22.01.2022 Kingston Council's adopted Budget for 2020/2021 has allocated $600,000 to fund the replacement of the synthetic service of Pitch No.3. As many of you would recall, the venue underwent a $3.2 million redevelopment in 2010 which included pavilion upgrades, new changing rooms, as well as new synthetic pitches. This redevelopment was officially opened (by me) in late July 2010. The project was funded with over $2.9 million through the Rudd Government’s Economic Stimulus Plan an...d $363,000 from Kingston City Council. After the replacement of pitch 2 recently, the user clubs made it clear that pitch 3 was also due for replacement after 10 years of heavy use. I am pleased to say the money has been secured in this year's budget. 19.01.2022 If re-elected I will deliver a Master Plan process for the sporting facilities at Namajira Park. Through my consultations with the user groups I have a real understanding of local needs and I am committed to deliver for our community clubs. The Master Plan process will look at local needs, clubs’ aspirations, consultations with the community and come up with a plan that works. ... The following has been raised with me and will need to be addressed as part of the Master Plan process: upgrade or rebuild of the pavilion, including female-friendly, accessible changerooms, modern umpires’ facilities, and appropriate social rooms, the retention of the natural turf wicket, and the installation of turf cricket nets, the need for an all-weather, synthetic surface at the bowls club, improved footpaths and seating to the north of the reserve, to improve accessibility within the reserve improved fencing, wayfinding and animal management signage (dog on leash areas and instructing people to clean up after the dogs) council will be installing dog-poo bay dispensers at the reserve, the provision of provided security lighting to increase site safety and surveillance future installation of sportsground lighting on oval to improve access and use of sporting infrastructure through winter months. #Kingston #KingstonCouncil #CityOfKingston #BunjilWard #localgovernment #Municipal #election2020 #VEC #KingstonCouncillor #Councillor #DeputyMayor #CouncilElections #OakleighSouth #Southoakleigh #Clarinda #ClaytonSouth #SouthClayton #Westall
18.01.2022 Housing stress in Kingston is a growing problem. It is estimated within the City of Kingston that: 7.7% of households in Kingston experience mortgage stress 8% of households in Kingston experience rental stress... 41% of households experiencing stress are single households Existing social (including public) housing dwellings make up only 2% of households 6,175 dwellings needed to address overall demand for social and affordable housing. And this was before the Covid-19 crisis. Rising house prices and rents and limited investment in social and affordable housing has led to increasing share of in households in Kingston experiencing housing stress. Left unchecked, increasing levels of housing stress in the community will lead to a reduction in well-being in the community and an increase in disadvantage. Councils do have an important role to play, this is why under my leadership, Kingston Council has developed a Social and Affordable Housing Strategy to describe Council commitments to addressing this urgent issue. The strategy includes an assessment of the need for social and affordable housing in the City of Kingston and sets out a range of strategies and actions that Council will pursue to assist households in Kingston affected by the lack of affordable accommodation. Safe, secure and affordable housing provides both direct and indirect benefits to the community. As well as providing low-income and vulnerable households with secure tenure and protection from housing stress, social and affordable housing also reduces disadvantage, protects community diversity and enhances labour market efficiencies. Kingston needs people sitting around council the table who have the depth of knowledge and understanding to deliver for our community. This is why I am standing for re-election. For more information see here: https://www.kingston.vic.gov.au//Social-and-Affordable-Hou To see the plan as a PDF see the comments. #Kingston #KingstonCouncil #CityOfKingston #BunjilWard #localgovernment #Municipal #election2020 #VEC #KingstonCouncillor #Councillor #DeputyMayor #CouncilElections #OakleighSouth #Southoakleigh #Clarinda #ClaytonSouth #SouthClayton #Westall

14.01.2022 Landfill Update - September 2020 As you are aware, Council been working hard for the past 12 years toward the closure of the local landfill, tipping and waste related industries in the Kingston Green Wedge. I initiated the work undertaken to complete the Kingston Green Wedge Management Plan, and Planning Scheme Amendment C143 which provided the planning justification to phase out waste related industries in our Green Wedge. ...Continue reading
13.01.2022 If re-elected I will fight tooth and nail to deliver the Sandbelt Open Space - Chain of Parks project in the Kingston Green Wedge. Work is currently underway on the Elder Street South Reserve in Clarinda (2) and Victory Road Reserve in Clayton South (4) both of which will be opened in the next term of council. As Mayor I successfully secured a $25 million commitment from the State Government to help fund the next stages of this once in a generation project. We are now lobby...ing for Parks Victoria to acquire the Delta Site (3) and the Henry Street Site (6) Heatherton. I was also proud to open the Spring Road Reserve in Dingley Village (1) in 2018, Kingston’s largest council operated park. Council has approved the planning scheme amendment that will allow Hawthorn Football Club develop the Kennedy Community Centre in Dingley Village (5). By way of update, Council successfully negotiated the closure of Clayton Regional landfill (7). We are undertaking major remediation works at Heatherton Park (8), and the last remaining green organics recycler - Enviromix (9) was moved out of Kingston to make way for the Mordialloc Bypass. If I am re-elected I will keep fighting for residents to make sure the one remaining landfill is completed and closed and the concrete crusher facility is moved out of our area. #Kingston #KingstonCouncil #CityOfKingston #BunjilWard #localgovernment #Municipal #election2020 #VEC #KingstonCouncillor #Councillor #DeputyMayor #CouncilElections #OakleighSouth #Southoakleigh #Clarinda #ClaytonSouth #SouthClayton #Westall

05.01.2022 Kingston Council has welcomed a partnership between the Federal and State Governments that will see additional funding for the development of a new Centre for Health and Wellbeing at Moorabbin Reserve, named after legendary football player Danny Frawley. The funding commitment comes on top of the significant contributions the Council and State Government have made to the return of the St Kilda Football Club to their home at Moorabbin Reserve. The new Danny Frawley Centre for ...Health and Wellbeing was a fitting legacy for a man who did so much on and off the field to support mental health. The development of the Centre for Wellbeing comes at a crucial time when the local community has been particularly challenged by the impacts of COVID-19 pandemic, lockdown and recovery. This facility aligns well with Council’s objectives of working to support our community during this difficult period. The new Centre will be a great addition to the already fantastic facilities now available for the Club and the community to use and enjoy at Moorabbin Reserve, including the Saints’ AFLW team which has had a terrific first season. This announcement will also bring a wonderful opportunity to facilitate another construction project in Kingston, providing local jobs not only in construction but also for the many local businesses that supply to the construction sector #Kingston #KingstonCouncil #CityOfKingston #BunjilWard #localgovernment #Municipal #election2020 #VEC #KingstonCouncillor #Councillor #Mayor #DeputyMayor #moorabbin #OakleighSouth #Southoakleigh #Clarinda #ClaytonSouth #SouthClayton #Westall @stkildafc @nickstaikos @hadisaab4kingston

04.01.2022 My grandfather arrived in Australia in 1963. He and my late uncle Ari arrived ahead of the rest of the family to establish a home in Melbourne where they ended up building a new life. Efstratios Zafiriou was born in Lesvos in 1919, only 7 years after the island was liberated from Ottoman rule. My grandfather defended the northern frontier of Greece during the Second World War, where Greece as a member of the Allies was under threat and subsequently invaded by Nazis. ... After the war, he married my grandmother and had three children, the youngest of which is my mother Vikki. Like so many at the time he left a country in political turmoil, and moved to a wonderful democratic society full of opportunities for workers. When he arrived in Australia he started working straight away at General Motors, and worked there on the assembly line for 15 years straight. This is where he was given the anglicised first name of Steven as his full Greek name was a bit complicated for the Australia of the 1960s and 1970s. When I was born, my parents decided I would be named Steven as is the tradition for second sons to be named after their maternal grandfathers. After the Junta had fallen in Greece, my grandparents decided to retire on their home island. Mum of course remained here and started her own family the rest is history. Do you think I look like him? #Kingston #KingstonCouncil #CityOfKingston #BunjilWard #localgovernment #Municipal #election2020 #VEC #KingstonCouncillor #Councillor #DeputyMayor #CouncilElections #OakleighSouth #Southoakleigh #Clarinda #ClaytonSouth #SouthClayton #Westall
04.01.2022 Today is the very first National Buy Aussie Day This is a call-to-arms for shoppers to support the 2.2 million Aussie small businesses who are the engine room of our economy. These businesses have recently been dealt a string of economic disasters in 2020 following droughts, bushfires, floods and now the financial impacts caused by COVID-19.... Now that Australia officially has gone into recession for the first time in thirty years and retail turnover growth is expected to fall -1.4% in 2020 which will be the worst year on record in Australia. Research continually shows that Australians prefer to buy Australian and for too long we have been relying on foreign nations when what we produce at home is among the best in the world. Some of the best ways to find out what is Australian made are following @buyaussienow on Instagram or of course the well-established Australian made green and gold logo. When small businesses thrive, so does the Australian economy. We need you to join our community and come shop the Aussie aisle. Be Australian, Buy Australian. https://www.buyaussieday.com.au
