23.01.2022 Meet the Team! Emily Thornton, Psychologist Was there a particular reason you wanted to become a psychologist? Or event which sparked your interest? I have always been drawn to roles that involve working with and supporting children. I find their natural curiosity, immense vulnerability, resilience, honesty, and enthusiasm for play and knowledge to be something that I admire and learn a lot from. Throughout my formal schooling, I really enjoyed learning the science of psychol...ogy, and felt that a child psychologist would suit both my areas of interest perfectly. What do you enjoy most about being a psychologist? There are many things that I enjoy about being a psychologist, and working with young people. Foremost, I really enjoy supporting children to achieve their goals and empowering them and their families to reach their fullest potential. It is a humbling and rewarding feeling when you see progress in a child and are able to share that moment with them. I also enjoy working with other stakeholders within a child’s support network, engaging in professional development and supervision, and building connections and professional relationships with other allied health professionals. What are some of the things you enjoy doing outside of work? During my time outside of work, I typically enjoy being outdoors such as going for bush walks or spending a day at the beach with my dogs. I also enjoy baking, reading, listening to music, spending time with family and friends, and having movie nights at home with my partner. What do you enjoy about your role at SBSP? One of the things that I enjoy most about my role at SBSP, is the ability to work in a supportive, caring, and collaborative team environment. The work at SBSP is also very wide-ranging, and affords me the opportunity to work with many diverse client presentations. I am also really lucky to work with many wonderful families, who make my job at SBSP more enjoyable and rewarding.

23.01.2022 Amongst all of the negative of COVID, we have seen so many positives! Thanks for sharing Kids Helpline Official. How did COVID impact your life in a positive way?

22.01.2022 We had a fantastic live webinar last night with Kid Link Occupational Therapy and Step by Step Psychology with lots of practical tips about school readiness. We... absolutely loved getting this feedback after the event (especially given it is so hard with online events to see the audience) "I’d like to say "Thank you" to Jackie, Lauren and Cara for hosting a very (!!) informative and insightful webinar. I’m feeling a little more at ease about my son and his being ready for school next year. The information and tips each professional provided are invaluable. I made a tonne of notes and now feel better equipped to guide my son over the next few months, to support him on his journey to starting school. Thank you very much, ladies! Thank you for your time, expertise and most of all your heart. Your love of your jobs shone through. It has inspired me to step up my(mum) game.

22.01.2022 Maybe its a walk in the sunshine? or simply enjoying a quiet moment with a cup of tea?

21.01.2022 Now that we are allowed out and about in Melbourne, check out these fun activities for families.

20.01.2022 Although restrictions across Melbourne have lifted, Step by Step Psychology will be continuing with online Telehealth appointments. We will be in touch with clients when we are able to see clients in the clinic for face to face appointments.

19.01.2022 RESOURCE THAT WE LOVE! Puppets We love using roleplay in our sessions to practise various social skills and coping tools. On Telehealth, we have been using puppets to tell stories, practise social skills, ask questions, share big feelings or be silly. Using the puppets helps to normalise common feelings in a non-confronting way.

18.01.2022 MEET THE TEAM! Ellie Fabbri, Psychologist Was there a particular reason you wanted to become a psychologist? Or event which sparked you interest? Growing up, I always wanted to work with children and help them reach their fullest potential. I am passionate about working with young people and their families and feel very lucky that I have the privilege of working with such amazing families and young people every day, who share their successes and challenges with me.... What do you enjoy most about being a psychologist? There are so many things I enjoy about being a child psychologist. I really love when interventions work and you see a child or teenager blossom and feel empowered, when children and parents embrace and celebrate their differences, when you can get to the bottom of why a child is having difficulty learning, and collaborating with not only families but also other allied health professionals to get the best out of every child. What are some of the things you enjoy doing outside of work? Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, cooking, and walking my dog. Is there anything you are looking forward in the coming months? I’m looking forward to continuing to work with my clients and support their families. It certainly has been a challenging year for everyone. I hope to continue to support my clients and help to navigate them through the ongoing changes and upcoming transitions. What do you enjoy about your role at SBSP? At SBSP, we are lucky to have a supportive team who all care deeply for our clients and their families. I love that every day is different at SBSP - some days I’m working with adolescents, or young children and other days I get to work with parents so there’s lots of variety. Do you have any favourite quotes or anecdotes you would like to share? A favourite quote of mine is: Reach for the moon. Even if you fall short, you’ll land among the stars. I love this quote because it’s a nice reminder that even if you don’t reach your original goal, you can still achieve amazing things and have learnt valuable skills along the way. It’s important to remind children to celebrate even the small wins in life!

17.01.2022 Did you attend our School Readiness webinar last week? Step by Step Psychologist, Cara Small had a few tips on how to help children who are anxious or have lots of worries. Remindables have summed up this advice beautifully.
