23.01.2022 Testing the Fuel Pressure Regulator with a first look sensor. The first image shows all injectors working and the dampening as the diaphragm relaxes. The second image is with number 1 injector disconnected. The secondary voltage is taken of the number 1 HT lead, note the time difference for number 1 injector after the secondary fire. Also note a complete pulse is missing between the number 1 cylinder firing with the injector off.

21.01.2022 Using the First Look Sensor on the intake manifold of a V6 (a very worn motor), as can be seen here only two cylinders out of the six are able to draw in enough atmosphere to even register a reasonable signal. There are no obvious valve problems in the signal, but the worn rings, timing gear etc: has contributed to the lack of vacuum required to give this engine the suction required.

20.01.2022 Using the First Look Sensor on the intake manifold is a great way to determine valve condition. Because it is measuring positive and negative pressures going past the sensor, ignition misfires don’t show up as they are after the event. Image 1-Uniform pulses of a 4 cylinder engine showing some lag on valve seats but very minor, note all vehicles will have a unique signature pulse for the type of induction and head design. Image 2 is shown closer with number 1 secondary firing.

18.01.2022 An example of an AFM signal showing very poor throttle response on the second peak. At first it would appear the sensor is dirty or faulty; however in this case the engine has over 400k on it and can barely draw in enough atmospheres to bring up the revs, this creates a bad lag and gives it limited response.

18.01.2022 The test is taken with the First Look Sensor in the tailpipe of a 4 cylinder engine. Note all the pulses are even and well duplicated showing the combustion process and exhaust valves to be in good working order. If an ignition synchronization signal was used (EG: Red cursor (A) ) The delay from engine to tailpipe makes the 2 pulse from (A) the actual no 1 cylinder. The time taken between no 1cylinder events is 135.2 mS. 60,000/135.2=443.8x2=887.5RPM approx.

16.01.2022 A Toyota IGF (feedback signal)and IGT (trigger signal) signal taken at the ECU, another good reference waveform to keep.

15.01.2022 An example of a V6 Prado-Cam and Crank Signal. Once you start collecting these types of reference waveforms, it can make a very useful library for troubleshooting. Also very helpful when confirming Sync and Timing Faults as well as signal condition. These tests were taken at the ECU confirming the signal, connections and wiring integrity.

13.01.2022 An example of using cheaper scanners. On a Recent vehicle (BA Falcon) no codes were listed with 2 scanners but The G Scan came up with 12 codes!

09.01.2022 Could explain the poor idle?

07.01.2022 If you have a warm stable engine and the TPS and throttle body are set correctly, there is little work for the idle control to do as the air needed to maintain the desired RPM is feed through a bleed passage. Once a load is applied or the ECM detects the desired RPM cannot be maintained, it sends signals to the IAC to allow more air to enter raising the RPM to the desired level. Once the loads and desired RPM have been established the ECM allows the Throttle body to return to... normal idle position. For this reason it is important that the base idle set screw has not been adjusted incorrectly, is not bent and clean. The engine must be in good condition, no other air leaks and exhaust and intakes should flow well. Resistances of coils should be checked and testing of the two wires to any coil should produce a pattern similar to the image below, both signals operate in this case with battery voltage but are inverted in reference to ground. The signal pulse is sent and the frequency (PWM) adjusted to suit the needs and speed that the IAC must move to correct the idle. The second coil is checked in the same way. See more
