25.01.2022 Blue skies and smiles @eskimomoxo @carolinekim_naturopathy & HUGO Grateful for a day off and moving around outside, getting some Vitamin D, breathing fresh air, sitting by the beach & chilling with friends It's the small things ... Looking forward to seeing everyone this week!

25.01.2022 Truth bomb pain + struggle are part of the human experience. Your health will be influenced by either accepting, leaning into the discomfort + seeking what the universe is teaching you (with gratitude), or by resisting, blaming + feeling like a victim. The choice is yours.

21.01.2022 Where are my zeppelin fans at? "Inspired" (*stolen*) from folk guitarist Jake Holmes, Jimmy Page newly arranged this classic for Led Zeppelin I, laying down one of the greatest electric guitar riffs of all time I can forgive Jimmy for reworking this song so brilliantly

20.01.2022 Magnolia officinalis (Hou Po in Chinese medicine) - such a brilliant + diverse herbal medicine Used to treat chronic stress, menstrual cramps, abdominal bloating and gas, indigestion, anxiety & depression, protective effects on liver and brain Researchers have determined Honokiol & magnolol two constituents in the herb are 1000x times more potent in antioxidant activity than vitamin E... Enhances overall expression of GABA adenosine, dopamine and serotonin receptors - positive effects in mood and sleep Lowers cortisol levels - great herb for weight loss, blood sugar balance, fatigue, reduced cognition and adrenal exhaustion A study observed honokiol to be 5x more effective in reducing anxiety than with diazepam (Valium), and without the side effects of diazepam Potential benefit in Alzheimer’s disease, characterised by insufficient acetylcholine levels and build of amyloid plaque in the brain. Honokiol and magnolol increase choline acetyltransferase activity, inhibit acetylcholinesterase, and promote potassium-induced acetylcholine release Anti-inflammatory effects observed to alleviate allergic inflammatory response in asthma patients Anti-cancer properties - is currently being used in trials for usage as adjunct treatment for cancer therapy

18.01.2022 Reminder for the day by @tarabrach one of my favourite meditation teachers, her guided meditations are available free to listen on (also free) meditation app @insighttimer and her website

18.01.2022 Now is not a time to be distracted by constant scrolling social media, tuning into mainstream media and the illusion of material-obsessed consumer culture Further distractions include binge-watching TV, excessive alcohol & drug use, dysfunctional relationships, gossip Now is a time to be clear, alert & awake... A messy+ unstable mind = a messy + unstable life Make a commitment to silence, reflection, self-care, communicating with integrity & doing the inner-work Big changes are coming

16.01.2022 I regularly point out to clients who come to see me with minor or major mood disturbances, poor sleep, fatigue, hormonal imbalances, low libido & erectile dysfunction that one of the major causes of their symptoms is likely due to medication side-effects Informed consent is rarely applied by GPs when prescribing seemingly 'harmless' medications to patients - were you provided with reliable information about the potential side effects, the risks and benefits of other options..., and given the time & respect of asking questions? Statins, oral contraceptive pill, psychiatric meds, reflux meds, blood pressure meds, antibiotics & hormal replacement therapy are what I see causing alot of clients' symptoms that they are distressed about The initial treatment plan regularly involves a trip back to your GP to discuss your medication options... https://www.bbc.com//20200108-the-medications-that-change-

15.01.2022 Get the foundations right and issues such as fatigue, anxiety, hormonal imbalance, insomnia, chronic pain + inflammation & indigestion will automatically begin to balance out For the many diseases, illnesses & complaints that clients present to me with, there is rarely something unique to look at without addressing these factors (at least initially) Essentially, healing the nervous system & the gut (which are intrinsically connected via the enteric nervous system) directs ...the body to its natural homeostasis, sending a signal of safety to our biology so that it can work *for* us and heal itself - our bodies are always trying to restore balance, but we have to provide the environment for it to do that Don't overlook the basics, they can enable profound shifts in your physical & mental well-being

15.01.2022 Or as @kellybroganmd has put it, "activism not foregrounded by self-care is a distraction"

15.01.2022 A favourite, haunting yet beautiful radiohead song from #inrainbows

13.01.2022 Fire in the gut fire in the brain, i.e. if you have inflammation, parasites, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), fungal overgrowth, stealth infections (e.g. Lymes disease) or dysbiosis in the gut, then that is going to produce an inflammatory response that affects the nervous system and can drive anxiety symptoms This is another example similar to not addressing heavy metals you can take supplements for symptom relief, but if you don’t address what’s causing ...it, they will continue to surface The fact that there is 400x more serotonin produced in the gut than in the brain and that researchers now talk about our gut being the ‘second brain,’ is just scratching the surface of why it’s important to address our gut microbiome Even if you don’t have ‘typical’ symptoms such as cramping, bloating, alternating bowels and indigestion, there may be some level of gut flora imbalance contributing to psychological symptoms The gut is an organ that is a branch of our nervous system think of it as a large bag of giant muscle, a big bundle of nerves that responds to our nervous system activity. The gut, our nervous system and the stress response are intricately linked, and we now know that anxiety and the stress response disrupts our gut microflora and gut-wall integrity I unfortunately meet many clients who have never experienced anxiety until they have had a course of strong antibiotics, due to their effect on our gut microbiome. Antibiotics can be the underlying cause of a lifetime of physical and psychological problems If this sounds like you, focusing on restoring your gut microbiome would be a key treatment strategy #naturopath #nutritionist #surryhills #sydney #pcos #cysters #endometriosis #anxiety #depression #mentalhealth #guthealth #microbiome #functionalmedicine #herbalist #hashimotos #autoimmunity #IBS #SIBO #functionalmedicine

13.01.2022 Many clients I meet @natural.allergy.treatment and at @wholisticmedicalcentre suddenly develop allergies and/or food intolerances out of the blue, and are always perplexed as to why This graphic sums it up nicely - if you go back to some of my previous posts and look at the variety of factors that contribute to leaky gut and gut dysbiosis, an accumulation of these factors eventually becomes too much of a burden for the gut which sets up the stage for allergies and intolerances Must treat the gut, and head over to @natural.allergy.treatment to help get over your allergies and intolerances once and for all

11.01.2022 PODCAST - Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) [link below- scroll down to episode 04] https://stevenjudge.com.au/podcasts/ Every week I continue to meet with clients who have had either a very recent onset or a *lifetime* of chronic digestive issues, who may have a few or a variety of the following... Feel bloated & uncomfortable immediately after all meals, and can even be bloated after water or upon waking Constant uncomfortable flatulence & abdominal pain/cramping Chronic constipation OR diarrhoea (tends to swing one way or the other) Everything seems to trigger them Severe reflux & constant belching Some have trouble with excess weight loss and struggle to put on weight due to chronic malabsorption Significant fatigue & brain fog due chronic malabsorption, and classically alway very iron deficient When I meet these clients, I immediately prioritise testing for and ruling out/treating SIBO. They've typically tried a huge variety supplements/probiotics/therapies/medications/dietary changes etc. with zero relief, and are at their wits end The small intestine is such an important part of the gastro-intestinal tract because it's where we absorb all of our nutrients! If there is an overgrowth of bacteria there, alongside having low stomach acid, & poor digestive enzyme function, this means food that reaches the small intestine ferments, causing distressing symptoms & malabsorption The downstream effect of this ranges from chronic fatigue to mood imbalances, hormonal imbalances & pain + inflammation Conditions associated with SIBO include Diverticulitis Endometriosis Acne Rheumatoid Arthritis Rosacea Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Irritable Bowel Syndrome Obesity Liver Disease Restless Leg Syndrome Inflammatory Bowel Disease Pancreatic Disease Hypothyroidism Diabetes You *must* start with the gut, always. Otherwise copious amounts of supplements/medications/herbs just became a band-aid Hear more about SIBO in my podcast with @naturalallergytreatment (link below - scroll down to episode 04) https://stevenjudge.com.au/podcasts/

08.01.2022 Anxiety, Depression & Mood swings very often manifest in people 'out of nowhere' shortly following taking antibiotics This is not just hypothetical. It is documented in the Journal of clinical psychiatry that treatment with a single course of antibiotics is associated with a significantly increase risk of anxiety & depression There are numerous neurologic, metabolic & immune pathways that are affected in our bodies by changes in the gut microbiome... "Dysbiosis" (microbial imbalance) as a result of a single course of antibiotics can dramatically affect mental health - the most common timeline i hear from clients is 'ever since I travelled overseas and had gastro'... or 'I've never experienced significant anxiety, but ever since I took a course of antibiotics for ________, I am constantly anxious, on edge & flat/exhausted.....' It's alot more common than people realise If this sounds like you, sorting out gut dysbiosis & inflammation is a key piece of the puzzle to overcoming these symptoms Not all probiotics/prebiotics are equal - specific strains & prebiotics target specific gut bugs that influence neurotransmitter production, produce anti-inflammatory compounds and help to crowd out endotoxin producing ('not so good') gut bugs I'll be doing a live video to discuss this in more detail very soon including key strategies to heal the gut post-antibiotics, stay tuned #naturopath #nutritionist #surryhills #sydney #pcos #cysters #endometriosis #anxiety #depression #mentalhealth #guthealth #microbiome #functionalmedicine #herbalist #hashimotos #autoimmunity #IBS #SIBO #functionalmedicine #pottspoint #darlinghurst #alexandria #nutritionalmedicine #herbalmedicine #mindbodyspirit #vibrationalmedicine See more

08.01.2022 Who has @blubloxofficial blue light blockers for night-time screen time? (Or - swipe left - do you prefer my older $15 pair? ) Artificial blue-light wavelengths are seriously disrupting to our circadian rhythm and sleep quality. These glasses are perfect for wearing late afternoon and into the night. I can literally feel my eyes starting to shut while I'm at the computer and working late - this is my body getting it's natural signal to start winding down, which is compromise...d if we're continuing to stare into a phone/tv/computer all night I recommend all my clients invest in these beauties if they're struggling with sleep quality

07.01.2022 Comparisonitis is the root of so much suffering - of others' appearance, relationship status, sexuality, economic status, material possessions, occupation, level of education, "life timeline" (look at ______, they have a mortgage and kids, and I dont")... ) It generates an ego-based feeling of lack - focusing on what you don't have & a desire for more, or a desire to be different, and feeling unworthy Remember...... social media is not a reflection of reality everyone is struggling some way or another we are all unique in a variety of ways, and it's best to celebrate this rather than compare, condemn & criticise others for being different wherever you're at is exactly where you're meant to be in this present moment - acknowledging this especially when times are tough anchor you in the present comparisonitis is a distraction & excuse to not take action on your own priorities imperfect action is necessary to move forward, take the leap & start small an internal disciple of some sort is absolutely essential - morning mindset, meditation, yoga, mindfulness, prayer, whatever works for you. We know all of these things, but we need to remind ourselevs regularly & wire it into our being gratitude is the key to presence, abundance & awareness

07.01.2022 Is fish really a health food? I avoid being too much of an alarmist about what foods to eat/not eat, but I get asked quite regularly whether or not I think people should eat fish, and the best place to be sourcing it from Despite understanding it to traditionally be considered a health food, to be completely honest, I generally avoid seafood ... Yes - it is full of anti-inflammatory EPA/DHA Omega-3 which is vital for the nervous system & brain health & reducing systemic inflammation, but the ocean is becoming increasingly more toxic I do not trust anything coming out of the ocean anymore, and am alarmed at how much worse it is going to get (e.g. based on situations like the article I have posted) Farmed fish is just as bad, if not worse Omega-3 is available in plant foods, but first must be converted from Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA) to EPA/DHA, and it doesn't have a great conversion rate For this reason, I recommend (and do this myself), focusing on regular intake of ALA plant-based foods: - - Freshly ground flaxseeds/linseeds - Flaxseed/Linseed oil - Walnuts (refrigerated) - Leafy greens - Hemp seeds - Hemp Oil - Freshly ground chia seeds + Taking either a **PRACTITIONER ONLY BRAND** of purified fish-oil that has been third-party tested for contaminants and purity, and/or a plant/algal based Omega supplement (I love Sea Buckthorn Oil - hit me up for good brands) Grass-fed meat will also contain the adequate ratios of omega 3:omega 6 that are found in nature + Ensuring a steady supply of nutrients from supplements that are needed to convert ALA to EPA/DHA effectively These include Zinc, P5P (b6), Magnesium, Iron, Calcium (many of which are clasically lacking in plant-base diets done wrong) Eat adequate plants, cover your bases with plant/algal/purified fish oil supplements, and ensure you have the right co-factors To determine your potential need for supplements, work with someone to review your diet, order hair tissue mineral analysis & any other relevant blood tests to help determine if supplements may be necessary

06.01.2022 A herbalist's secret weapon! Adatpogenic herbal medicines are plants that help the body better adapt to stress by fine-tuning the stress response Adaptogens are "hormetic" - meaning that their stress-protective effects are the result of the adaptation of the organism to the mild stressful effects of the adaptogen itself ... Adaptogens induce stress-protective effects similar to the effects of repeated physical exercise - prolonged states of resistance to stress, & increased endurance + stamina We can't always change our environment, our stressful job or other stressful situations (at least not overnight), and we are continuing to learn more about how constant over-activation of the stress-response and excess cortisol is a significant physiological contributor to depression, digestive disorders, insomnia, headaches, weight gain & cognitive impairment (memory, focus, concentration) This is why herbal adaptogens are such incredible medicines for anyone with a health condition related to chronic stress, or for anyone feeling run down and wanting to improve their energy levels & vitality Some of my favourites include Rhodiola rosea Withania somnifera (Ashwaghanda) Eleutherococcus senticosus (Siberian Ginseng) Panax ginseng Ocimum tenuiflorum (Holy Basil) Astragalus membranaceous Medicinal mushrooms (reishi, cordyceps, Turkey tail) See more

05.01.2022 Melissa officinalis (Lemon Balm) An herbaceous perennial in the Lamiaceae family (mint, sweet marjoram, sage) native to Southern Europe, Melissa is an incredibly versatile herbal medicine Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) - infamous for causing painful, burning & itchiness on the lips, oral mucous membranes & genital region...Melissa applied *topically* has been observed in clinical trials (human) to signifcantly reduce symptoms & accelerate healing... In vitro & in vivo studies have observed Melissa to possess strong anti-viral activity against HSV even at very low concentrations, and may be useful as an anti-viral when taken internally as a herbal medicine Interestingly, studies have reported aqueous extracts of lemon balm to exhibit anti-viral effects against influenza & HIV-1 Insomnia, Stress & Anxiety - Melissa has been shown to reduce restlessness and insomnia in children, reduce heart palpitation intensity & frequency, severe depression & anxiety & social anxiety Melissa contains a range of phytochemical that positively influence the nervous system by via its influence of GABA & cholinergic receptors Anti-Spasmodic, Anti-Inflammatory & Antioxidant (IBS & Indigestion) - Melissa reduces visceral hypersensitivity (higher sensitivity to gut pains), pain thresholds & diarrhoea It also reduces inflammatory markers whilst enhancing mucosal antioxidant capability to reduce oxidative stress Anti-Thyroid - a pre-clinical study reported that constituents of Melissa may block binding of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) Using this herbal medicine with thyroid conditions must be used cautiously, especially if you have hypothyroidism/Hashimotos (autoimmune thyroid) If you're super stressed, anxious, not sleeping, depressed, suffering indigestion, need support for HSV - Melissa officinalis is your friend! However if you have a thyroid condition err on the side of caution and as always work alongside your practitioner Lucky me - this bunch is growing in my garden, looking forward to smashing Lemon Balm tea! #naturopath #nutritionist #herbalist #herbalmedicine #plantmedicine #integrativemedicine #functionalmedicine

05.01.2022 https://stevenjudge.com.au/blastocystis-sydney-naturopath/ I'm continuing to work many clients who have uncovered Blastocystis hominis via stool testing with their GP/other practitioner, have tried treating it with multiple rounds of conventional + triple-therapy antibiotics (very strong), and/or herbal antibiotics, and are not getting any better or very commonly are worse (especially after triple-therapy) At this point, they come to see me... Here are a few unpopular truths regarding Blastocystis: We don't know the role of Blastocystis, whether or not it is actually a parasite. Millions of people worldwide live with Blastocystis symptom-free, in good health There's no known eradication strategy, including with herbal medicine In the rare occasion people have 'killed' Blastocystis with antibiotics, majority of them are alot worse off in health than they were beforehand, due to the effect of antibiotics on the gut microbiome This is another point where clients come to see me I am yet to work with a client who, after further investigation, doesn't have other factors driving their chronic gut symptoms (and related - brain fog, dizziness, anxiety, mood swings, fatigue). These are most commonly: Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) GIT Dysbiosis (Microbial Imbalance) Post-Infective Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Helicobacter pylori Infection Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD) I help save people alot of time and money by getting straight into microbiome testing and/or SIBO breath testing to uncover how the digestive system is functioning, any bacterial overgrowths & what beneficial species are deficient By restoring the gut microbiome according to the individual, and addressing any other factors that have been missed (usually SIBO!), we finally get healing More info in my blog https://stevenjudge.com.au/blastocystis-sydney-naturopath/

03.01.2022 Best approach to "anti-ageing"? Taking care of your gut microbiome A newly published study in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease (Moira et al. 2020) has reported a novel association between certain intestinal bacteria + lipopolysaccharide endotoxins (driven by leaky gut), with the systemic inflammation & brain amyloid plaque build-up observed in Alzheimer's Disease ... The authors strongly suggest these associations are candidates for our understanding the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's Disease progression Considering that... Alzheimer's is now a leading cause of death in Australia Alzheimer's starts at least 20 years before the onset of symptoms You can't heal the brain without healing the gut PPIs (reflux medications) *double* your risk of developing Alzheimer's Digestive & Gut Microbiome health, alongside quality sleep + connectivity + exercise should really be that the forefront of healthcare Why aren't these discoveries mainstream and widespread knowledge?... (rhetorical question )

02.01.2022 One of the ways we misuse our power and drain ourselves, energetically speaking, is our need for approval and validation from other people The goal, or the practise, is getting to a point where you approve of yourself, and trust yourself.if you need someone's approval, you will never put your own intuitive guidance before someone else’s approval Compromising yourself to be liked & approved of by another person is a quick and easy way to lose your power... Looking for approval is something in our history because we don't approve of **ourselves***.... It is a stage of working through and developing true self esteem If I needed approval from others in regards to my work which cops alot of kickback from conventional medicine, my sexual orientation which is condemned by a large percentage of the population, my views around health & healing even within my own profession, my experiences and personal views on the 'invisible world,' god & a higher power... I would be an exhausted victim of life who blames the external world for my experience of reality, hiding my true-self to be approved of by others This would also ring true if I constantly needed validation around my wounded history and used it to socially manipulate others, or needed to constantly post the illusion on social media about how perfect & glamorous my life is (hello Instagram!) The need for approval is seriously damaging to our health Approval of yourself, while simply accepting that many others out there will oppose your views, experiences & perspectives, is key to maintaining your power, and therefore your health Do not compromise your-self

01.01.2022 TELE-HEALTH Is awesome There has been an exponential increase in consulting via tele-health since CV, due to more awareness around the ability to consult with any sort of practitoner from anywhere in the world ... I love meeting people in person , however the telehealth platform is super convenient for anyone wanting to consult from afar, or who are simply extremely busy and can't travel Today I worked with clients here @wholisticmedicalcentre and also via tele-health in Melbourne, Brisbane, Tasmania & USA Love that we can deliver this style of health-care from a distance, and seamlessly organise further testing, treatment plans and prescriptions The future of health care is here
