24.01.2022 The wetlands in the upper Kent River catchment are a wonderful summer refuge for ducks and other waterbirds. It seems saline wetlands contain aquatic plants and invertebrates in abundance, the water bird food source.

24.01.2022 These waterway weeds have also been found in Western Australia. They are illegal to trade.

23.01.2022 We will be there.

21.01.2022 The Western Australia Carter’s freshwater mussel have a similar lifecycle and cleansing function as the Californium mussels. However increased salinity and nutrient enrichment have reduced the population down significantly. I have memories as a child growing up on the Canning River of watching Carter’s Mussels moving slowly through the mud.

16.01.2022 The Gordon River flows into the Frankland River. This pool was at least 2 m deep for most of its 1.5km length. Despite the rains the River was not flowing and the pool would have to fill by about 0.5m before overflowing. There were swans, coots, grebes and other ducks on the pool.

14.01.2022 Residues of the 2017 flood on the lower section of the Warperup Creek. Apart from the logs 2metres up the trees, the river pool was filling with sediment.

13.01.2022 I thought I would check up on bioplastics. When the packaging on a bio-plastic product says biodegradable or compostable, what does this really mean? Essentially, it means that in an industrial composting facilitywhere they are able to break the bio-plastic down into tiny pieces and compost it with very high heatit will biodegrade or compost.... So are the products really compostable by a regular person? In a home-scale compost bin, they won’t really break down. In order to break down, they must be composted in an industrial composting facility where temperatures get very high due to the immense volume of compost. Another issue is that even when they are composted, the quality of the compost is not very good. The compostable bio-plastics break down into a very sticky, resin-y debris that creates poor compost that’s not rich and nutritious for plants like compost from truly organic materials. And furthermore. Is it true that most of the products labeled biodegradable, degradable, compostable, etc., actually can’t be recycled? That’s correct. They can’t be recycled because they’re not plastic. If you put them into recycling, it can screw up the waste stream. Even when you’re recycling plastic, the plastic has to be separated by colors. So when the recycling arrives at the sorting facility, if they find items that can’t be recycled such as the compostable utensils, rather than taking the time to sort it all out, they just send it [all] to the landfill. There’s a big potential negative impact on the recycling stream as well. Which explains why the green compostable rubbish bags are still present in my worm farm.

11.01.2022 Anyone with spare money for an eco-restoration project.

04.01.2022 Comment on the proposal to the EPA closes on 23 December. Please have a look, comment and share. The ring road has merit but needs to be done right with regards to wildlife, especially the endangered ringtail possum. Thanks Sayah for the heads up.
