12.01.2022 Camp Hill Healthcare offer something a little different in a local GP clinic as they have an in house pharmacist Dr Freeman (PhD) is passionate about providing a bridge between chronic and acute care, and helped pioneer a role for pharmacists in general practice. Ten years ago, he took matters into his own hands when he approached Dr Ian Williams, a GP at Camp Hill Healthcare in Brisbane, and they decided to dip their toes in. Now his role at the practice is well establish...ed and he has formalised the model of practice by putting in place a research framework to measure the benefits. https://www.ausdoc.com.au/news/meet-new-president-psa
11.01.2022 Observatory Restaurant, Whites Hill Lookout, Camp Hill. Here we have the restaurant that once sat at the top of todays Whites Hill Lookout. Sadly there is very ...little information about this lookout. I cant find when it was built and when it was removed. An article from 1930 indicates that Brisbane City Council had carried out a number of improvements for motorists and pedestrians, while also in the process of employing a resident caretaker. It appears in the 1936 aerial photographs, but by the 1946 batch there is just a stain on the ground of where the building once stood. Over the years the site has been reclaimed back to nature and a walking track now exists where the road once travelled. What was once a lookout is now mainly views through trees. 11.01.2022 While property prices around Australia have been falling of late, Brisbanes trend has eased significantly with a -1.9% drop, as compared to Sydney and Melbourne markets at -10.9%. Even in a difficult market, Brisbane is a logical choice! With yesterdays RBA announcement and the stabilisation of other key factors which influence the housing market, economists are predicting that things will improve over the next 12 months. Its a buyers market!
11.01.2022 With the Government slowly lifting restrictions, one of our favourite Camp Hill Thai restaurants Mons Ban Sabai Thai has announced it will be reopening, limiting to 10 patrons at a time. I am sure we will see this great community rally even more to support our local businesses. For a full list of restaurants who have announced their reopening, see the link here: https://www.broadsheet.com.au//whats-reopening-brisbane-we
10.01.2022 City View, Belmont Tramway, Camp Hill Here we are today in Camp Hill looking towards where the City View Station once was that formed part of the Belmont Tramwa...y. Now to start from the beginning The Tramways Act of 1882 gave local councils in Queensland the power to build railways which did not compete with Queensland Rail. For legal reasons they had to be called tramways instead of railways. Belmont Shire Council proposed the construction of a tramway and requested an engineering report for the cost of building it. In the end they built a 6.9km tramway that spurred off the Cleveland Railway Line between Norman Park Railway Station and Morningside Railway Station. The line has station shelters at Belmont Junction, Seven Hills, Mount Bruce, City View, Mayfield Road and Carina, while it also had stations with goods facilities at Springfield and the terminus a Belmont. The line cost 20,000 and opened on May 25th 1912. Initially it was run by Queensland Rail until Belmont Shire Council acquired its own steam tram, a Baldwin b/n 35935 of 1911 and 3 carriages. Its max speed was 15 mph (24 kmph) with a limit of 10 mph (16 kmph) over bridges. The line was expensive to operate and all services were suspended in 1915, which at this time the tram and carriages were sold off. Due to local demand, the line was reopened and run by Queensland Railways on behalf of Belmont Shire Council until April 16th 1924. Services were again suspended, this time due to the condition of the bridges. The locomotives permitted to operate on the line were the A12, A14, B13, B15 and PB15 class. The line reopened again in April 1925, but this time by Brisbane City Council as the Belmont Shire had been amalgamated into the City Of Brisbane. This was short lived though as Brisbane City Council wasnt interested in running the tramway at a loss and finally closed it in October 1926. In 1948, 664 meters of track bed along old Cleveland Road became part of Brisbane City Councils electric tram route 06. (Valley - Belmont) The Brisbane Tramway system closed down for good in 1969 and while there have been many proposals to bring trams back to Brisbane, none have eventuated. A small section of heritage listed track remains uncovered in Carina. That can be seen in this recent post... https://www.facebook.com/1945423115710109/posts/2191625797756505?sfns=mo In recent times the state government have planned to construct a mostly underground busway from University Of Queensland in Saint Lucia to Capalaba with an intersection on the South East Busway. the first section opened in 2009 connecting UQ Lakes to Buranda Station via the Eleanor Schonell green bridge. The next section opened in 2011 and extended the line from Buranda Station and terminated in Langands Park. The next station is built but not connected to the network as the tunnels have not been constructed. That station is the busway station under Coorparoo Square and can be seen as it is uncovered in the current Google satellite imagery. Future stations will be built in suburbs such as Coorparoo, Camp Hill, Carina, Carindale, Chandler and Capalaba. The exposed track in Carina does pose some difficulty due to its heritage listing. The initial designs showed the busway built on top of this section, but Ive recently been informed that it may have changed and they may tunnel underneath. Recently I have been researching the Wilbur Smith & Associates Freeway proposals of the 1960s and I was surprised to find out that one of the Eastern Freeway alignments (one most recommended) was due to roughly follow the alignment of the former tramway. There were in fact multiple alternate proposals, one that aligned itself with Wynnum Road and another with Old Cleveland Road with multiple variations to both. I believe they chose Old Cleveland Road as they built the Freeway overpass that connects to Carindale Shopping Centre. So had that highway been built, this photograph would have needed to be taken from a busy highway. This alignment that I speak of would have originated east of the Gabba between Vulture and Stanley Streets where it would have intercepted with the Central Freeway. It would have then travelled east through Wembley Park in Coorparoo in a straight line before connecting with Old Cleveland Road where the road kinks. From there I cant be sure if it would have been built on top and replacing Old Cleveland Road or beside it, but going by what has already been built (such as the South East Freeway), it would have been built beside and resulting in Old Cleveland Road being somewhat of a service road. I hope to post more about these Freeway proposals such as maps and artists impressions, including streetscapes that never came to be, that I have already sourced by visiting the John Oxley Library. The only hurdle now is to gain permission from the Department of Transport and Main Roads as they are copyrighted to them. I shouldnt see an issue as I do not profit from this and they are available to everyone if they book to view the documents at the John Oxley Library. So if the person that can give said permission is reading this, feel free to inbox me. (Taken: 1921/2019) (Source: SLQ/John Prpic) (Follow us on Instagram - passing.time.qld) See more
