02.01.2022 Just so you know, I’m going to be your Prime Minister. But before that, let me introduce myself. I’m Mohammad and I’m 16. For nearly half my life I have called... Australia home, without knowing if I will be allowed to stay. Nine years ago, my family and I were forced to flee our country. We left everything behind in the middle of the night. When I started school in Australia I had a really hard time. I couldn’t read or write in English. Fortunately, my fifth grade teacher took it upon himself to teach me English. Studying and ‘being the smart kid’ became my identity, my way to be optimistic about my future. I am in grade eleven now and law is my favourite subject. My goal in life is to become the Prime Minister of Australia. The first thing that I will do as Prime Minister will be to recognise and celebrate Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander people meaningfully in the constitution. But wait, before that, I need to celebrate my family’s resilience. Just some days ago my mum called me in the middle of class. She was hysterical. Choking on tears she told me, ‘we got the visas’. I am so happy. This permanent protection visa means everything. Soon, I am going to have my name on an Australian passport. I feel like I am part of something, that I have an identity and that I am allowed to stay and feel like I belong. This is the welcoming Australia I want for everyone. Sign the pledge with me! - Mohammad

02.01.2022 Today the Court has ruled on my defamation case against former Senator David Leyonhjelm. It is with relief and pleasure that I can inform you that we were succe...ssful. Taking legal action was a hard decision to make, and one that could not have happened without the immense support from regular everyday Australians, like you, who want better treatment and respect for women in our workplaces, our homes and our community. Calling out bad behaviour and holding those who harass and belittle women to account is essential for society if we are to achieve true equality. The money raised from this case will go to two important organisations that fight for women and girls every day: @Plan International Australia and the Working Women's Centre SA Inc; two organisations that work at the coalface of inequality and discrimination.
