I think we'd earnt it after completing the Everest / Lhotse double on the back of the 7 Summits world record. Caught up with Mike Hamill, the guy who literally wrote the guide book to climbing the seven summits. 23.01.2022 #oneyearagotoday - Day 106 of Project 7in4. A great night's sleep, lazy morning at Camp 2, leisurely descent through the Icefall to Basecamp, and afternoon of personal admin (a.k.a. weekly shower and fresh pair of underwear). At altitude, you generally don't sleep very well due to hypoxia and general uncomfortable sleeping conditions. But that night, despite being at 6400m, I slept for 12 hrs straight. Fair to say I was a little bit tired after our couple of days on Nuptse p...rior. Funny that I can sleep better at 6400m on Everest than I can at home. 22.01.2022 #oneyearagotoday - Day 118 of Project 7in4. After summiting Everest yesterday, Jon and I celebrated the only way we knew how... We went and climbed another mountain. Leaving the South Col just before dawn, we traversed back over the Geneva Spur and descended partway across the Lhotse face before turning off the Everest route and heading up Lhotse (4th highest in the world). We summited Lhotse around midday then descended all the way back to base camp that day, getting in arou...nd 10:00pm. 22.01.2022 #oneyearagotoday - Day 110 of Project 7in4. Another day in basecamp waiting. Another lap of Kala Pattar. This time as I passed through Gorek Shep I stopped and jumped on the internet. I was overwhelmed to see all the videos and messages of support people had sent me. Climbing can be a selfish and egocentric pursuit at times. While on the hill you definitely do end up in your own little bubble, focused solely on the summit and self preservation. For me it was very humbling (an...d a bit emotional) to read and watch all the messages people had sent me. It was also a bit of a reality check. 21.01.2022 With global media currently circulating an article about queues and traffic jams on Everest, and with one photo in particular showing a line of people on the final summit ridge from the Nepal side, I thought I'd share a couple of photos of that exact same location from my summit day last year. I agree, the recent congestion on Everest isn't great, but contrary to what the media portray, it's not always like that. 15.01.2022 #oneyearagotoday - Day 120 of Project 7in4. It was time to leave basecamp and start our journey home. I had been looking forward to this moment for so long, to be heading back to civilisation, to the comforts of my own house, my own bed (which I hadn't seen for almost 6 months). But now that is was here, it was quite sad. I didn't want to leave. I didn't want this journey to end. Trekking back down the valley from Everest Basecamp, Jon and I reached the nearest teahouse (Gore...k Shep) and that's as far as we made it. With a 60km trek ahead of us back to Lukla, we took the easy option and jumped on a heli. 15.01.2022 #oneyearagotoday - Day 123 of Project 7in4. Well, that was it. The final leg of the journey. I will admit, I was a bit emotional saying farewell to Jon at Kathmandu airport as I boarded my flight to Perth and he headed back to the UK. Although it wasn't so much a "farewell", but more a "till next time". Over 4 months we had travelled and climbed together continuously and I can't think of a better bloke to have done it with. Thank you Jon! The flight home was a quiet, reflecti...ve one. I was excited to get home, delighted with the success of the Project, and yet saddened that it was all over. 14.01.2022 #oneyearago - Project 7in4. After a couple of nice quiet days at home in Perth (and not telling many people I was home), I travelled back to Sydney to visit family and friends. It was so wonderful to see everyone again. The support and encouragement I received throughout the entire expedition was amazing and made a world of difference. Thank you. When away on expeditions, I know it's often hard for loved ones back home with uncertainty and worry, not knowing how things are go...ing. I know Mum and Dad in particular at times wished I wasn't doing these climbs. 14.01.2022 #oneyearagotoday - Day 116 of Project 7in4. The look I give Jon when he interrupts our afternoon picnic to say we have to do an alpine start (i.e. middle of the night start). Jon and I managed to do the entire 7 Summits with basically no alpine starts, instead preferring our sleep-ins and climbing in daylight. 04.01.2022 #oneyearagotoday - Day 105 of Project 7in4. After just a few hours rest, we set off at about 1am to attempt Nuptse. Nuptse isn't one of the 7 Summits and wasn't part of my original plan, however we had the opportunity to join Guy Cotter's @adventureconsultants team so thought why not. With Lhotse also on the radar, it meant a shot at the "Triple Crown" (Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse); in addition to the 7 Summits. The night was cold and dark, as the sun rose the winds also picke...d up making for uncomfortable conditions. Guy Cotter's impressive Sherpa team were leading the rope fixing and performed an incredible job. We climbed until about midday and were just 200m vertical below the summit but with snow conditions getting increasingly more dangerous had to make the tough decision to call it quits and descend. Nuptse is technically much harder than Everest. There is good reason why it has only seen ~20 summits in history, compared to Everest with 6000+. Despite not summiting, this was still one of the greatest days I've had in the hills. It was an absolute pleasure and privilege for me to be able to climb with Tim Mosedale, Jon Gupta, Adam Booth and Guy Cotter and his incredible Sherpa team. Not to mention the incredibly rare views we enjoyed of Everest, Lhotse over the Western Cwm. 04.01.2022 #oneyearagotoday - Day 115 of Project 7in4. Finally... this was it. Time to dress up as #teletubbies. Jon and I set set off from Camp 2 on our final summit push. With heavy packs, it took us about 4hrs to make our way up to the head of the Western Cwm and up the steep Lhotse face to Camp 3. Although we did have a nice dusting of snow overnight so the trails and valleys looked quite different with white underfoot. And some incredible views of Everest, Nuptse, Pumori and Ama Dablam.
