BC’s are most prevalent in patients with preexisting intra-articular knee joint pathology such as arthritis (degenerative or inflammatory) or internal derangement (meniscal or ACL tears, loose bodies, etc). Although BC’s are most frequently asymptomatic, they may cause posterior knee pain, joint stiffness, and reduced range of motion. BC’s may rupture and cause acute leg pain and swelling, mimicking deep venous thrombosis. The differential diagnosis includes ganglion and other benign cysts, popliteal artery aneurysms, as well as malignant tumors like synovial sarcomas. It is critical to demonstrate the MSK #ultrasound characteristics of a BC to establish a diagnosis and differentiate it from other potential etiologies.
