25.01.2022 Great to have Martin Vo down from Ground Level for some sparring rounds today in the lead up to Diamondback Fighting Championship / APEX Sport FEST - such an valuable opportunity to train with different bodies. Truth be known, I’m a bit of a slut with who I’ll train with. If anyone else preparing for this card wants to get some training in, message me SA Judo Academy... 24.01.2022 Throw back to six years ago- training at Yong In University - Korea, prior to the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Fingers strapped together, half a roll of toilet paper up the nose, tape holding ankles together. With 48 Olympic medals, Yong In Universiry does not accept mediocrity. I love MMA, but preparing for an MMA fight is like Contiki compared to the international Judo circuit.... Those who know, know.

22.01.2022 So excited to be back in the gym from Monday. If you have wanted to get into training there has never been a better time or better deal

22.01.2022 One thing I am passionate about is mental health. Most of us know that 6 of 8 people who commit suicide today will be men. Many of us have also heard that 1 in 8 men will experience depression and 1 in 5 will experience anxiety. Men are also twice as likely to have substance abuse issues. What I refuse to believe is that men are just ‘wired wrong’. For many, there are direct, fixable reasons that contribute to mental health issues. One of the biggest elephants in the ro...om is our farcical Family Court system. While the ‘Company Line’ is that fathers and mothers are treated the same, here are some actual government stats: 83% of mothers have sole or majority care. Only 9% of parents have equal custody and 7% of fathers have majority or sole care. If parents cannot reach an agreement regarding custody, the most likely judicial determination is to award sole parental responsibility to the mother (45.1%). Family Court is an inherently sexist system, which treats dads like second class citizens and breaks men. I can’t fix this. What I do know though, is while this is often the catalyst for mental health problems, what follows is the fuel on the fire. Isolation from old friends and family, financial ruin and a downward health spiral. Many men find it hard to talk and find solace at the bottom of the bottle. I don’t expect you to talk to me, I know it is not that easy (but if you want to talk, I am all ears). I want to offer dad’s an alternative- a place to make new friends, surround themselves with positive people, exercise, learn new skills and forget their worries for a few hours. I also know that between being extorted for legal fees and pillaged during property settlement, many dads legitimately can’t put food on their table, let alone think about paying for something to help themselves. If you are a dad going through Family Court and finding things tough, contact me. I have 5 unlimited access training passes to our gym and martial arts program for $7 a week. Unfortunately I can’t help everyone, so there is a few conditions that go along with this. If you know of someone who may be interested, please share #Itsoktonotbeok #fuckthesystem #dadsmatter

21.01.2022 Leaked footage of me training outdoors when the gyms were closed.

21.01.2022 I can point you in the direction of somewhere that’s cheaper, or a place that has a reputation for easy grades; but if that’s not for you then this might be. There are lots of great places to learn martial arts in SA, but if you’re wanting to learn Judo, there is only one real option

20.01.2022 Cheers to the crew at Diamondback Fighting Championship for the snippet from my last fight, wicked song choice too If you’ve got kids with too much energy, or perhaps need a confidence booster, I run a kids MMA class Thursday’s at 5pm, new kids always welcome SA Judo Academy... 14.01.2022 Warning long post- I am the head coach of the South Australian Judo Academy- one of the largest clubs in the county and have been the South Australian Judo State Coach for the last 3 years. I have coached several athletes to represent Australia at a Senior and Junior level. I am also South Australia’s only ever Judo Olympian, Commonwealth Games athlete and was selected to represent Australia at 4 Senior World Championships.... In 65 years, I am one of only 6 South Australians to have won a Senior Australian Judo title, and the only one who is currently coaching. In my time as State Coach I have worked hard to increase participation, and it is now at the highest level it has been for ten years. At the end of 2020 I reapplied for this position and was just told via telephone call with Jason Polgreen (JudoSA President) that the JudoSA board had voted to endorse Tony Barks as State Coach at the recommendation of the coaching committee (which Tony is a member of). Tony Barks is the former Judo coach of the now defunct Platinum Judo Club which fizzled out several years ago. He no longer runs a club. Tony never had a career as a senior Judo competitor and has never coached an athlete to senior success. Tony has been a Junior State Coach in the past, and in his final year the team’s entry numbers plummeted to just 2 athletes. Jason has done Judo for a very short time and is a member of the smallest club in the State. By Jason’s own admission, he does not know Tony Barks, nor the history surrounding our State Team; yet confirmed he felt he was in a position to vote with the endorsement. For not the first time in his short tenure, Jason has found himself in a position where he is well out of his depth. The JudoSA Board and Coaching committee has lost credibility over the past 18 months, which culminated in my resignation from it in August last year. The Board is focused on selfish, intrinsic goals to serve themselves and is failing in its primary mission- to serve their members. I have been involved in South Australian Judo for 28 years and have seen our Board repeatedly fall into rubble and have to be rebuilt from the ground up; if allowed, the current Board are well on their way to achieving the same feat. Our athletes will ultimately be the ones punished by these decisions. Regardless whether you’re involved with Judo or not, if you follow my page you have an interest in the development of martial artists and I hope you support these aspiring athletes. Please share away

10.01.2022 An organisation like Judo SA is what happens when that weird kid you went to school with who had no friends, teams up with someone else just like them and they vote each other into a position of power. They become bullies. Judo SA were presented with just two candidates for the role of state coach. In a process which can only be labelled as corrupt or incompetent, management looked over the most experienced coach in the state for one that could not even meet the very minimal... criteria. By the Presidents own admission, he did not even know the person he voted for. The entire Judo knowledge of the Judo SA board could be written on the sides of a matchbox carton, with room to spare. Yet, they continue to make important sport specific decisions which will have a detrimental affect on junior athletes for many years to come. These junior athletes are too young to stand up for themselves and vote out those playing games with their future. I no longer have any interests or ties to the SA State Team, but it is the obligation of everyone who does have a voice to stand up for those who do not have one. https://www.facebook.com/1824232427797708/posts/2868660736688200/?d=n

07.01.2022 Danaher dropping some truth bombs. If you never train stand up, you practice a sport, not fighting, or self defence. Don't get me wrong, that's 100% ok, but own it.

07.01.2022 When I first wanted to do MMA I asked around where I could train and was told you basically had to go to individual arts and then try and piece it together. 3 or 4 of us would meet up at a dodgey shed in Pooraka and knock the snot out of each other, with no real idea what we were doing. Fast forward to my first few fights, which I prepared for overseas to train at the level I wanted to, followed by the next few which were heavily based interstate. Now I am so lucky to be ab...le to train at home, in a world class facility, with a pack of animals, all pushing each other to get better. A special shout out to Scott, Rob, Mohammed & Lambos who put their hands up and bodies in for hard MMA rounds, with no fights of their own booked, and didn’t even get in the pic. Not all heroes wear capes.

06.01.2022 Being able to train hard and find out what your body is capable of is a privilege that is denied to many and wasted by many more. Plenty of good work getting done tonight, tomorrow we go again SA Judo Academy... Technicians Thaiboxing Element Jiu Jitsu - HQ - Adelaide See more

06.01.2022 Saturday Kids MMA classes are kicking off this week. Please send your kids, as it looks really weird if its just me and one kid.

02.01.2022 In competitive Judo the aim is to score 'Ippon' which I think roughly translates to 'the act of removing someones soul'.
