14.01.2022 Today is international PANS/ PANDAS awareness day! If your child has experienced a sudden change in their behaviour or skill level, it could be due to a little known neuro-immune condition called PANDAS/ PANS. PANDAS/PANS is a treatable medical condition that is all too often misdiagnosed as a psychiatric disorder. If the child is correctly diagnosed, there are very effective medical treatments available (including antibiotics or steroids). Many children will go on to make ...a full and complete recovery with the correct treatment. Left too long and the condition is much harder to treat. We see a number of children with PANDAS/ PANS in our clinic, and our Director Michelle is currently undertaking a PhD looking into the developmental challenges experienced by children with PANDAS/ PANS. If you are worried that your child might have PANDAS/PANS please speak with your GP. If your GP hasn't heard about PANDAS/PANS, then please speak with us and we can point you in the right direction to get the correct treatment. The video clip below has some great information about what happens within the brain of a child with PANS/ PANDAS. Take a moment to check it out. #PANS #PANDAS #PANSPANDAS #Neuroimmune #OccupationalTherapy #NewcastleNSW #lakemacquarie #NewyKids #Newymums https://www.youtube.com/watch

14.01.2022 Welearning! The Stepping Stones OTs have just spent a full day together learning new ways to improve our practice. We do this every school holiday's so that we can keep up to date with best practice and support your children more fully. First up, we had the very clever OT Beatrice and OT Tiarne speak about interoception and ways we can support children to develop this foundational sense.... We then had the very brilliant OT Karen Ray speak with us about the development of handwriting fluency. She also took us through a very cool handwriting assessment she is developing through her PhD work at the University of Newcastle. OT Michelle spoke about innovative ways to support play development in babies. We then had the lovely Fiona Quinn-Dezelak from Harmony Speech Pathology join us via zoom. She shared her wealth of knowledge about speech development in children. And last (but certainly not least!) we had OT Debbie Scarfe come to speak with us all the from Viva Kinect in Taree. She took us through a beautiful mindfulness practice, and then taught us about a very fascinating treatment technique called QST Massage and the benefits of this therapy for children with autism. Tendai even got to test it out and it was a big thumbs up from him Days like this are so inspiring and we are grateful to our colleagues the broader therapy community for supporting our learning #lifelonglearning#fullbrain#bestteam#evidencebasedpractice#interoception#handwriting#infantdevelopment#speechdevelopment#qstmassage

05.01.2022 **TOUCH SENSITIVITY** So many of the children we see in clinic have touch sensitivity (or what OT's refer to as tactile hypersensitivity). Children with touch sensitivity experience touch very differently to others. Sensations like tags can literally feel like having a cactus in the back of your shirt *ouch*! ... Other tricky sensations for kids with touch sensitivity can include seams in socks or clothes, having bandaids on the skin, walking on sand or grass without shoes on, putting sunscreen on, wearing hats, the sensation of sheets when you're trying to get to sleep, wearing certain clothes, having the wind blow against your skin, having your hair brushed, the list goes on and on... While most kids are able to "tune out" these types of sensations and get on with their day, kids with touch sensitivity will be constantly feeling the annoying touch sensation. They will be distracted by this and even sometimes becoming really irritated by this annoying feeling. This can interrupt daily tasks and can also cause behavioural outbursts that seem to come from nowhere. Kids with touch sensitivity are often misunderstood, with their outbursts and distractibility seen as a behavioural issue by the adults around them. This can impact on a child's self esteem! It's so important that these children's challenges are understood by the adults around them, and that they have strategies to support their sensory challenges. If you have a child with touch sensitivities, please chat with your OT about strategies to help. We also really love Carol Kranowitz's book "The Out-of-Sync Child". It's a perfect starting place for parents who have kids with sensory challenges.
