including finding the perfect mirror and having Braybrook Engineering contribute to cabinetry, is so special to me. 10.01.2022 IT'S BEEN A HOT MINUTE But things are slowly getting back to normal Breakfast is at a respectable hour... Activewear has been replaced with 'normal' clothes Wearing makeup on the daily again And hair is back to being washed every other day As the light at the end of the tunnel feels as though it's moving close (rather than further away), it's nice to get back to a new 'normal'. It may not seem like a bit deal, but today I was thankful for being able to go get a spray tan. 07.01.2022 FINDING THE PERFECT RED LIP .. can be difficult! It's not until you're looking at swatches online or in the shop trying colours on that you think, "maybe there's more to this than I thought." Yes, it can take a little trial and error to find the perfect shade for you but omg is it worth it! There is something so empowering about nailing that red lip look ... TIPS WHILE SHOPPING: Be aware of your undertone by looking at the veins on the inside of your forearm - if they are mostly blue, you're cool; if they're mostly green, you're warm If you have a cool undertone, try blue, pink and berry toned reds; warm undertone, orange, red, burgundy tones will look schmiko! Where possible, try the lipstick on before purchasing TIPS WHILE WEARING: If you haven't worn a red lip before, try wearing around the house and get comfortable seeing yourself wearing it Avoid moisturising your lips with a balm before applying, this can lead to the lipstick 'bleeding' If lining the lips with a lipliner, try colouring the whole lip in so that if the lipstick comes off through the day, there is still some colour on the lips until you get the chance to reapply Have an amazing Tuesday and may the red-lip-force be with you! 04.01.2022 WHAT AN ABSOLUTE STUNNER! This beautiful lady had a special occasion on the weekend and I was lucky enough to be asked to help her get ready for it As I do with every client, especially if it’s our first occasion getting her ready, I ask a lot of ‘open ended’ questions to suss out:... what her day-to-day makeup routine looks like what her makeup routine looks like when she has a special occasion on when was a time she looked and felt her most beautiful (pictures encouraged) And asking her these questions yesterday reminded of something The biggest mistake a makeup artist can make is to project our own answer, preferences and experiences onto our clients or worse yet, assume we know what they’re want or what’s best We, us humans, are so incredibly diverse and our unique qualities are not only what make us interesting, they make us US! So if you’re ever in the chair, about to have your makeup done, don’t be too shy to share things like: what your favourite feature is that you want to look ‘BANGIN’ for your special occasion or that you want to try something new/different but your nervous to do it Because the more we know about you, the better we can do our job and help you feel like the most glamorous version of you!
