25.01.2022 Research carried out using records from the Western Australian Register for Autism Spectrum Disorders confirms that motor challenges are way more common in people with autism than people have thought. 25.01.2022 Interesting read from the APA! If you are worried about your child's motor milestones please contact us for an assessment and advice on how to help them enjoy gross motor play and get the most out of their bodies! #choosephysio

21.01.2022 Introducing Lisa Cargeeg, private practice representative for the Paediatric Physiotherapy Service Network of WA!

21.01.2022 But what is #torticollis and #plagiocephaly ???? Plagiocephaly is an asymmetrical flattening of the baby’s head or flat spot. This can also be associated with asymmetry of the facial features and ears. Though the baby’s appearance is often concerning for parents plagiocephaly does not affect the development of the babies brain. Torticollis is a tightness of the neck muscles restricting the baby’s ability to turn to one side. Though most people first notice torticollis as a ...head turn preference it often also causes the baby’s head to tilt to one side. You may notice this as baby’s ear sitting closer to one shoulder when their head is in the midline. Plagiocephaly and torticollis are frequently but not always seen together. Both Plagiocephally and torticollis usually resolve with the implementation of some basic physiotherapy strategies like stretches and positioning. Sometimes plagiocephaly or torticollis are noticed from birth. This asymmetry is likely a result of the baby’s position in utero or their journey through the birth canal. In many cases this will be recognised by the midwife, child health nurse, hospital physiotherapist, or paediatrician in the baby’s first few days. They will recommend some exercises themselves or refer the baby to a paediatric physiotherapist. In other cases the asymmetry develops after the baby is born. In their first few months babies are still developing their head control. For the first few weeks even on their backs babies are unable to hold their heads in the midline andwhen held upright their heads often lean to one side. @ Step By Step Physiotherapy

20.01.2022 Loved meeting all our new yogi kids for our first classes last week . Next week we'll be exploring breathing in more depth and seeing how breathing can affect the way we feel

19.01.2022 Such a clever idea for a flag relay!

19.01.2022 Introducing... Lisa Cargeeg, Practice Director Qualifications: Bachelor of Applied Science (Physio) Curtin University Paediatric Experience: Lisa established Step by Step Physiotherapy in 2012. She has worked privately since 1996 and has over 30 years experience working as a physiotherapist at the Child Development Service, and at Princess Margaret and King Edwards Hospitals. Lisa is the private practise representative in the Perth Paediatric Physiotherapy Network and a mem...ber of the national paediatric branch of the Australian Physiotherapy Association. Special interests: Early Intervention, gentle and supportive development of early milestones. As the mother of 4 children herself, Lisa has substantial experience in providing practical advice and therapy strategies to families wanting to promote gross motor development of their baby or child within the context of busy family life. What do you love most about Paediatric Physio? I have always loved working with children, it is rewarding seeing them achieve milestones, and sharing their success with the parents. Working with babies and children has it’s challenges but it makes me more adaptable to the various little personalities, makes me creative in putting exercises into fun activities and guiding parents how they can be involved in doing some of these exercises in the day to day tasks.

19.01.2022 Guess what our physio Alison has been up to on her maternity leave... check out walky Talky baby for advice from Ali and Paediatric Speech Pathologist Chiara for supporting babies in their early years with speech and gross motor development.

18.01.2022 Really looking forward to attending the EDS conference tomorrow, which is the first Ehlers-Danlos Society conference to be held in Australia. All the latest up to date research and info not just on EDS but hyper-mobility as well from world experts in this field. I will be bringing it all back to use with our kiddos with EDS and/or hyper-mobility https://ehlers-danlos-society.regfox.com/2018-australia-con

18.01.2022 A lovely article about why milestones shouldn’t be parents’ only focus... if you’re worried about your child’s gross motor milestones please come and see a physio, don’t google it! So much that’s read online causes unnecessary stress. Please let a health care professional that’s an expert in child development help you work out whether or not being slow to reach a milestone is worth worrying about!

18.01.2022 As we all know, finding good and stylish shoes for Kids with CP is a constant challenge. If any of our families have any feedback to give, then please consider passing it on. See details below:

17.01.2022 This is exciting!

17.01.2022 Really nice easy to read blog from The Inspired Treehouse about toe walking. At Step by Step we frequently assess toddlers and children with different funny walks. If you have concerns about the way your child walks you don’t need a referral to come see a physio. We can advise on why your child is walking that way, how to treat it, and we can liaise with your GP or paediatrician if we suggest it’s necessary to see them too.

13.01.2022 Loving all these photos of multi-moments posted this week to celebrate multiple birth awareness week! Wishing all our little Step by Step multiples a very wonderful week!

13.01.2022 Hope everyone is surviving the first week back at school, been a few meltdowns at my house (and that's just me ) so trying to incorporate some deep breathing even if it's only for a minute can make all the difference for me to keep my cool with the kids (while simultaneously hiding in the laundry and sneaking a bit of chocolate ). For the kids, practising breathing techniques during class or at home when they are calm, really helps in those moments of emotional overwhelm fo...r them to self regulate. There are so many different ones to choose from, bunny breath, bear breath, dolphin breath, ocean breath, lion breath. My kids have now come up with their own version, "ice cheetah breath" which works a treat! Kids yoga is all about planting the seeds and giving kids tools and techniques to support their emotional and physical development. This term we will be exploring emotions and feelings and how we can use yoga, breathing and mindfulness to help regulate when we need to, energy, creativity, the art of observation and teamwork . Our 4-7 year old class is now FULL for this term but we still have spaces available in our 7-12 year old age group. Please get in touch ASAP if you would like to book in

13.01.2022 Yay! Im now also a certified teens yoga teacher after completing the 32 hours of teens training with Yoga Ed . Teens go through rapid and extensive physical and brain development during their adolescence. Yoga and Mindfulness activities can be hugely beneficial when done in a class setting or when incorporated one on one in physio sessions to enhance the mind body connection, improve flexibility, balance and strength for their changing and growing bodies, as well as provide the opportunity to focus, gain clarity, be calm and learn to relax. More importantly, Yoga supports social emotional learning and gives teens practical tools to take home off the mat . If you're interested in finding out more than please contact us #teensyoga #teens #teensyogaperth #socialemotionallearning #makingadifference.

13.01.2022 Happy World Physio Day! This year we are celebrating the key role in improving mental health through exercise. Australian Physiotherapy Association encourages all Australians (INCLUDING CHILDREN!) to view physical activity as a way of life, and value the positive difference it makes to our physical and mental health and wellbeing... At Step by Step we offer yoga classes for children. Yoga embeds social emotional learning (SEL) into exercise. Social emotional learning teaches children to center their mind and body, reduce emotional tension, and become learning ready. Recent research demonstrates students participating in in SEL can experience a range of benefits including - Improved academic performance - Reduced emotional distress - Increased self-awareness and self-management - Increased prosocial behaviors in school, - Improved positive attitudes toward self and others (Durlak, Weissberg, Dymnicki, Taylor, & Schellinger, 2011)

04.01.2022 Getting ready to hop, skip and jump our way through a rainy weekend!

04.01.2022 W sitting- always a controversial topic! At Step by Step we agree with these points by interviewed physiotherapist Marianne McCormick, the head of physiotherapy at Sydney Children's Hospital. * In many cases, W-sitting isn't much to worry about. But sometimes it can cause problems.... * Some children adopt this posture because they lack the strength and muscle control to support themselves in sitting. * W-sitting is common in kids who are really flexible, or hypermobile. *Physiotherapists would like to see the development of skills in lots of different positions. * It is unrealistic and unnecessary for parents to correct W-sitting every time. *If the in-turning of the hips becomes so severe that the child is falling over, it is best to seek a review with their GP or a paediatric physiotherapist.
