25.01.2022 Happy NAIDOC WEEK! This week, 8th 15th November, we join that nation to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Stra...it Islander peoples. The annual celebration is usually held in July but was unfortunately postponed due to the pandemic. This year’s theme ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’ recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. We encourage all encourage all non-Indigenous people to continue to learn about the history and achievements of Australia’s First Nations people. Check out this week’s events at https://www.naidoc.org.au/get-involved/naidoc-week-events #NAIDOCWeek2020

25.01.2022 Tips to stay safe online

24.01.2022 COME TOGETHER Along with the holiday season, another sweet delivery is upon us. Chocolates are arriving by the pallet load, generously donated to Addison Road C...ommunity Organisation by Heinemann Tax & Duty Free (Sydney). A bunch of charities and community organisations are visiting our Food Relief Hub daily to pick up boxes of quality sweets and get them out to their communities. Vans and cars are parked in a zig-zag pattern on the green outside Gumbramorra Hall. OzHarvest have sent a refrigerated truck to get as many boxes as they can. The Exodus Foundation are doing a pick up. Youth Off The Streets are here. Rough Edges. Metro Assist. Kinchela Boys Home Aboriginal Corporation. The Community Restorative Centre (CRC) from Canterbury A ute is being steadily stacked with boxes by Mo Bloomfield. He works as a social worker at Yudi Gunyi School, a special ed high school in Waterloo. Mo says that it used to be known as Green Square School, but after consulting with the local indigenous community they came up with Yudi Gunyi, which basically means ‘place of learning’. A lot of high schools in the inner city and across the City of Sydney end up referring students to Yudi Gunyi School. There’s often trauma or difficulties in the background of the students that come to us, Mo says. But at Yudi Gunyi when a student enrols, we are able to offer wrap-around health services for both the students and the parents. We have a psychologist, an occupational therapist, a paediatrician, a speech pathologist, an art therapist, specialist teachers It’s supported by the Gonski Institute. It’s the first place of its kind in the state. I love it, Mo says, and you can feel the energy in his words when he says them. Just the connection to community. A lot of my role as a social worker is about developing links between community groups. And helping students too when they move on after school with alternative education or pathways into careers. Yudi Gunyi is just so unique and multi-disciplinary in its approach. It’s a really special place. Mo is thrilled to come along today and get boxes of chocolates for the Christmas hampers that Yudi Gunyi School will be putting together for its students and their families. There’s a need for more than just basics, he observes. Food is about so much more than just survival. It connects to well-being and mental health and staying positive. Special treats like this, Mo says, hitting the side of one of the boxes, contribute to allowing families to flourish and have some normalisation of their lives. In the wake of Covid-19, Mo has seen people that were doing it tough find themselves doing it even tougher. This often impacts on kids more than anyone else. Food security and something extra like some chocolates in a hamper can change the whole mood of a family’s life. It’s just amazing, he says, placing one last box on the tray of his ute. It’s really inspiring to come here to Addi Road and feel there is so much hope in the community. It’s not just the food being offered, it’s the extra things like these chocolates or just saying to people ‘hey how are you going?’ "Coming here and seeing what is happening and getting these boxes, it’s great to get it, of course. But it’s also about seeing what is going on here and passing that along. It’s a beautiful story to tell all our families. To let them know the community is coming together. + YOU can donate to Addison Road Community Organisation’s food relief and food security programs here: https://addiroad.org.au/donations/donate-now/

18.01.2022 The most beautiful people we have known are those who have known defeat, known suffering, known struggle, known loss, and have found their way out of the depth...s. These persons have an appreciation, a sensitivity, and an understanding of life that fills them with compassion, gentleness, and a deep loving concern. Beautiful people do not just happen. 13.01.2022 There is freedom beyond abuse - its time to talk! FREE webinar on understanding impacts of childhood sexual abuse on 25th June. Stepping Out Program supports women who are survivors of childhood sexual abuse to live in the community. We are running a webinar on Zoom on 25th June to provide a safe and supported space to gain a deeper understanding of the impacts of CSA and trauma by listening to the lived experience of a survivor, the awesome Rene Michele. We hope this will ...open discussion, reduce stigma, shift shame/blame, identify barriers and ultimately deliver the possibility of transformation. The session will also include an intro and Q&A with Julie Blyth, a specialist clinician of CSA and trauma. Being Zoom, you can be as anonymous or as engaged as your comfort levels allow. Register your interest on the link in the picture or call 95696512. 12% of women in Australia identify as having been sexually abused before the age of 15 and average time to disclose is 20 years. Feel free to share this to anyone you think may benefit from this free forum xx https://steppingout.org.au/csa-survivor-zoom-webinar/

Thanks to Inner West Council for its progressive stance - it was voted in unanimously! If you tuned in to our Inner West Council meeting on 4 August, youll have heard Melissa Holmes of Stepping Out Program speak in support of my motion on domestic and family violence. Melissa joined my fellow Councillor Colin Hesse - Greens on his Radio Skid Row 88.9FM show this week to talk about why Councils work in this space is so important, and the pressures facing women, children and critical support services like hers during COVID-19. 05.01.2022 Timely and important information from Blue Knot Foundation, peak body for survivors of childhood trauma, on the challenges of wearing a face mask in accordance with COVID-19 measures. Masks can trigger trauma for CSA and DV survivors by having mouth covered and also not being able to read other peoples faces. There are great tips herein on why we should persevere and how we can manage those panicky feelings. If you really cant wear a mask, best to socially isolate at the moment as COVID-19 numbers are beginning to build in Sydney. Take care and reach out to us if you need
